Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. In modern society loneliness can be seen as a social phenomenon and people can experience loneliness for many reasons. It is a very common, though normally temporary, 51 of a breakup, divorce, or loss of any important long-term relationship. In these cases, loneliness may result both from the loss of a specific person and from the withdrawal from social circles. The loss of a significant person in one's life will typically initiate a(n) 52 response; in this situation, one might feel lonely, even while in the company of others.Loneliness may also result from any socially disruptive(破裂的) event, such as moving from one's home town into 53 communities leading to homesickness. Loneliness can also occur in places with low population densities in which there are comparatively few people to 54 .There are many different ways used to 55 loneliness. The first step that most doctors recommend to patients is therapy. Short term therapy typically occurs over a period of ten to twenty weeks. During therapy, emphasis is put on understanding the cause of the problem, 56 the negative thoughts, feelings, and attitudes resulting from the problem, and exploring ways to help the patient feel connected. Some doctors also recommend 57 therapy as a means to connect with other sufferers and establish a support system. It may take several attempts before a suitable anti-depressant medication is found. Some patients may also develop a resistance to a certain type of medication and need to 58 periodically.Another treatment is animal-assisted therapy. Studies and surveys indicate that the presence of animal companions such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs can 59 feelings of loneliness or depression among some sufferers. Beyond the companionship the animal itself provides there may also be increased opportunities for 60 with other pet owners. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are a number of other health benefits associated with pet ownership, such as lowered blood pressure. In addition, some other alternative approaches may include exercise, dieting, etc, which many patients find have a 61 effect on relieving symptoms. Results of a study also suggest that correcting maladaptive social cognition (认知) offers the best chance of 62 loneliness.Nevertheless, loneliness can sometimes play an important role in the 63 process. In some people, temporary or prolonged loneliness can lead to notable artistic and creative expression, for example, as was the case with poet Emily Dickinson, and numerous musicians. This is not to imply that loneliness itself ensures this creativity, 64 , it may have an influence on the subject matter of the artist and more likely be present in individuals 65 creative activities.51. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.(A)Chimpanzees, long considered reluctant to share, apparently can display selfless tendencies, revealing one more key way our closest living relatives are like humans, scientists find. These findings could shed light on the evolution of altruism in humans.Previously, a belief was widely held that human altruism evolved only after humans split from their ape cousins about 6 million years ago. In recent years, however, research has revealed just how much chimpanzees have in common with us. They can hunt with spears, play with dolls and mourn their partn ers’ death."Most of the earlier studies had presented the apes with a complex implement that helped them deliver food to themselves or others, often so complicated that the experiments tested tool skills rather than social tendencies," De Waal told Live Science. "Ours is the first study that uses no such implement at all."In addition to using complex food-delivery systems, past experiments often placed the chimpanzees so far apart that they might not have realized how their actions benefited others. In these new, simplified experiments, two apes were housed next to each other with a screen through which they could see each other. Then, one chimpanzee had to choose between two differently colored tokens (币) from a bin, one of which represented a pro-social (亲社会的) option, the other a selfish option. The pro-social option would cause both chimpanzees to receive a piece of banana wrapped in paper. The selfish option only rewarded the ape who made the choice. In a study with seven adult female chimps placed into various pairs, the scientists found all the apes showed a definite preference for the pro-social option. "For me, the most important finding is that like us, chimpanzees take into account the needs and wishes of others," researcher Victoria Horner, said. The chimpanzees behaved especially altruistically toward partners who either patiently waited or gently reminded them that they were there by drawing attention to themselves. They were less likely to reward partners who pressured through making a fuss, begging persistently or spitting water at them. This is opposite to a long-standing view that the chimpanzees only share food under pressure.66. The word " altruism " (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to ______.A. selflessnessB. selfishnessC. willingnessD. reluctance67. Recent researches are performed with less complicated implements mainly to ______.A. test chimps’ social tendencies instead of tool skillsB. see whether chimps are willing to share food with othersC. find out if chimps are likely to reward partnersD. show that chimps are only good at using implements68. What can be learned from the passage?A. Chimps are usually unwilling to share.B. Chimps take others’ needs and wishes into consideration.C. It is more likely that chimps will reward partners who give them pressure.D. Human altruism evolved only after humans separated from their ape relatives.69. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. Evolution History of Altruism in HumansB. Similarities between Chimps and MankindC. Chimps Do Show Selfless BehaviorD. Chimps Only Share Food under Pressure70. We can learn from the passage that______.A. If an applicant wants more information, he can contact Director of the Honors Program except ______.A. by phoneB. in personC. by e-mailD. by fax(C)Exercise may help to safeguard the mind against depression through previously unknown effects on working muscles, according to a new study involving mice.Mental health experts have long been aware that even mild, repeated stress can contribute to the development of depression and other mood disorders in animals and people. Scientists have also known that exercise seems to cushion against depression. But precisely how exercise, a physical activity can lessen someone’s risk for dep ression, a mood state, has been mysterious. So for the new study, researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied the brains and behavior of mice in a complicated and novel fashion. We can’t ask mice if they are feeling cheerful or in low spirits. Instead, researchers have pictured certain behaviors that indicate depression in mice. If animals lose weight, stop seeking out a sugar solution when it’s available — because, probably, they no longer experience normal pleasures — or give up trying to escape from the cold-water zone just freeze in place, they are categorized as depressed. And in the new experiment, after five weeks of frequent but low-level stress, such as being lightly shocked, mice displayed exactly those behaviors. They became depressed. The scientists could then have tested whether exercise blunts (延缓) the risk of developing depression after stress by having mice run first. But, frankly, from earlier research, they wanted to know how, so they bred pre-exercised mice. A wealth of earlier research by these scientists and others had shown that aerobic exercise, in both mice and people, increases the production within muscles of an enzyme (酶) called PGC-1alpha. The Karolinska scientists suspected that this enzyme somehow creates conditions within the body that protect the brain against depression. Then, the scientists exposed the animals, which without exercising, were in high levels of PGC-1alpha to five weeks of mild stress. The mice responded with slight symptoms of worry. But they did not develop depression. They continued to seek out sugar and fought to get out of the cold-water zone. Their high levels of PGC-1alpha appeared to make them depression-resistant. Finally, to ensure that these findings are relevant to people, the researchers had a group of adult volunteers complete three weeks of frequent endurance training, consisting of 40 to 50 minutes of moderate cycling or jogging. The scientists conducted muscle biopsies (活体检查) before and after the program and found that by the end o f the three weeks, the volunteers’ muscle cells contained substantially more PGC-1alpha than at the study’s start. The finding of these results, in the simplest terms, is that “you reduce the risk of getting depression when you exercise,” said Maria Lindsk og, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute.74. The researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm conducted the new study hoping toknow______.A. if exercise cushions against depressionB. what can lead to depression in animals and peopleC. if stress can contribute to the development of depressionD. how exercise contributes to reducing someone’s risk for depression75. We can infer from the new experiment conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute that mice aredepressed except when ______.A. they stand still in placeB. they stop searching for the sugar waterC. they attempt to escape from the cold-water zoneD. they can’t experience normal pleasures any longer76. Researchers asked a group of adult volunteers to complete three weeks of frequent endurance training inorder to ______.A. know if exercise can help to safeguard the mind against depressionB. know if they can endure 40 to 50 minutes of moderate cycling or joggingC. confirm the findings above are also relevant to peopleD. ensure they can lose weight after moderate cycling or jogging77. It can be concluded from the passage that______.A. the enzyme called PGC-1alpha helps to ease depressionB. athletes are more likely to develop depression than ordinary peopleC. the mice with high levels of PGC-1alpha are easier to develop depressionD. in the past mental health specialists didn’t know exercise could help reduce depressionSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.By 2050, half of the world’s population will reside(居住)in the tropics—the relatively warm belt that circles the globe—according to State of the Tropics, a report released today. Rapid population growth, along with eco nomic growth, means that the region’s influence will grow in coming decades, the authors of the 500-page work predict. The project, initially launched in 2011, aimed to answer one significant question: Is life in the tropics improving? To find out, the researchers analyzed environmental, social, and economic indicators collected over 6 decades. It finds that the region has made “extraordinary progress” in many areas. For example, there’s been a 14% increase in the proportion of the population with access t o safe drinking water, and the number of protected areas is increasing. The tropics also have outperformed (胜过) the rest of the world in economic growth over the past 30 years; it now represents approximately 18.7% of global economic activity, up from 14.5% in 1980.Nevertheless, some challenges remain. Investment in research and development, for example, has increased modestly, but tropical nations still invest less than the rest of the world. “As a proportion of GDP the Rest of the World invests almost fo ur times as much in research and development than the Tropics,” concludes the report. The report also includes a new analysis of how climate change will affect the region. Many plant and animal species are moving poleward in an attempt to stay within their preferred environmental conditions in the tropics, the authors write. However, some organisms may not be able to keep pace with the changing conditions, they predict. As a result, they can experience population declines or go extinct. In addition, an expanded tropical zone also threatens health and safety issues, the authors warn. As regions become more suitable to insects such as mosquitoes and ticks, the prevalence of insect-bornediseases such as malaria, dengue, and Lyme disease could rise, causing a burden to human health and the economy.Bruna, a researcher, says he sees a lot to be concerned about in the report. “While we’ve made incredible advances in some areas, I think the risks for the tropics that are highlighted in this report are things that we really need to be concerned about.”(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS)78. The growth of both __________ displays that the influence of the tropics will increase in the future.79. What was the original purpose of the project State of the Tropics?80. According to the report, some organisms can experience population drop and extinction because of their __________.81. An expanded tropical zone will threaten health and safety issues; apart from that, what are the other existing challenges mentioned in the passage?第II卷 (共47分)I. part-time jobCSometimes people call each other "freaked-cat", but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream.Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions (feelings), our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too.get ready to defend ourselves or run.Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger —or hit somebody—and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept yourmouth shut?It isn't always clever to express your feelings freely.Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop. It can actually be bad for your health.(It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.)Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them.but before long you' d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are that you'd see little fruit flies flying all over them. They'd be rotten. You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them.just like those bananas.66.The best title for this article is_____.A.Emotions Affect Our BodiesB.What Happens to A Frightened CatC.What Happens to An Excited PersonD.Feelings That People Have67.What does the word "freaked" mean in the first sentence?A.excited B.scared C.angry D.shocked 68.According to the passage, we may conclude that we human beings_____.A.have fewer problems than animalsB.have the same problems as animalsC.have more problems than animalsD.have cleverer problems than animals69.If you hold in your feelings,_____.A.gradually they'll disappearB.they won't exist any moreC.they will fly all overD.your body stays tense70.The author wrote this article in order to_____.A.tell us that it isn't good to keep feelings insideB.give us some advice on how to express our feelingsC.make us face the problem that we have to deal with feelingsD.make us know that it isn't always wise to express our feelings freelyPart IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions : Read the following passage.Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.A busy life can be personally satisfying, but it may make you feel too tired to achieve the inner peace that will connect you with your true happiness.Begin with simplifying your life and working towards a more peaceful state of mind.Recognize the differences between the things you need and the things you want. Our culture provides us with the message that materials will make our lives better. The reality is that most of these things will complicate our lives without bringing true happiness.Free yourself —learn to be satisfied with fewer materials and greater simplicity. If you let someone else define your life.you're missing the chance to follow your own desires.Your inner life is weakened when you are limited by conformity (遵从).Why do you give up your freedom and allow all of your decisions to be defined by what others think you "should" do? Think for yourself.Let your passions be your guide.Life is full of opportunities to earn money and give services.Learn new skills and make new friends. Some of us want them all and fill up our timetable with all kinds of activities.Rushing from one activity to another leaves you with no time to slow down.No matter how worthy you think your activities are, rethink them.Keep the ones that are most important and leave out the ones that are adding to the pace of your life with little return.Life is forever changing, and you will never reach a point of simplicity and endless happiness. But each moment you spend on the path to simplicity does have the possibility to bring happiness to your life.Section B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage.Answer the.questions according to the information given in the passage..There is a famous expression in English: "Stop the world; I want to get off!" This expression refers to a feeling of panic, or stress that makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again."Stress" means pressure or tension. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life.Too much stress results in physical.emotional and mental health problems. There are numerous physical effects of stress.Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate.make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure.Stress can affect the respiratory (与呼吸有关的)system. It can lead to asthma (哮喘).It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide.Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches and problems digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress.Emotions are also easily affected by stress.People suffering from stress often feelanxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are understress.they often overreact to little problems. For example, a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice.Stress can make people angry.moody or nervous.Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses.Depression, an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress.Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress.Eating disorders, such as anorexia (厌食), are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body.It affects the emotions.Untreated, it may eventually result in mental illness.Stress has a great influence on the health and well-being of our bodies, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.81.According to the passage, what are the consequences of too much stress? (No more than 6 words)82.Why do normally gentle parents sometimes shout at their children for small mistakes? (No more than 10 words)83.List three parts of the body affected by stress in this passage.(No more than 6 words)84.What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 8 words)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below in Chinese.在很多学校食堂,浪费粮食的现象屡见不鲜。

According to a new study from the University of Georgia, those students have much worse study skills and are four times more likely to stop schooling. They use twice as much alcohol and tobacco than their single classmates."Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships," said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and Head of the department of Health Promotion and Behaviour.Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grades. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviours, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students7 academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school."At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and students with highest dating as having the worst study skills,"according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviours that lead to academic success such as doing homework for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters."Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications (并发症)of dating a co-worker," Orpinas said. "When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner (前伴侣)dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and distract (分散注意力)them from studying. ""Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school," Orpinas concluded.61. We can learn from the passage that students who date in middle school may _____.A. be less likely to use alcohol and tobaccoB. enjoy better school livesC. be more likely to hurt othersD. have poorer academic performances62. During his study, Orpinas _____.A. found study skills have connection with their frequency of datingB. completed questionnaires about the students7 academic effortsC. completed a survey and a report each yearD. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th63. Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities except _____.A. being kind and helpfulB. being well organizedC. being diligentD. finishing assigned schoolwork64. What can possibly happen to those who date in middle school after they break up?A. They will think it reasonable to get depressed.B. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes.C. Their attention to studying will be affected.D. They don't want to see each other any longer.65. According to the passage, Orpinas holds a(n)_____ attitude towards dating in middle school.A. indifferentB. negativeC. positiveD. supportiveCIf you are a fan of J. K Rowling and her Harry Potter book series, you may be fascinated with the idea of an invisible coat. You are not alone. Scientists have been working hard to produce a material which will make buildings as well as people invisible. Now a Canadian company claims to have succeeded with magical textile (纺织品)called "Quantum Stealth".British Columbia based on Hyperstealth Technology Corporation claims that the material makes its wearers completely invisible, even to people with night glasses. Also, just like the young wizard's coat, it is light-weight and does not need cameras, batteries, lights or mirrors to operate. But best of all, it is cheap to make.As to how it really works, the company keeps it a top secret. Besides stating that they havesuccessfully managed to bend light waves, so that they go round the material instead of through it, the company is not giving out any details. What it does detail is all the good uses that Quantum Stealth could be put to-ranging from protecting US and Canadian soldiers forced to step into enemy region, to allowing special armed forces to carry out surprise attack without any fear of being seen. And if that is not enough they even imagine creating aircrafts and submarines (潜水艇)that can go completely undetected. To prove that Quantum Stealth really exists, the company has released photos and even a video showing its magical properties. For those that are still sceptical, they have only one thing to say both the US and Canadian military officials have witnessed it live and are so impressed that they are working with Hyper stealth Technology to create the next generation "survival blanket" that could make the soldier invisible all at once! If this is indeed true, we have only one question: When will this magical fabric beavailable to the rest of us?66. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To bring in the topic.B. To draw peopled attention to J. K Rowling and her idea.C. To make the article interesting.D. To introduce the Canadian company.67. People have no faith in the photos and video provided at all.D. The new product can still be improved for better use.Part ]Y Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. When it comes to mental health, what immediately occur to our mind are depression, stress and anxiety. People will also think about the causes of poor mental health, such as someone livingin poor conditions, someone living in an abusive situation or someone who is suffering an addiction. There are many things in life that can contribute to poor mental health and there are just as many things a person can do to improve their mental health. Many have heard that maintaining one' s physical health can go a long way in helping to maintain a person's mental health. Others will tell you that eating well, getting enough sleep and having some confidence are all things that a person can do in order to improve and maintain their good mental health. However, another deciing thing that appears to help with improving a person's mental health is that most people tend to feel better after cleaning their living space thoroughly. Taking the time to clean the home from top to bottom is like cleaning one’s life. The dirt and dust are done away with and the house has a fresher, more comfortable atmosphere that the person can feel happier and more relaxed in. Of course, it might also be a good idea to consult a therapist (治疗专家). Online therapists are always available for inquiries about how one can improve their mental health in other ways besides cleaning their home. Anyone who finds that they are suffering from an overall decline in their mental health should seriously consider contacting an online therapist. The online therapists can help work with the patients to find out why they might be feeling down, and they can then suggest what the patients could do in order to improve their mental health. Life is meant to be enjoyed and those who are not happy and have a depressed outlook on life can't fully enjoy life.Title: Maintaining 71B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.Millions of people all over the world are fond of playing soccer, but there have only been a few players who were really great. How did these players get that way-was it through training and practice, or are great players "born, not made"?First, the birthplace plays an important role. These players come from places that have had famous stars in the past-players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup-three from South America and three from Western Europe. There has never been a great national team-or a really great player-rom North America or from Asia.Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four. Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighbourhood-a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool which produced the Beatles (甲壳虫乐队),had one of the best English soccer teams in recentyears. Pele practiced in the street with a "ball" made of rags (破布). And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums (贫民窟)of Belfast. All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn’t explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.81. Where do the countries that have ever won the World Cup usually come from? (No more than5 words)82. What' s the purpose of using the underlined sentence in the last paragraph ' only one becamePele"'? (No more than 11 words)83. List three factors that contribute to the soccer players becoming great. (No more than 8words)84. Why are Liverpool and Brazilian streets mentioned in the passage? (No more than 13 words)Section C (25 marks)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below in Chinese.近日,一长沙市民李先生在上班途中刮擦了路边一停靠私家车后主动留下联系方式,这一新闻引起了社会对诚信问题的热议。

AWhile we are on the subject of crime, our listener question this week comes from Mohamad Firouzi in Iran. He wants to know about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison that once operated there.Alcatraz Island is in the harbor of San Francisco, California. It is best known for being a federal prison, which was also called “The Rock.” It was once the most famous prison in America. Alcatraz was a military prison from the late eighteen fifties until the nineteen thirties. Then it became a federal prison for the country’s worst criminals. These included murderers, bank robbers and kidnappers. One of the main reasons federal officials chose Alcatraz Island to detain these prisoners was because they thought it would be impossible for prisoners to escape.Cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island. Also, the distance between the island and San Francisco is too far for most humans to swim. No prisoner was ever officially reported to have successfully escaped. However, in nineteen sixty-two, three men broke out of the prison. Each man worked very hard at night for many months to cut through the stone wall of his cell. They made false heads out of paper, paint and hair. On the night of June eleventh, the men placed the heads in their beds to make it look as if they were sleeping. Then, the prisoners escaped through the holes in their cells to get to the water. The men were never seen or heard from again. It is believed that they drowned while trying to swim to San Francisco. The prison closed in nineteen sixty-three because of the high cost of keeping prisoners there and the need for major repairs. The last prisoners were moved to other jails. In nineteen seventy-two, the United States Congress passed a bill creating the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz Island and the old prison are part of this area. Each year, more than one million people visit Alcatraz to see the prison ers’ cells and listen to stories about the jail’s history. But unlike the prisoners who once lived there, visitors can escape from the prison whenever they want and return back across the harbor to San Francisco.21. The text mainly tells us________.A. about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison there.B. about the history of Alcatraz Island.C. about a military prison.D. about the subject of crime.22. Why did federal officials make Alcatraz the most famous prison in America?A. Because no prisoner successfully escaped from the prison.B. Because Alcatraz was Alcatraz Island.C. Because Alcatraz was a military prison.D. Because cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island.23. Paragraph 5 is written to ________.A. tell us the three prisoners escaped the prison.B. prove prisoners couldn’t successfully escape from the prison.C. tell us how prisoners escaped the prison.D. tell us the three prisoners could make false heads out of paper, paint and hair.24. Now Alcatraz ________.A. is a place of interest.B. detains some prisoners.C. is where the United States Congress is.D. is still the most famous prison.BLast Thursday, I had the pleasure of visiting with Deputy Superintendent Pedro Martinez, Principal Neddy Alvarez and her staff at Western High School, located in the Clark County School District, in Las Vegas. The school undertook a comprehensive effort to completely transform the culture of the school and added a motivated group of talented teachers. Western altered(改变)the school day to add opportunities for students to get additional credits toward graduation and created smaller learning groups. As part of these comprehensive changes, the school’s leadership also focused on four main reforms to transform their school.First, improvements started with the change in the relationship between the school and students to create a caring atmosphere at the school. Using the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” strategies, school leadership and teachers began building a trusting environment and students and families described seeing changes aimed at improving student outcomes and ensuring the success of every student. The school day was altered to add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation. Students and teachers were grou ped into “houses,” so that smaller groups of teachers and counselors(辅导员)could create one-on-one relationships with students. Teachers and counselors said that the altered school day provides time to address student’s individual concerns and develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation. The school also made changes to encourage parents to support school and encourage real dialogues between parents and the teachers and leaders at Western. Funded in part through the United Way, the school created a family engagement center to get parents more involved in their children’s education, particularly parents of English language learners. In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a stunt during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried. The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel`s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery. To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the `Lisa` mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time. The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators catalogue the tube`s contents- but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington`s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.33.Who found the time capsule buried by Steve Jobs?A. One problem is that in space there’s no physical sensation to let you know when you’re upside down and astronauts have to rely on possible clues from their surroundings. A few hours after reaching orbit(轨道), one in three of all astronauts will experience space sickness—a feeling rather like carsickness. There is also the problem of protection from the extreme hazards(危险) of space such as constant meteorite bombardment(陨星轰击) and radiation. It is going to take some clever technology to keep rockets and astronautsfrom these dangers.Even with a well-protected spaceship, space travel isn’t going to be easy. No matter what you travel in, it is going to be a long flight in space! Science fiction writers often imagine using suspended animation(动画), a kind of forced long-term sleep, as a way for astronauts to escape the boredom of long missions. An even stronger measure might be to freeze the astronauts. We already use cryogenic(低温) techniques to preserve dead bodies and store human embryos(胚胎). Freezing living adults may not be so far away, but perhaps we don’t have to do that. Perhaps we should use our existing technology and send frozen embryos to the far corners of universe.Hundreds of years from now, billions and billions of miles away, the embryos will be thawed(解冻) and their hearts will start beating. These astronauts of the future will not grow inside a mother’s body but will be produced in a machine. They will be brought up by robot. It may seem strange but one day it might just happen.69. We can learn from the passage that _______.A. scientists already use existing technology to store embryos for space flightB. cryogenic techniques will practically be used for space flight in hundreds of yearsC. it may be easier to freeze embryos than to freeze adults on the spaceshipD. most astronauts will suffer from space sickness70. In the future astronauts for extreme long journeys will grow up_____.A. before they go into spaceB. during the space tripC. when they are inside mother’s bodyD. after they return from space71. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the bright future of space flightB. the possibility to train embryo astronautsC. the physical and mental conditions of astronautsD. the problems and the possible solutions to them in long space flights( C )NASDAQ, acronym for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation system, is one of the largest markets in the world for the trading of stocks. The number of companies listed on NASDAQ is more than that on any of the other stock exchange in the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMSE). The majority of companies listed on NASDAQ are smaller than most of those on the NYSE and AMSX. NASDAQ has become known as the home of new technology companies, particularly computer and computer-related businesses. Trading on NASDAQ is started by stock brokers(经纪人) acting on behalf of their clients. The brokers negotiate with market makers who concentrate on trading specific stocks to reach a price for the stock.Unlike other stock exchange, NASDAQ has no central location where trading takes place. Instead, its market makers are located all over the country and make trades by telephone and via the Internet. Because brokers and market makers trade stocks directly instead of on the floor of a stock exchange, NASDAQ is called an over-the-counter market. The term over-the –counter refers to the direct nature of the trading, as in a store where goods are handed over a counter.Since its inception(开市) in 1971, the NASDAQ Stock Market has been the innovator(创新者). As the world’s first electronic stock market, NASDAQ long ago set a precedent(先例) fortechnological trading innovation that is unrivaled(无对手的). Now ready to become the world’s first truly global market, the NASDAQ Stock Market is the market of choice for business industry leaders worldwide. By providing an efficient environment for raising capital NASDAQ has helped thousands of companies achieve their desired growth and successfully make the leap into public ownership.72. What is TRUE of NASDAQ?A.It is the largest stock market in the world.B.IT lists only small companies.C.It lists all the new technology companies.D.It lists the biggest number of companies.73. The word‖ negotiate‖(Line 8,Para.1) means ________.A. discussB. argueC. interfereD. cope74. NASDAQ is also known as an over-the –counter market because it seems______.A. a stock marketB. a stock exchangeC. a counterD. a store75. Since its founding in 1971, NASDAQ has contributed to ______.A.raising money for many companiesB.creating an efficient environment for many companiesC.the expected development of many companiesD.the unexpected development of many companiesSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A - F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76. ______________________Current research into the human gene system is helping us understand why people have predispositions(易患某病倾向)to certain diseases. Knowing our genetic makeup can help us to judge whether or not we may be stricken by particular illness, such as cancer. Even before birth, we are able to do genetic screenings to determine what a child's genetic disorder will be. Scientists have already isolated and identified the genes responsible for the more than 4,000 genetic diseases that affect human beings.77. ______________________The implications of this knowledge are astonishing. In addition to predicting genetic predisposition towards diseases, gene therapies may provide new treatments or cures for serious diseases. Millions of people already use genetically engineered drugs to treat heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and strokes(中风). But with the research that is now being conducted, we may find curesto many more diseases. In the near future, genetic experimentation will also allow parents to select the traits of their children. Genetic traits that determine height, weight, eye and hair color will be able to be controlled, and many parents are excited about this potential.78. ______________________Many people, however, are unwilling to accept the possibilities genetic research.. For example, one reason some women do not use the largest genetic testing for breast cancer is because they are afraid they will be discriminated against. Another problem is that many people do not want to discover their weakness. What if they learn that they have a disease for which there are no medical cures? How will such knowledge affect their lives? Do people really want to know what they will die of?79. ______________________Many people believe that history has not always shown human decision-making to be bright when it comes to ethical(道德的)choices. Jeremy Rifkin is probably the most well known opponent of genetic engineering. He believes that humans are not responsible enough to experiment with genes and should not "play God" He asks, "Just because it can be done, does that mean it should be done?" He points out that our society will eventually look and act the same if parents select the traits of their children, and he questions the desirability of such a society.80. ______________________One of the fears expressed about genetic experimentation involves privacy. Already blood sample taken from patients in hospitals have been used for genetic research without the patients' permission. Most people would agree that one's health and genetic makeup are private concerns. But if insurance companies gain access to this information, it could have a large impact on insurance coverage or costs; if employers gain access to the information, it could have a large impact on hiring or promotion decisions. The possibilities for discrimination are obvious. Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.(No more than 12 words)A long-awaited final report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concludes that foods from healthy cloned animals and their offspring are as safe as those from ordinary animals, effectively removing the last US regulatory barrier to the marketing of meat and milk from cloned cattle, pigs and goats. The 968-page "final risk assessment," not yet released but obtained by The Washington Post, finds no evidence to support people’s concerns that food from clones may have hidden risk s. But, recognizing that a majority of consumers are wary of(谨慎的)food from clones—and that cloning could damage the good image of American milk and meat—the report includes hundreds of pages of raw data so that others can see how it came to its conclusions. The report also acknowledges that human health concerns are not the only subject raised by the coming-out of cloned farm animals.―Moral, religious and ethical concerns have been raised,‖ the agency notes in a document accompanying the report. But the report is ―exactly a science-based assessment.‖ It reports, because the agency is not authorized by law to consider those issues. In practice, it will be years before foods from clones make their way to store shelves in large quantities, in part because the clones themselves are too valuable to kill or milk. Instead, the expensive animals’replicas(复制品) of some of the finest farm animals ever born — will be used firstly as breeding stock to create what supporters say will be a new generation of superior farm animals. When food from those animals hits the market, the public may yet have its say. FDA officials have said they do not expect to require food from clones to be labeled as such, but they may allow foods from ordinary animals to be labeled as not from clones.81. What conclusion has FDA drawn after the public waited for a long time?82. Foods from clones won’t be available soon partly because _________________.83. With the appearance of cloned farm animals, people care more about _________________ problems.84. How will foods from ordinary animals be labeled?第II卷I. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.II. Grammar and Vocabulary (26分)Section ADirections: After reading the passages below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.(A)Many kinds of music can stir the imagination and produce strong feeling. For some people, romantic composers such as Chopin and Tchaikovsky enhance feelings of love and sympathy. Religious and spiritual music 25 help some people feel peace or lessen their pain. But one musician seems to have a unique ability of healing(治愈) the human body –Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Scientists have found Mozart’s music to be remarkable in its ability 26 (calm) its listeners. It can also increase their perceptions, and help them expressthemselves more clearly. Many amazing cases have been documented using Mozart 27 a healing aid. For example, a tiny premature baby 28 (name) Krissy, who weighed just 1.5 pounds at birth, was on total life support. Doctors thought she had little chance of survival. Her mother insisted on playing Mozart for Krissy, and thought 29 saved her daughter’s life. Krissy lived,30 she was very small for her age and slower than the average child. At the age of four, she showed an interest in music and her parents gave her violin lessons.31 their astonishment, Krissy was able to play musical pieces from memory that were far beyond the ability of an average four-year-old. 32 (play) music helped her improve in all areas of her life.(B)Touch is the first tool we turn to when we face pain. We react similarly to 33 injured toe and a broken heart, tenderly 34 (grasp) the affected area. We are all born with the power to heal ourselves and to heal others because healing energy does not come from within but from outside ourselves. The energy is there for anyone to use, and no formal training 35 (require). When you have the intent to heal, and love is your only motive, you become a channel for healing energy. Through the simple touch of hands, you can use that universal healing energy to comfort those who 36 (experience) pain or distress. In performing healing energy work, it is necessary that you let your intuition (直觉) guide you to the affected area. Just imagine a healing light being drawn in through the top of your head and flowing through your hands. The energy will begin to flow once you have made a physical connection, and your touch will help awaken the body’s capacity for self-healing. The affected areas of the body, 37 were previously tense or tight, will relax with enough healing energy. 38 (try) not to feel like you aren’t helping if you don’t feel the flow. The work you are doing is indeed helping.Understanding 39 energy works is less important than consciously making use of it. Performing a loving healing treatment on your loved ones can be a wonderful experience that brings you closer together. And as the healing energy passes through you, it can awaken a feeling within you that helps you 40 (well) understand the interactions between the spiritual, physical and mental selves.Section BDirections:Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.Genes are found in every plant or animal cell. They are the basic units of life that are capable of passing specific 41 from one generation to another. For example, whether you are tall or short depends upon the genes that you 42 from your parents. Cloning plants or animals is a process that 43 the production of a new organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which cells were taken. Although this 44 has aroused great interest around the world over the last ten years or so, cloning is not something new in nature. Most mothers give birth to just one child at a time; however, on rare 45 a mother may give birth to a set of twins. If these two children are identical twins, then they are in fact naturally 46 clones of each other, although not of the parents. The reason for them being clones is that the two children originated from one 47 egg and consequently they are genetically identical. Twins that develop from two 48 eggs are not clones of each other.Cloning also occurs naturally in plants. Strawberry plants reproduce themselves by sending out runners, or modified stems, and these runners take root a short distance from the 49 plant and start to grow, and to produce fruit. In time, this plant sends out runners of its own that also take root. This is known as asexual reproduction; in other words, reproduction that does not involve the fusion (融合) of male and female cells. The newly 50 plants are clones of the original. In addition to strawberry plants, certain types of flowers and grasses reproduce themselves in the same way. Throughout history, people have also facilitated cloning by taking small cuttings from plants and then growing them into new plants. This form of cloning is called vegetative propagation.III. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)I used to think of myself as a fairly cosmopolitan(全球的)sort of person, but my bookshelves told a different story as my literature collection mainly consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I hardly ever readanything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors. So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing. With no idea how to go about this, thinking that I was unlikely to find books from nearly 200 nations from my local bookshop, I decided to ask the planet’s readers for help. I created a blog called A Year of Readin g the World, appealing for suggestions of titles that I could read in English. The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the world were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries. Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works otherwise unavailable to the 62% of British people who only speak English. Even with such support, however, sourcing books was no easy task.Tracking down stories in some unfamiliar places even took as much time as the reading and blogging. It was hard to fit it all in around work and many were the nights when I sat bleary-eyed (睡眼惺忪的)into the small hours to make sure I stuck to my target of reading one book every 1.87 days.Still, one by one, the country names on the list made at the start of the year transformed into vital, exciting places filled with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed exotic became familiar to me –places I could identify with. At its best, I learned, fiction makes the world real.66.What help did the writer receive to achieve his goal?A. Some writers sent him their original works.B. The local bookstore provided books from 200 nations even if it was unlikely.C. Some writers did research work on what books are popular.D. Some people mailed books from their own countries.67. Visitors can buy reduced tickets as long as they make a reservation.(C)Have you ever seen harmful robots refuse to die, no matterhow fiercely people fight back? As is known, it is always the case insome of the scariest science fiction. Now, science fiction has changed into science fact. For the firsttime, researchers have created a robotic machine that can stand abeating and keep on walking. Developed by scientists from CornellUniversity and the University of Vermont, the new robot looks likea spider with four legs.Until now, even the most advanced robot was almost certain tobreak down when damaged. That’s because its inside computersimply doesn’t know how to operate the machine after its shape haschanged. To get around this problem, the spidery robot’s developers equipped their invention with eight motors and two sensors that read how the machine is tilting(倾斜). The motors and sensors all provide electrical signals to the machine’s software.Using this information, the system follows a new procedure to figure out the machine’s shape at any given moment. The program chooses from among 100,000 possible arrangements of parts. From there, the computer considers a wide variety of possible next steps, and it calculates how best to move the robot forward the longest possible distance, before trying to move again.“The new strategy is a major advance in robotics”, Professor Skehan, a scientist in Cornell University says, “and it’s far from scary”. The technology may someday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedom to people who lack them. The new knowledge might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.“Designing robots that can adapt to changing environments and can compensate(补偿) for damage has been a difficult problem,” says neuroscientist Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in Bloomington. “This work provides a new way toward solving this important problem.”74. What’s the most important characteristic of the new robot?A. Its shape is like a spider with four legs.B. It can repair itself and move again after damaged.C. It is operated by its inside computer.D. It is certain to change the direction when damaged.75. it can be learnt from the passage that ________.A. animals have no sense of place in spaceB. people have difficulty in figuring out how to get to his destinationC. scientists don’t understand people’s ability of locationD. scientists want to know where people and animals are going76. We can infer from the view of Professor Skehan that ________.A. the new technology will help people have a better sense of spaceB. the new technology will help people grow new arms and legsC. designing robots can help to be adaptable to the changing of the environmentD. the new technology will have some medical benefits77. The purpose of the author to write this article is to ________.A. introduce a new robot that will not dieB. discuss science fiction and new inventionC. recommend the latest inventionD. explain the relationship between robot and medicineSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.With 26 British prime ministers, 58 Nobel prize winners, over 150 Olympic medals and a "notable alumni" list that reads like a historical hall of fame, the institutions of Oxford and Cambridge –collectively known as Oxbridge – are seen, by many, as the dream alma mater(母校).However, as admission season dawns, and the October 15 deadline for Oxbridge inches ever closer, many students may wonder what makes the UK's top two institutions so special. Why does Oxbridge symbolize the academic dream for so many? Do the universities deserve the reputation they hold in the minds of so many teenagers, parents and academics? There is no doubt that both Oxford and Cambridge have a long standing history of academia. Yet, what is often overlooked is the strong reputation of countless other universities in the UK.A simple click on Google can tell students that the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, for example, has over 18 Nobel Prize winners and 50 world leaders. University College London attracts students from150 countries and has exchange and research links with nearly 300 overseas universities. Manchester University has the largest student union of all UK universities and boasts alumni such as Niels Bohr and James Chadwick.I suddenly realized the Oxbridge effect when I was out in London with friends. I met some new people and was surprised by their reaction when I told them I was going to study at Cambridge. One person even got down on one knee and kissed my hand. From then on, I told people I was going on a gap year. Although I knew that Oxbridge provides a good education, I had never expected to get such extreme reactions. It was this that made me start to feel uncomfortable about the way that Oxbridge is viewed. The Cambridge Tab, the university's student newspaper, has argued that what makes Cambridge special is the fact that the students are told that they are unique and a cut above the rest, so they believe it. Ron Weasley never took the Felix Felicis potion that Harry Potter pretended to give him – all he had to do to win the Quidditch match was to believe he was great. For students applying now, yes, you will receive a world class education at Oxbridge, but you will find the same at numerous other universities throughout the country. Every time you hear about the brilliance of Oxbridge, consider that just because many believe, it does not have to be so.78. The examples of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, University College London and Manchester University serve to illustrate the point that _________________________________in the UK.79. According to the passage, we can find that people ___________________ the students at the Oxbridge.80. How did the writer avoid over-reaction from people to her admission into Cambridge?______________________________________________________________________81.
