3. 主人公としての少年は一人の母がいる。
少年の父はもはや帰らぬ人となったので、母は一人の息子を学校へ送らせるため、朝早くから夜遅くまで骨身を惜しまずに懸命に働いたのである。
現在の境遇というと、少年は親孝行のことを考えて、自分のいつも頼りきった母親を守るため、自分の意志で、予科練に進んで、特攻隊員の一人となり、さらに、勝つ見込みが全くないその戦争及び日本軍国主義の犠牲品となる。
