Modules 4~6Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018威海高三模拟) The ancient city of Chichen Itza in southern Mexico was one of the most powerful cities and one of the most powerful ancient cultures—the Maya. But today,no one lives there. It is only a group of old buildings. However, people from around the world still come to see it.People come to learn about its ancient culture, the culture of the Mayan people. The Mayan culture began almost 3,000 years ago and grew in parts of Central America. But about 1,000 years ago a group called the Itza invaded the city and built new parts of the city based on natural wells. They named the city Chichen Itza, which means “mouth of the well of the Itza”.The most interesting structure in Chichen Itza is the Pyramid of Kukulcan(库库尔坎金字塔),whose four sides all come together at one point at the top. Each side on the Pyramid of Kukulcan has 91 steps. And there is one more step at the top of the pyramid. The steps are as many as the days of a year. Some experts believe the Maya could have used this building to help them know when to plant crops. Each day the sun falls on a different step of the pyramid, which could be a way to follow the year. The people of Chichen Itza especially designed one building to observe and study the movement of the stars and planets.Experts say that the observatory (天文台) is one of the most complex structures the Maya built.A set of steps went up and around the observatory tower. And there were windows in the tower. Each window had a purpose.Experts believe that a person looking through one of these windows could see particular stars on particular dates. The Maya might have believed that studying the stars could tell them the future.Chichen Itza is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important part of the world’s history.1.Visitors came to the city of Chichen Itza to .A.view its beautiful sceneryB.experience and explore the Mayan cultureC.study and observe other stars on the observatoryD.learn something about when to plant crops2.Why did the invaders name the city “mouth of the well of the Itza”?A.Because wells can be seen in or around the city.B.Because it is large in size.C.Because the city is newly built.D.Because its location is vital.3.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Chichen Itza is one of the World Heritages.B.The Pyramid of Kukulcan has 364 steps.C.Windows in the tower predict the weather in the future.D.The city of Chichen Itza has a long history of 3,000 years.4.What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?A.To evaluate the Mayan culture.B.To persuade readers to pay a visit.C.To introduce the structure of Chichen Itza.D.To present the development of the Mayan construction.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have wo rked there onand off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide. 学.科网31. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more mela tonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.35. D.Dessel.BMy elder brother Steve gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult after our father died when I was six.For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, Steve took time to ask me what had happened. When I explained that my baseballhad broken Mrs. Holt's basement window, Steve encouraged me to confess to it. After all, I should have been playing in the park and not in the path between buildings. Although my knees knocked as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window if she would return my ball. I also learned from Steve that personal property (财产) is a sacred thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else. I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids, and she praised me.Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve, I killed an old brown sparrow in the yard with a BB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed to Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you f irst, Mark?” I didn't know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is whether it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long time.” I really felt terrible then, but that moment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.4.What does the underlined word “confess” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Cover. B.Cause and effect.C.Examples. D.Logical reasoning.CWouldn't it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language? In a recent article from The Wall Street Journal, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within a decade or so, we'll be able to communicate with one another via small earpieces with built-in microphones. That's because technological progress is extremely rapid. It's only a matter of time. Indeed, some parents are so convinced that this technology is imminent that they're wondering if their kids should even learn a second language. It's true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating “No es bueno dormir mucho” as “It's not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent (对应词) in the target language is actually the “easy part” of a translator's job. But even this seems to be a discouraging task for computers. It's so difficult for computers because translation doesn't —or shouldn't —involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs.Rather, it's about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time.Think about all the related clues that go into understanding an expression: volume, gesture, situation, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use. Therefore, we should be very skeptical of a machine that is unable to interpret the world around us. If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better? Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.8.What does the underlined word “imminent” i n Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Ready. B.Approaching.C.Helpful. D.Advanced.9.Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent?A.Their data is not adequate enough.B.The real meaning of words can vary.C.Their accuracy needs big improvement.D.A soul hasn't been breathed in them.10.What view does the author hold about translation?A.Proper translation can be tough for humans.B.Slight distinctions matter little in translation.C.Some machines will interpret our world properly.D.Cultures deserve more attention than words used.11.What is the best title for the text?A.An Expert's Precise PredictionB.The Complexity of TranslationC.Who Will Be a Better TranslatorD.Will Language Barrier Actually FallDYou'll probably never go to Mars or sing on the stage with the Rolling Stones. But if virtual reality (VR) ever lives up to its promise, you might be able to do all these things — and many more — without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means simulating (模仿) bits of our world. Apart from games and entertainment, it's long been used for training airline pilots and surgeons and for helping scientists to figure out complex problems such as the structure of protein molecules. Then how does it work?Close your eyes and think of virtual reality and you probably picture something like this: a man wearing a wrap-around headset and data gloves wired into a powerful workstation or supercomputer. What distinguishes VR from an ordinary computer experience is the nature of the input and output. Where an ordinary computer uses things like a keyboard, mouse, or speech recognition for input, VR uses sensors that detect how your body is moving. And where a PC displays output on a screen, VR uses two screens (one for each eye), surround-sound speakers, and maybe some forms of touch and body feedback as well.VR has been routinely used by scientists, doctors, dentists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, and the military for about the last 30 years. Difficult and dangerous jobs are hard to train for. How can you safely practice taking a trip to space, making a parachute jump, or carrying out brain surgery? All these things are obvious candidates for virtual realityapplications.Like any technology, virtual reality has both good and bad points. Critics always raise the risk that people may be addicted to alternative realities to the point of ignoring their real-world lives — but that criticism has been leveled at everything from radio and TV to computer games and the Internet. Like many technologies, VR takes little or nothing away from the real world: you don't have to use it if you don't want to.12.What equipment do we need for virtual reality?A.A keyboard, a headset and a supercomputer.B.A headset, data gloves and a supercomputer.C.A headset, data gloves and a speech recognition.D.A keyboard, a mouse and a speech recognition.13.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The advantages of virtual reality.B.The influences of virtual reality.C.The importance of virtual reality.D.The applications of virtual reality.14.What is the writer's attitude towards VR?A.Cautious. B.Appreciative.C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested.15.According to the passage, virtual reality means ________.A.experiencing things that don't really existB.creating something that doesn't existC.imagining beautiful things in our mindD.cloning something that has died out第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I have worke d there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships withthem. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wa nted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. 学.科网31. The FrenchRepublic.BA warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. In today's newspaper, an accident was reported.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________答案:范文赏读In_today's_newspaper,_an_accident_was_reported. Someone was badly hurt by a bottle thrown out of a window of a building. Actually, if we look around, we will find that things of this kind are not uncommon.Cigarette ends, cans, plastic bags and bottles can be seen here and there.Needless to say, such behavior will ruin our environment and become a bad habit if we do nothing. In my opinion, every one of us should first of all make sure that we don't throw rubbish around ourselves. What is more, we should persuade others not to do so.And finally, rules should be made to stop such behavior.Only in this way can we create a better environment and live more happily.大题巧练40Module 4Music Born in America[授课提示:对应学生用书第359页]一、阅读理解A(2017·江西模拟)Here is a letter from the Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant on The Players' Tribune website on November 30th.“...This season is all I have left to give. 外研版英语选修7课后作业:Module 4 Reading and Vocabulary

Ⅰ.阅读理解Robert Todd Duncan was born in 1903 in the southern city of Danville, Kentucky. His mother was his first music teacher. As a young man, he continued his music study in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1930, he completed more musical education at Columbia University in New York City. Then he moved to Washington. For fifteen years, he taught music at Howard University in Washington. At that time, not many black musicians were known for writing or performing classical music. Teaching at Howard gave Duncan the chance to share his knowledge of classical European music with a mainly black student population. He taught special ways to present the music. These special ways became known as the Duncan Technique.Besides teaching, Duncan sang in several operas with performers who were all black. But it seemed that he always would be known mainly as a concert artist. However, his life took a different turn in the middle 1930s. At that time, the famous American music writer George Gershwin was looking for someone to play a leading part in his new work Porgy and Bess. The music critic (评论家) of the New York Times newspaper suggested Todd Duncan. Duncan had almost decided not to try for the part as he knew it would not be easy to get it. But he changed his mind. He sang a piece from an Italian opera for Gershwin. He had sung only a few minutes when Gershwin offered him the part. He became famous because of the part in Porgy and Bess.Todd Duncan gained fame as an opera singer and concert artist. But his greatest love in music was teaching. When he stopped teaching at Howard, he continued giving singing lessons in his Washington home until the week before his death.文章大意:本文主要介绍了罗伯特·托德·邓肯的音乐历程。

(建议用时:30分钟)Ⅰ阅读理解A(2019·济南高考模拟)It’s OK to say you’ve never heard ofgrime—unless you’re from the U.K. That’s because this music wasinvented in the U.K. in the early 2000s.To someone who’s not familiar with underground music culture,it’s easy to get confused between hiphop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t bother to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and J Hus led this year’s MOBO Awards—“Music of Black Origin”—nominations(提名) in the U.K.Just like U.K. electronic music and hiphop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly reflects the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs.Lady Leshurr, known as the “Queen of Grime”,said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn’t want people to judge her. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the most basic and important quality of grime music: be yourself. Also different from the hiphop culture, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social phenomena like the European refugee problem and the gap between the rich and poor.Although still quite young, grime seems to be getting favored by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead. However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted by the mainstream music world or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了英国的地下音乐形式grime,这种音乐与嘻哈音乐有着些许不同:相比嘻哈音乐,grime音乐歌手更关注社会问题。

1.What do hiphop and grime music have in common?A.They are originated in the U.K.B.They make a lot of loud noise.C.They challenge traditional culture.D.They are full of creative ideas.B解析:细节理解题。

根据第二段中的“it’s easy to get confused between hip-hop and grimesince they are both noisy”可知,人们很容易把hip-hop和grime音乐弄混,因为它们都很吵,故hip-hop和grime音乐的共同之处在于它们的声音都很大,故选B项。

2.What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Electronic music.B.Hip-hop.C.Grime music. D.Black music.C解析:代词指代题。

根据第三段中的“Just like U.K. electronic music and hip-hop”可知,画线词it所指代的音乐与英国electronic music和hip-hop相似,因此it就不能指代这两种音乐,故排除A、B选项;根据“But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs.”可知,与hip-hop不同的是,grime歌手用带有浓重口音的方言演唱,赋予了他们的歌曲一种特殊的韵味,因此画线词it指的就是grime 音乐,故选C项。

3.What can be learned about grime singers?A.They care too much about themselves.B.They refuse to be judged by others.C.They tend to take social responsibility.D.They show strong independence qualities.C解析:推理判断题。

根据第五段中的“grime singers pay more attention to social phenomena like the European refugee problem and the gap between the rich and poor”可知,grime 歌手更多地关注社会现象,比如欧洲的难民问题、贫富差距。

因此grime歌手承担了社会责任,故选C项。

4.What does Skepta’s success suggest?A.Grime is gradually getting recognized.B.Singers should try to be themselves.C.Grime has become mainstream music.D.It is easy to win the Mercury Prize.A解析:推理判断题。

根据最后一段中的“Although still quite young, grime seems to be getting favored by more and more people.”可知,尽管grime音乐诞生时间不长,但它正在受到越来越多的人的认可与支持,grime歌手Skepta的成功证明了这一点,故选A项。

B(2019·洛阳第一次统考)It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rain forest.Without it we would not have grown into primates(灵长类动物).Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat.Without competition, Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb. The friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prizes.Perhaps the ecological definition—the simultaneous(同时的) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrients, living space, or light—better explains it.As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing(分类) take place. In high school, friendship coexists with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstances, competition is too much of a burden for friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective.Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student’s fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve similar recognition.Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life.It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork.Healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy(妒忌)can tear friendship apart.Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了友谊和竞争之间的关系,健康的竞争能够增进友谊,而恶性的竞争则会破坏友谊。
