For years, scientists said “no.” or “we don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人;生物).Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intel ligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, theymay be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”36. What are Seth Shostak and Alexandera Barnett? (No more than 5 words)____________________________________________________________________________ 37. Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past? (No more than 10 words)____________________________________________________________________________ 38. Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak? AWe walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn’t even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched, mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop (拖把). She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.”“Yes, I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren’t you working late?”Mum just pushed harder, each swipe of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book. After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum nodded politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.”Outside, Mum told me, “Dagma is fine. No fever. ”“You see her, Mum?”“Of course. I told her about the ho spital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It’s a fine hospital. But the floors! A mop is no good. You need a brush. ”21. Which of the following words can best describe Mum?A. Clever.B. Hard –working.C. Warmly –hearted.D. Strange.BSpeaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have. The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity. A friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves, though usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug and turn a blind eye.Not only the bad things affect friendship ---good activities do too, such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them, but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends you will have no happiness.25. According to the author, true friendship _____.A. is easy to getB. deepens with timeC. needs managementD. affects one’s happiness26. Old friends and old wines are best.B. A friend without faults will never be found.C. A life without a friend is a life without a sun.D. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.CDangerous as they are, extreme sports remain appealing among many Australian young people! Camp Xtreme is the perfect test of your heart.Kite SurfingIt’s the exciting mixture of kite, board and waves. The idea of using a kite to accelerate speed seems like a new challenge, yet the art of kite flying dates back to the 13th-century Chinese when it was used as a simple means of transport.Catch a wind and you’re moving —up, down and across the surf. “It’s always exciting. You’d jump 5 feet or 35 feet. You never know if you’re going to go up in the air, and your heart is just going boom, boom, boom.”CoasteeringIt is by far the best activity and the event that everyone is still talking about. This is exploring the coastline without worrying about a coastal path or finding a rocky bay blocking your route. You climb, dive and swim from one place to a nother. With Coasteering, you don’t have to be able to swim as the wet suit and buoyancy(浮力) aid will keep you floating when you are in the water.Sky DivingTraditional parachuting(跳伞) doesn’t sound risky enough. So now sky diving is the name for jumping from a plane and listening to your heart beating heavily as you move fast towards earth before you open your parachute at the last moment.Mountain BikingIt’s been around so long that bikers are no longer satisfied with just going up and down a mountain. Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough land, using specially adapted mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but include features designed to improve strength and performance in rough areas. For details, please call us on 1300-792-668 or click here: .au.29. Sky diving.D. Mountain biking.32. We can infer from the passage that _______.A. kites were the main means of transport in ChinaB. swimming skills play a key role in CoasteeringC. parachuting is the least popular sports at presentD. mountain biking requires more than riding common bikesDMany children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance(零用钱). The purpose is to let them learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. In any case, parents should make clear what the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If so, they’ll learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. It is to show them that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.Allowances give children a chance to experience what they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or give it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it. Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: They have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children learn about personal finance.33. By receiving an allowance, children can learn ______.A. how to spend money from experienceB. when to avoid making mistakesC. what they should do next at a young ageD. what they can do with money earned34. Giving children an allowance can mostly help them ______.A. cut their living costsB. learn to plan for the futureC. earn a living when youngD. get some financial knowledge35. What is the best title for the passage?A. Allowance, a great way to educate childrenB. Allowance, a costly burden for childrenC. Give allowances to children at onceD.

Sometimes I think I’m the only girl who notices these quiet but beautiful things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded restaurant, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri.Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books against her chest and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. One day at lunch, most tables being full, I had nowhere to sit. Valeri sat alone, book in hand. I walked over to her, “Is that a good book?” Valeri gave a small nod and went back to reading. “What’s it about?” I asked. After seconds of silence, she looked at me, her eyes shining, “Well, it’s about a dragon! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes playing one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches (孵化) and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big.”Two weeks later, I was sitting in the auditorium (礼堂) enjoying the talent show. Then a shy girl walked on stage. I recognized her immediately. Valeri held a violin in one hand and a bow in the other. She started to play. The notes formed a soft, sweet tune (曲调). The auditorium fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished. I smiled to myself. Valeri wasn’t just “a quiet girl”. She knew about wonderful books and could play the violin like nothing I’d ever heard. Like a butterfly, she was beautiful and amazing when you looked closely.1. It’s not just a time matter; people think it’s boring to spend time on their health. In fact, you can do some simple things to get healthier and have fun. There’re some fun things that hardly seem like they are for keeping you healthy at all, but they do help. The first thing you can do is singing. Singing improves your oxygen(氧气) flow, which in turn is good for your skin and immune system(免疫系统). It’s also good for your brain. Another feel-good and health-improving activity is laughing. You can watch a funny movie. Laughing is a healthy way to reduce stress and pain, improve brain function, lower blood pressure and protect the heart.Laughing and singing might go together, but for something completely normal that you do every day, you should eat to stay healthy. It’s unhealthy not to eat breakfast or try to work on an empty stomach. You can eat some fruit or other healthy snacks instead of missing a meal.Exercise is important to staying healthy, but it often feels more like work than fun. One thing you can do to have more fun is attend a dance class. Dancing in a safe environment is good exercise as well as fun. Taking classes in kung fu can be a lot of fun too. It can be a great way to lose weight, but you should probably consult your doctor before starting if you are in bad health or very overweight.5. Or perhaps you picked up on it while looking through your social media apps (社交媒体软件) . You guessed it——we’re becoming a foodie (吃货) culture. For some, that means photographing every dish, but others are taking it one step further. Sophia Hampton, a senior at Staples High School in US, chooses to make her own food. She has been published in Future Chefs, a cookbook of recipes (食谱) by teens.Hampton’s best advice for those who want to be foodies is to get in the kitchen.“Start cooking,” she said.“There are so many resources online, like recipes and articles about food. Go to your local farmers’ market and start cooking with them.”Besides blogs and online resources, there are also hands-on cooking classes for students. The Chopping Block, a Chicago cooking school, offers many different classes for teens, including courses on chocolate and French food.By attending cooking classes, surfing online and going to restaurants, you can find endless recipes. But sometimes becoming a real foodie means being behind a camera. As our food-loving culture becomes more popular and teen-friendly, social media apps like Facebook, have become major players in food culture.“Getting involved in foodie culture is as easy as having a camera and a social media app,” on e foodie said. “I always go to streets and farmers’ markets to take beautiful pictures of food. Wherever food prices are expensive, the photos are free.”9. What does Hampton advise those who want to be foodies to do?A.Post their recipes online. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along. After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters (汉字). He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip. This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.12.
