定额市鞍钢阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解基础训练精品题(110)及答案阅读理解-----Passage three(Advertisers Perform a Useful Service to the Community)Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they’re always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. ‘It’s iniquitous,’ they say, ‘that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays…’The poor old consumer! He’d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn’t create mass markets for pr oducts. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement. Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the ‘hatch, match and dispatch’ column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or ‘agony’ column. No other itemin a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It’s the best advertisement for advertising there is!1.What is main idea of this passage?A. Advertisement.B. The benefits of advertisement.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. The costs of advertisement.2.The attitude of the author toward advertisers isA. appreciative.B. trustworthy.C. critical.D. dissatisfactory.3.Why do the critics criticize advertisers?A. Because advertisers often brag.B. Because critics think advertisement is a “waste of money”.C. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.D. Because customers pay more.4.Which of the following is Not True?A. Advertisement makes contribution to our pockets and we may know everything.B. We can buy what we want.C. Good quality products don’t need to be advertised.D. Advertisement makes our life colorful.5.The passage isA. Narration.B. Description.C. Criticism.D. 高考英语阅读理解训练附参考答案高考英语阅读理解训练1:Life in the ClearTransparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet—as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch.Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless theyre eating it, or unless something is eating them.”And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become seethrough? Its trickier than you might think. The objects around you are visible because they interact with light.Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射)light, bouncing it away from its original path.Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily. But a transparent object doesnt absorb or scatter light, at least not very much. Light can pass through it without bending or stopping.Thatmeans a transparent object doesnt look very different from the surrounding air or water. You dont see it—you see the things behind it.To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light.Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesnt have pigments, so its tissues wont absorb light.According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.Animals are built of many different materials—skin, fat, and more —and light moves through each at a different speed.Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters.Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat.Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be seethrough.Others build a large, clear mass of nonliving jellylike(果冻状的)material and spread themselves over it.Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how theyre doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear:for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a nontransparent milky white.*大意:你见过透明生物吗?*介绍了透明的海洋生物。

Take my family's last vacation. It was my sixyearold son's winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my ninemonthold and took off for home. The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged—okay, ordered—them to wait it out at the airport to “earn” more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. 定额市鞍钢阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解基础训练精品题(114)及答案Passage seven(Stricter Traffic Law can Prevent Accidents)From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. We are immunized from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases.A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. It is almost certain that one day remedies will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car ! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They swear, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-years-olds and utterly selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy tragic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten. It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through stringent annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can impair a p erson’s driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound inordinately harsh. But surelynothing should be considered as to severe if tit results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.1.The main idea of this passage is[A] Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.[C] The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.[D] Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.2.What does the author think of society toward motorists?[A] Society smiles on the motorists.Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.[C] Victims of accidents are nothing.[D] Society condones their rude driving.3.Why does the author say:’ his car becomes the extension of his personality?’[A] Driving can show his real self.Driving can show the other part of his personality.[C] Driving can bring out his character.[D] His car embodies his temper.4.Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents? [A] Build more highways.Stricter driving tests.[C] Test drivers every three years.[D] raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.5.The attitude of the author is[A] ironicalcritical[C] appealing[D] militantVocabulary1.immunise 使免疫,使免除2.expectation of life = life expectancy 平均寿命3.versus = against 对顶,反对4.mutilate 伤害5.wilful 任性的,固执的6.benign 宽厚的,仁慈的7.condone 宽容8.desecrate 亵渎,玷污9.code 法规,规定,惯例10.stringent 严格的,紧急的,迫切的11.performance 演出,成品,这里是指car’ s behavior such as speed, function etc.可译成行为,汽车行为、功能等。

Believe it or not, optical illusion(视错觉) can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced car crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Too great speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all serious traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related risks are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars(水平杆)painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.36. The passage mainly discusses ________.A. a new type of optical illusionB. a new pattern for painting highwaysC. a new way of training driversD. a new way of highway speed control【答案】D【解析】主旨大意题。

【2014界黑龙江省哈三中高三上第三次验收考试】ALast Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become. When I was a kid in New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine. Most stores were closed, almost nobody worked, and the highways, as a result, were not desperate steeplechases(障碍赛跑) they have become today. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek.The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly. It was the repetition to church, our reward for an hour of devotion, an opportunity to take advantage of the fact that Dad was not at work, we were not in school, and there was no housework that couldn’t wait until Monday. Sunday was, indeed, different from the other days of the week, because everyone seemed to be on the same schedule, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else.Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to find that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visiting someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to DO this Sunday?” The an swer can range from going to the mall, to participating in a road race, to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such an answer would feel strange, which sounds like an echo from another era.I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land and tight relationships. Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural feature still keeps at least remnants(残余部分) of the moral of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one anotherin the face of economic vagaries(反复无常的情况) and a challenging environment.56.The writer’s general impression o f the Sunday in the past was a day when__.A. everyone was paying a visit to some relatives far awayB. everyone seemed to be free for othersC. Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the houseD. nearly every adult would go to church and children weren’t at school57.In the fourth paragraph, the writer compares the response “I’m making a Sundayvisit to family” to an echo from another era because_____.A. people nowadays prefer staying at home on SundayB. such answers are rarely heard in our modern societyC. people in the city dislike being disturbed on SundayD. visiting someone on Sunday was routine in the past58.From the last paragraph we may infer that_____.A. people in Maine suffer more from economic depression and the changed environmentB. people in Maine have abandoned their tradition and lived an absolutely new lifeC. land in Maine is short, thus the relationship between people is tenseD. people in Maine tend to help each other out of necessity59. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Doing many activities on Sunday is beneficial.B. We should often travel a long distance to visit some friends and relatives.C. Nowadays, Sunday has almost lost its association as a day of rest.D. We should abandon some old tradition.【参考答案】56-59BBDC阅读理解-------D(2013·辽宁,C)Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the humanbrain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we could find it full of fatigue toxins(霉素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of efforts as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired? Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情感的) attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists, J. A. Hadfield, says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares,“One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.文章大意:最新的研究发现:持续的脑力劳动并不使人疲劳,真正使人疲劳的是一些精神上的消极情绪。

Here are some examples of rudeness. Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don't work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings lifechanging news, so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的) rude messages by email. However, rudeness is never acceptable. Don't assume it is OK to be rude if the person you're in touch with won't recognize you. If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it, write a letter or email and sign it, or forget it. Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting. We shouldn't blame technology for our shortcomings.Technology is here to help us,but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is acknowledging our shortcomings.People spend a lot of time pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we'd publicly acknowledge good manners when we see them.文章大意:随着高科技的发展,人的行为变得越来越粗鲁。

But recharging with a shallow (小睡) offers no such mental improvement, the research suggests. The results of the study added to the growing body of evidence that Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is very important to the brain’s ability to form strong memories. An average night's rest includes four or five spells of REM sleep, but these bursts tend to be lengthier towards the end of the night. This means adults getting less than the recommended seven to eight hours a night -- and therefore inadequate REM sleep -- may be damaging their mind's ability to memorize: Although REM sleep is not classified as a type of deep sleep, it is only reached after the brain has passed through deep sleep stages. In the recent study, participants were shown groups of three words --- such as “cookie”, “heart”, and “sixteen”----and asked to find another word that can be associated with all three words. They were tested once in the morning and then given the same task again in the afternoon. In between, some were allowed a nap with REM sleep, some a nap without REM sleep, while the others had a quiet rest period. The quiet rest and non-REM sleep groups didn't improve, but the REM sleep group improved on their morning performance by an average of almost 40 per cent.Dr Sara Mednick, a sleep researcher at the University of California who led the study, believes the formation of connections between previously unassociated information in the brain occurs during REM sleep. People woken while their closed eyes made rapid movements recalled much more colorful and detailed dreams than people woken during other stages of sleep.1. According to the passage, to have a good memory, a person had better _______ at night.A. sleep four to five hours at mostB. sleep as much as possibleC. sleep with four or five periods of REMD. have a shallow sleep 答案解析:答案为C。

定额市鞍钢阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(16)及答案阅读理解------E (2013·重庆,E)It is idely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weatherspeak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English interest is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weatherspeak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weatherspeak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weatherspeak is a means of social bonding.文章大意:本文为议论文,上来点题:英语对话往往从天气开始。

I've lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shootups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who were barred in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn't let that happen.Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.Mr. Clark was selected as Disney's 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angeles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said,“Y ou're all going.”On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn't want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestsellingbook based on his classroom rules, The Essential55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages. It was the most amazing experience of my life. 定额市鞍钢阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(4)及答案【2014陕西省商高级中学高三上二模】BIt’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is “You can’t”. Look around you. With very few exceptions (例外), either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeeded. Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources in the form of time and money so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper(成功).50. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that _______.A. mistakes are better than not tryingB. we are afraid of trying new thingsC. it’s common for people to make mistakesD. mistakes are unnecessary for developmen51. The underlined word “eliminate” means _______.A. avoidB. solveC. acceptD. dismiss52. According to the article, one thing you should pay attention to aboutmaking mistakes is _______.A. avoiding making the same mistakesB. accepting the punishment willinglyC. taking consequences into accountD. trying things out one by one53. The article is mainly about _______.A. how to deal with mistakesB. what benefits mistakes bringC. how to achieve successD. how to make use of your mistakes54. What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake?A. Never mind, I can always try again.B. I’d better stay out of trouble.C. Great! Now I can learn something.D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset.【参考答案】50-54 ADCBC阅读理解------E(2013·江西,D)One might expect that the evergrowing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the longterm future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rockbound Pacific island is advertised as the ‘last paradise (天堂) on earth’.However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of seaside holidays, overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation of precious trees and plants. Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmlandmakes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The onetime farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn't happier in his village working his own land.Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people. The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years' time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。

2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(7)及答案阅读理解-------D(2013·福建,D)Pride and Prejudice for the Modern WomanLet us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's most famous work, might be updated, 200 years on.Austen's popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here's my own suggestion...It is a truth finally and universally acknowledged that a single woman with brains deserves to have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism.“My dear husband,” said his hopeful wife one day, “have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?”Her dull and indifferent (漠不关心的) husband replied that he had not.“But it is, it is,” she replied excitedly.Mr DullHusband made no reply.“Don't you want to know her plans?” she cried with some impatience.“Well, clearly you think it matters to your silly little head. .. so I'd better listen.”“Well, my dear, the rumour (传言) is that she has already set up a string of successful businesses in northern England, though_how_a_woman_can_know_anything_about_that_is_beyond_me. She will move in herself next month.”“What is her name?”“Bingley.”“Is she married or single?”“What a question! And none of your business. B ut her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.”“How so? How can it possibly affect them?”“My dear love; those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are bound to be jobs going.”“Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she h as simply taken a fancy to the place.”“Nonsense, my love, how little you've noticed the world has changed. She's got a firstrate degree and some sort of business qualification, I'm told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.”“Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job.”“Oh, that's not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I'll go along all the same.”And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSElisted company.... It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more “female” dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the city's business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she'd no doubt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.文章大意:奥斯汀作品《傲慢与偏见》中明显地体现了对于女性性别的歧视,时至今天,性别歧视仍然存在。

I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's “Report on Guilty Secrets”,Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out ), I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten .But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984.I think it's really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more indepth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J.K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words).Fortytwo percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I'll come clean;I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).文章大意:在世界读书日的调查报告中显示有百分之四十二的人撒谎说读过某本书,通常的原因是给人留下印象。

2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(19)及答案(七)A (2013·陕西,B)In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I'd hitch a ride (搭便车).I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn't give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使…放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.Twentyfive years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favour I'd been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water. After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You ha ven't changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.”I couldn't remember where I'd met him. 2014高考英语阅读理解全程基础训练(20)及答案阅读理解----DAmerican actor Johnny Depp can best be described asunconventional. From his early life, his path into acting andeven in his choice of movie roles,we can see that Depp hasseldom taken the easy road. His willingness to take risks anddo the unexpected has made Depp one of the few Hollywood actorsable to achieve huge commercial success while maintaining hisartistic reputation.Born in 1963,Depp was somewhat troublesome as a youth,.occasionally turning to petty-crime and drugs. When hisparents divorced in 1978,Depp dropped out of school against his mother’s wishes and started a music band called the Kids. Although the band achieved some success, they were seldom able to make ends meet, with Depp often unable to pay his rent, sleeping rough on friends’ sofas and even in his car.In 1983,the ever-optimistic Depp and his new wife, Lori Anderson, moved to Hollywood California to further Depp’s musical career. But life there continued to be a struggle and Depp was forced to take a job selling pens door to door to support his new family. His luck changed when Lori’s ex-boyfriend, the famous actor Nicholas Cage, impressed by Depp’s good looks and intelligence, suggested he become an actor and helped him get a small part in a movie. Several other minor movie roles — and a divorce from Lori —followed, before Depp got his big break three years later. He landed the leading role in the television series 21 Jump Street, playing a youthful undercover police officer. The hugely popular show turned Depp into a teenage heartthrob overnight. He appeared on the cover of countless magazines and was much sought after by movie producers, eager to exploit his popularity with teenage girls. But Depp left 21 Jump Street after three years, when it was at the height of its popularity, later admitting that he hated the sho w’s unoriginal storylines and his “pretty boy” character. In the decade that followed, Depp rejected repeated offers of “pretty boy” roles in big-budget Hollywood films. Instead he established himself as a serious, somewhat dark, peculiar performer, consistently selecting roles in smaller, independent films that surprise critics and audiences alike.Even in the movie that made Depp an international superstar, The Pirates of the Caribbean (2003 ),he was barely recognizable as Captain Jack Sparrow, the British,long-haired golden-toothed pirate. This and subsequent hit movies have placed Depp at the very top of the commercial film industry ( with a pay-check of $20 million for each such movie) but he still continues to make the smaller, stranger films for which he is so greatly admired.41.As a youth, Depp could be described as a _____.A. serious criminalB. trouble makerC. drug addictD. successful musician【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。
