A Mountain of Green BeansAnother envelope in the mail. There’s my name, Alexander Spencer, typed on the front. I throw it under the bed. The piles of envelopes are growing. The envelopes were applications to all the colleges I was supposed to attend. I did open the first envelope. Then I saw the application, all those blank spaces I was supposed to fill with my own writing, spaces for my name and birth date and grade average and …statement of purpose.I looked at them for a long time. I could write for hours and not fill all those spaces. So I put the application back in the envelope. I would fill it out the next day, when I had time. But another envelope arrived. And then the pile began. The pile scares me —it is really like a monster. All the while, I feel the weight of a million envelopes raining down on my head until my grandmother calls me and wants to know how I am.“I am overcome by too many tasks,” I say.“Honey, you just take it bit by bit,”she says, and she reminds me about the green beans. When I was a little kid I hated green beans. But my mom said I couldn’t leave the table until I ate ten green beans. All alone at the table, I stared at the green beans for what seemed like hours. It was a mountain of green beans. I couldn’t do it.My grandma came to me and asked if I could eat one green bean.“But Grandma, I have to eat ten!”She said all I had to do was to eat one green bean. One tiny little green bean. So I ate one. It was bad, but not as bad as I’d thought it would be. Then she asked me again if I could eat one. So I ate one green bean nine more times. My grandma doesn’t know about the envelopes, but she tells me anyone can do one thing every day.Back in my room, I lay down on the bed. Just like I used to do when I was a little kid, I hang my head down to look at the pile of envelopes. There it is. But instead of a monster, I see a pile of green beans. Who’s afraid of green beans?1. Envelopes are piling up because the author _______.doesn’t know how to replyfeels bored of the paper workdoesn’t want to attend collegehas been too busy to open them2. What does the author learn from the story of the green beans?A. A good start is half done.B. Actions speak louder than words.C. A long journey begins with a single step.D. In my experience, freshmen today are different from those I knew when I started as a professor 25 years ago. College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college. Many of today’s students lack resilience (适应力)and at the first sign of difficulty are unable to think out strategies. The hardship can be a failing grade on a test, a cut from the team, or a romantic breakup. It is really too easy to point the finger at parents who protect their children from life’s obstacles. Parents, who handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children from writing admission e ssays to picking college courses, certainly may contribute to their children’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to the social trends of today. How many people do you know who are on medications (治疗) to prevent anxiety or depression? The number of students who arrive at college already medicated for unwanted emotions has increased dramatically in the past 10 years. We, as a society, don’t want to“feel” anything unpleasant and we certainly don’t want our children to“suffer”. The resulting problem is that by not experiencing negative emotions, one does not learn the necessary skills to tolerate and solve problems. Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political realities, but I don’t believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than the past 10 years. What I do think is that many students are often not prepared to be young “adults”with all the responsibilities of life.As parents, we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them in this direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.1. The best title of the text probably is_____A. Have College Freshmen Changed?B. What Should College Faculty and Staff Do Today?C. What Difficulty Are Freshmen Facing?D. How to Get Used to College Life for Freshmen?2. According to the text, today’s freshmen_____.A. are not good at dealing with problemsB. often fail in the examsC. can’t get along well with classmatesD. have to experience more intense college life3. Scientists in UK have grown a living human "brain". The team at Aston University created tiny bunch of cells which act like a mini nervous system. They believe it could help find a cure for worse mental conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Professor Michael Coleman is leading the research program. He explained, "We are aiming to be able to study the human brain at the most basic level, using an actual living human cell system. Cells have to be alive and operating efficiently to enable us to really understand how the brain works. "The experiment involves changing cells from a cancer tumour (肿瘤)and making them behave like brain cells.Although far from finished, researchers hope the false brain cells will give them a greater understanding of how real brains work. This, in turn, could significantly further research into conditions which affect the brain. Neil Hunt, chief leader of the research group, said, "It is still very early days, but in the future the research could lead to a useful tool for looking into dementia (痴呆)."The technique could also provide a way to carry on animal test and is being supported by the Humane Research Trust (HRT). The scientists predict that over the next ten years a million people will develop dementia. Professor Coleman believes their findings could change this. He said,"We hope our research will provide scientists with a new and highly relational human experimental model to help them understand the brain better and develop new drugs to control the related disease. However, the biggest challenge at present is that we are greatly short of fund, which will slow our research."1. UK scientists grow a living human "brain" in order to ______.A. study the structure of human brainB. make use of living human cell systemC. discover how human brain really worksD. separate cells from a cancer tumour2. According to Neil Hunt, research into brain cells ______.A. will get finished as early as possibleB. will make people discover dementiaC. will affect the brain growth in many waysD. will help to treat some diseases in nerve system3. From the last paragraph,we can know that ______A. the technique provided by HRT is immatureB. animal tests are no longer allowed by lawC. a million people suffer from brain diseasesD. the research program lacks financial support4. What makes a person a scientist?Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “NO”.It is not what the tools that a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use the power is important to a carpenter (木匠).You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate (调查),how to discover information,is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further,he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed (确认) by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time.He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions sometimes must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration (演示) must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science.Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested throughinvestigations.Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct.A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.1.What makes a scientist according to the passage?A.The tools he uses. 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

It is evident that there is a close connection between the capacity to use language and the capacities covered by the verb “to think”. Indeed, some writers have identified thinking with using words: Plato coined the saying, “In thinking the soul is talking to itself”; J. B. Watson reduced thinking to inhibited(拘谨的) speech located in the minute(微小的) movements or tensions of the physiological mechanisms involved in speaking; and although Ryle is careful to point out that there are many senses in which a person is said to think and in which words are not in evidence, he has also said that saying something in a specific frame of mind is thinking a thought. Is thinking reducible to, or dependent upon, language habits? It would seem that many thinking situations are hardly distinguishable from the skillful use of language, although there are some others in which language is not involved. Thought cannot be simply identified with using language. It may be the case, of course, that the non-linguistic skills involved in thought can only be acquired and developed if the learner is able to use and understand language. However, this question is one which we cannot hope to answer in this book. Obviously being able to use language makes for a considerable development in all one’s capacities but how precisely this comes about we cannot say.At the common-sense level it appears that there is often a distinction between thought and the words we employ to communicate with other people. We often have to struggle hard to find words to capture what our thinking has already grasped, and when we do find words we sometimes feel that they fail to do their job properly. Again when we report or describe our thinking to other people we do not merely report unspoken words and sentences. Such sentences do not always occur in thinking, and when they do they are merged with vague imagery and the hint of unconscious or subliminal(潜意识) activities going on just out of rage. Thinking, as it happens, is more like struggling, striving, or searching for something than it is like talking or reading.Again the study of speech disorders due to brain injury disease suggests that patients can think without having adequate control over their language. Some patients, for example, fail to find the names of objects presented to them and are unable to describe simple events which they witness; they even find it difficult to interpret long written notices. But they succeed in playing games of chess or draughts. They can use the concepts needed for chess playing or draught playing but are unable to use many of the concepts in ordinary language. How they manage to do thiswe do not know. Presumably human beings have various capacities for thinking situations which are likewise independent of language.1、According to the theory of "thought" devised by J. B. Watson, thinking is_______.A. talking to the soulB. concealed speechC. speaking nonverballyD. a non-linguistic behavior2、What does the author think about the relationship between language and thinking?A. The ability to use language enhances one’s capacity of thinking.B. Words and thinking match more often than not.C. Thinking never goes without language.D. Language and thinking are generally distinguishable.3、According to the author, when we intend to describe our thoughts, we______.A. merely report internal speechB. have to search for proper words in the way we readC. are overwhelmed with vague imageryD. sometimes are not able to find appropriate words4、Why are patients with speech disorders able to think without having adequate control of language?A. They use different concepts.B. They do not think linguistically.C. It still remains an unsolved mystery.D. Thinking is independent of language.【参考答案】1—4、BADC阅读理解。

语鹅市安置阳光实验学校2015西安市高考英语【四月】阅读理解、完形填空选练(10)答案阅读理解English as a Foreign LanguageWho taught you to speak English? Yourparents, while you were a young child? Yourteachers at school? Perhaps even the BBCas a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow youhave developed an understanding of what israpidly becoming a truly global language. There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangersof“mono-culturalism”, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary, I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India(where many of them speak at least some English)and Pakistan(the same situation with India). . .If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald’s burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), will it kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well. When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose, ”he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of rose? ”Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.【文章大意】作者以独特的视角分析了英语的发展前景和人们的种种顾虑。

The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produceeco-friendly tentsmade of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the City’s private companies w hich fund new businesses and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directors and won their support. Mint has committed around£500,000 to MyHab and taken a share of 30 per cent in Mr Dunlop’s business. The fir st Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.Mr Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics. For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team before the festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards. They can be personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior(外部的) advertising space. The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonbury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. “Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品质)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confidence American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don’t mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What’s worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.Being confidence for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their Speeches.(The course I’m teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won’t be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.1.To compete with American students it’s very important to .A.be quite confident B.be polite and friendlyC.have more discussions with them D.understand what they think about2.A professor will have the worst opinion of a student who .A.gives a silly or simple answerB.tries to seize any chance to speak in classC.shows no interest in the courseD.is considered to have no opinion of his own3.The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if .A.he asks a student to repeat what he has saidB.the students bargain with himC.he pretends to know what he doesn’tD.he has to give a speech4.We learn from the second paragraph that .A.we should also remain modest in AmericaB.modesty doesn’t help you much in AmericaC.Americans also like modest peopleD.modesty can help you through an American graduate program5.The passage is mainly developed by .A.providing examplesB.making comparisonsC.giving different figuresD.telling personal experiences【参考答案】1---5、ADCBD【阅读理解】Arthur Miller(1915-2005)is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller's father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary, drawn like so many others by the“Great American Dream”. However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.Miller's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American sys tem, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and i n the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment: if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end. When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.本文讲述了亚瑟·米勒,美国著名的剧作家,以及他的著名的戏剧《男售货员之死》,当这部戏剧第一次搬上舞台时,赢得了巨大的成功,获得了三项大奖。

Our body clock,or natural body rhythm, influences our energy and alertness.Paying attention to it can help us choose the suitable time of day when we best perform specific tasks. The reality, however,is that most of us organize their time around work demands, school deadlines, commuting or social events.Doing whatever your body feels like doing is a luxury in today's fast-paced modem society. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying.Obeying our body clock has significant health benefits.Disrupting our natural body rhythm,on the other hand, has been linked to problems such as depression, obesity,or headache, says Steve Key,a biology professor. When the body clock can synchronize(使……同步)the rhythms of its natural processes,it “gives us an advantage in daily life”,says Key.According to him, when it comes to cognitive(认知的)work, most adults perform best in the late morning. As our body temperature starts to rise just before awakening in the morning and continues to increase until midday, our memory, alertness and concentration gradually improve. However,he adds, our ability to concentrate typically starts to decrease soon thereafter. Most of us are more easily distracted(分心)between noon and 4 pm.Alertness also tends to fall after eating a meal and sleepiness tends to peak around 2 pm,making that a good time for a nap.Surprisingly, tiredness may increase our creative powers. For most adults, problems that requireopen ended thinking are often best dealt with in the evening when they are tired, according to a study in the journal Thinking & Reasoning. When choosing a time of day to exercise, paying attention to your body clock can improve results.Physical performance is usually best from about 3 to 6 pm,says Michael Smolensky,a professor of biomedical engineering.Of course, not everyone's body clock is the same, making it even harder to synchronize natural rhythms with daily plans.1.If we know our natural body rhythm well, we can .A.find out the suitable time to do specific tasksB.organize our time around work demandsC.do whatever our body feels like doingD.be sure to be healthy2.Which of the following is NOT true?A.Our alertness is influenced by our natural body rhythmB.Doing whatever your body feels like is very difficult in our modem society.C.Obeying our body clock is good for our health.D.Disrupting our natural body rhythm can lead to obesity.3.According to Steve Key,which of the following is NOT true?A.When our body clock synchronizes the rhythms of its natural processes,we can do better.B.When it comes to cognitive(认知的)work, most people perform best in the late morning.C.As body temperature rises before awakening in the morning, our concentration gradually improves.D.We concentrate better in the late morning than between noon and 4 pm.4.Inspiration(灵感)to solve a difficult problem will most probably come to us .A.when we get up in the morningB.when we are tired in the eveningC.when we are full of energy in the late morningD.when we are asleep at night5.Which of the following can be the suitable title for the passage?A.What is natural body rhythm?B.Natural body rhythm is good for us.C.Something about natural body rhythm.D.The latest research about natural body rhythm.【参考答案】1---5 ADBBC阅读理解。

An animal that is aware (意识) of itself has a high level of intelligence. Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image (反射出的影像). Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves. Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test.“We thought that elephants were the next important animal,”said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B. M. de Waal of Emory University. With their large brains,Reiss said, elephants “seemed like cousins to apes and dolphins.”The researchers tested Happy. Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They put an 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror. The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it,and to examine parts of their bodies.Of the three, Happy then passed the test,in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.Diana Reiss said,“We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way.”文章通过实验说明能意识到自身形象的动物具有高智商。

If freshmen become more mature to face and solve problems, they should______.A. experience negative emotions themselvesB. ask parents, teachers and coaches for more helpC. receive medications to prevent anxiety or depressionD. put their hearts and soul into the study4. How is it that siblings (兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows upin a different family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father. Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later childr en aren’t getting the same one- on- one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later- borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I〞and “me〞.A CambridgeUniversity study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love- hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs. One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being morefeminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.1. The underlined part “in a different family〞(in Para. 1) means" ______".A. in a different family environmentB. in a different family traditionC. in different family crisesD. in different families2. In terms of language development, later- borns_______ .A. get their parents’individual guidanceB. learn a lot from their elder siblingsC. experience a lot of difficultiesD. pick up words more quickly3. What was found about fights among siblings?A. Siblings hated fighting and loved playing.B. Siblings in some families fought frequently.C. Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships.D.
