I was sitting in a chemistry class when I and six other kids were called down to the counselor’s (顾问) office. It was pretty strange because none of us were “ problem ” students. We were all curious about what she wanted to say. This was when she told us she would be choosing one of us to be nominated (提名) for the largest scholarship in Canada. It was a very strange moment; I never realized I was that excellent. In life, once on a path, we tend to follow it, for better or worse. What’s sad is that even if it’s the latter, we often follow a certain path anyway because we are used to the way things are that we don’t even recognize that they could be different. Psychologists call this phenomenon functional fixedness. This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works — and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap:People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it burns properly. Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax (石蜡). The tacks are too short, and the candle doesn’t fasten to the wall. So how can you accomplish the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall, and stand the candle inside it.To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a container just for tacks and reimagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer — to one degree or another — from functional fixedness. The inabilityto think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arend coined the phrase frozen thoughts to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt’s eyes, the complacent reliance on such accepted “truths” also made people blind to ideas that didn’t fit their worldview, even when there was ample evidence for them. Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said, “It can be found in highly intelligent people.”Another context in which frozen thinking can turn truly dangerous is medicine. If you land in the hospital, it’s natural to want to be treated by the most experienced physicians on staff. But according to a 2014 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), you’d be better off being treated by the relative novices.1.What does “functional fixedness” mean?2.How is the candle attached to the wall?3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.Frozen thinking is common among ordinary people as well as those with high although frozen thinking has much to do with intelligence.4.How can you avoid frozen thoughts in your daily life?
Air is important for everyone, we live depending on it. But what if it is polluted? Air pollution is a killer. The World Health Organization says it kills about seven million people around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill us, it can make us very sick. It may do more than hurt your body. Breathing dirty air can also influence your brain and your ability to think. It is true whether you believe or not.A new study shows that air pollution can influence our intelligence (智力) — cause a “huge” reduction in our intelligence. The study was carried out by researchers at Peking University and Yale University. Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health led the study. The study performed for a long period. The researchers studied about 25,000 people from across China. The youngest people in the study were 10 years old, while the oldest was 90. They came from 25 of China’s 34 provinces (省) with different air levels. These Chinese men, women and children were given language and math tests during the study. Then researchers compared the test results with levels of pollution in the air. They found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person’s education level by about one year.Xi Chen told that there are two main parts in the brain—white matter and gray matter. He said, “Air pollution has a great effect on the white matter, and white matter is more connected with a person’s language skills. So, that’s why language skills are more affected.” He also noted other studies have shown, “However gray matter is connected to our ability to solve math problems.”Chen suggests government to make serious changes. “We need to support in cleaning up the sky instead of using in short-term avoidance, for example the face masks or air filters (过滤).”1.What can influence your brain and your ability to think?________________________________________________2.Where was the new study carried out?________________________________________________3.How many people did the researchers study from across China?________________________________________________4.Why are language skills more affected than math?________________________________________________5.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?________________________________________________二、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly with our eyes, sop it is often said that eyes can speak.Do you have such a kind of experience? In a bus you may loom at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you may look at yourself up and down, to see if there is .If nothing goes wrong, you will fell angry towards others' stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is ,he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her. However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is saying, to tell him that he is attentive. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the honest communication, Quite the contrary. In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words can't express.Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.76.What is the best title of the passage?(no more than 6 words)77.Please fill in the blank in Paragraph3 with proper words or phrase to complete the sentence.(no more than 10 words)78.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?It may be bad manners to stare at someone.79.What will you do if your classmates listen to your speaking, according to the passage?(no more than 30 words)80.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter. Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination. When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. So finally I made the journey.” MacDonald started her journey in Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott, and headed inland where she and her team jumped on the world’s longest cargo train (货运列车) for a 435-mile journey on the Mauritania Railway. “The train was dirty and uncomfortable but it was such an interesting and unique way to travel through the vast desert by train,” said MacDonald.MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travelers also had to deal with the intense heat, violent winds and even dangerous sandstorms. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”She dealt with the harsh (恶劣的) conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, works at nursing homes in northwest Arkansas, and Ruby Kate often goes with her in the summer. “I’ve never found them scary at all, so I’m able to just go up to them and ask if they need anything,” she says.Last May, Ruby Kate noticed a resident named Pearl staring out a window. She seemed sad. “What are you looking at?” Ruby Kate asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner after a visit. Pearl didn’t know when she would see her dog again.Ruby Kate and Amanda asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn’t allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after hers. The Chitseys also learned that many nursing home residents are unable to afford even the smallest luxuries. So Ruby Kate decided to do something about it.She started by asking residents what three things they wanted most in the world. “That’s a lot simpler than going, ‘Hey, what do you want?’” she explains. “They can understand you better.” Amanda worried that people would ask for cars and other things an 11-year-old wouldn’t be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, pants that fit properly, and even just a prayer.“It broke me as a human,” Amanda says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many items as we could.” Using their own money, the Chitseys granted the wishes of about 100 people in three months. Then they started asking for donations, set up a GoFundMe page, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents, and raised more than $250,000 in five months. One of their new goals is to set up a communal laptop in one nursing home in each state.Ruby Kate doesn’t plan to stop there. “Iconsider kindness to be my hobby,” she says, “and I’m very good at it.”1.What makes Ruby Kate have a close relationship with older people? As a lawyer, I specialized in corporate law in oil and gas projects. Actually, I’d grown to hate my job. It involved too much paperwork and a lot of traveling, which was really exhausting for me.Becoming a lawyer was unintended. I loved my school but it was competitive and students were destined for a good university, and then a graduate plan. That was the track I was on. After graduation, I became a lawyer, but that just made me trapped. I wanted to make a difference, but I had no idea what else I could do.On that life-changing flight, I asked a stewardess to bring me a hot drink. When she returned, I couldn’t help crying. Hugging me, she said, “I don’t know what’s wrong but if you’re crying in business class, you need to change your life.”Those words had a great effect on me. I couldn’t carry on in a job that made me so uncomfortable. After much reflection, I resigned 18 months later. The last time I’d been happy was when I was volunteering at a school. Because of that, my friend Sophia kept telling me I’d love teaching. Then I contacted four schools and became a teacher in the end. No amount of planning would have prepared me for my first day as a teacher. It was stressful, but as I became familiar with thecurriculum, I relaxed.Five years on, I’m head of department. Watching my students develop is so rewarding and results day makes me burst with pride. I used to feel scared about the thought of becoming a more senior lawyer, but I’m so positive about the opportunities teaching can offer. I earn less now but I become richer in many ways.Every single day, I feel excited to go to work.1.Why did the author hate her job as a lawyer? (no more than 15 words)2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 3 words)3.What made the author decide to become a teacher? (no more than 10 words)4.How does the author’s life change after being a teacher? (no more than 10 words)5.What kind of job will you choose after graduation? Please explain. But Jamal Hinton, who was a 17-year-old high school student and complete stranger to Dench at the time, received the text instead.Once the two Arizona natives realized the mistake, Hinton asked if he could “still get a plate,” according to screenshots he posted on Twitter. Dench replied, “Of course, you can. That’s what grandmas do...feed everyone.”Hinton shared the sweet conversation on social media and the story quickly went viral (疯传). They have celebrated Thanksgiving together every year since, always snapping photos and taking videos, much to the delight of many following their story. This year, a very important person is missing from the annual tradition — Dench’s husband, Lonnie. He died from the coronavirus this spring. Wanda was able to be with him during his final moments.Dench and Hinton thought about the risks of holding a Thanksgiving celebration amid the pandemic (疫情期间), weighing if they could figure out a way to get together the day before gathering with their own individual families. But, they eventually concluded the risk was too high.In honor of Lonnie, the friends instead held a small gathering on Friday. Dench, her actual grandson, her daughter, Hinton and his girlfriend, Mikaela, got together for an early Thanksgiving meal. The event was a sharp contrast from the larger celebrations of years past.“I didn’t want to miss Thanksgiving with Jamal,” Dench said. “This year is definitely different than all the years in the past.”To honor Lonnie, an empty seat and lit candle were placed at the head of the table. The beloved husband would always say grace before the holiday meal, so this year, Dench led the prayer.“Thank you for all the blessings, and thank you so much for having Lonnie in my life,” Dench said as everyone sat around the table. “I miss him, but I know he’s in a good place. After the two-year course, he decided to study traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.Since TCM is also related to Chinese history and culture, students have to study ancient Chinese literature as most of the medical texts were written in ancient Chinese characters. “That’s a subject even the Chinese find difficult; so think of me, a foreigner!” he said. What inspired him to continue were the similarities between TCM and traditional African medicine, such as using certain herbs to treat the same diseases and letting out blood. However, the greatest challenge for him was to convince people that even though he was a foreigner, he could still treat them effectively with TCM.In 1997, he became the first foreigner to receive a doctoral (博士的) degree in acupuncture (针灸) from Chengdu University of TCM.Besides his work in a private hospital, Boubacar has also been helping patients in remote villages in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. A major part of his work was treating leprosy (麻风病) patients.Due to his work in the community, Boubacar is also known as the “African Norman Bethune”. Bethune was a Canadian frontline doctor who ran mobile hospitals in north China in the 1930s.“I want to build not only a hospital but also an educational center where people can come and learn about Chinese medicine,” he said. 阅读回答问题When kids pretend (扮演) they’re princesses or super heroes, or create their own characters using dolls or Lego figures, it seems like they’re playing simple games. But what’s going on when kids use their imaginations and pretend when they play is actually very complex, and very good for kids’ development. The power of kids’ imaginations is a fantastic thing. All they need is some time, space, and your encouragement, and they can be anything and go anywhere, just by pretending. They make up stories and adventures and create whole worlds without even thinking about it—this is creativity in its purest (纯粹的) form.Pretend play allows kids to think about what they experience in the world around them and re-create social relationships through play. Kids make sense of the world and copy the social interactions they see around them through imaginative play with friends, siblings, parents, and even stuffed animals. Kids will share with a teddy bear, give them a check-up, praise them for sharing, or make them some tea at a tea party. It’s not only adorable, but it’s a great way for kids to put into practice the interpersonal skills. It encourages cooperation (合作) and problem solving. If your children and their friends want to be the same princess when they play, they may decide to take turns. Or your children may learn to play a game their older brother wants to play in exchange for a promise that they’ll play their game the next time. When putting the suggestions below into practice, it can help to encourage pretend play.Let kids play alone. When kids play alone, they can create their own games and let their imaginations lead them.Let them lead. When you pretend-play with kids, try not to guide them. If they ask you for help or for ideas, you can suggest prompts (提示). But as a general rule, let your child take the lead and figure out what and how you’ll play.Encourage them when they don’t follow instructions and use toys in new and creative ways. Sure, it’s fun to build the truck or building according to the instruction manual that comes with the Lego. But it’s great when kids decide to mix and match parts from different sets to create their own designs. Let your child know you love their creations and ideas.1.Do kids use their imaginations when they are doing pretend play?______________________________________________________________2.What do they need to be anything and go anywhere?______________________________________________________________3.If your child and their friend want to be the same princess when they play, what will they do? ______________________________________________________________4.What does the passage mainly talk about?______________________________________________________________Two Words that Changed Many LivesOften when we’re going through a hard time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice and understand is enough to make us feel loved and supported. Sherry was once upset and disappointed while working on a hard job. Then her boss gave her a card. The card with just two little words was what made her realize she wasn’t alone. The two words? You Matter.Sherry said she almost cried when she read the message. “I’ve fought at times with my own self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carried around with me had been answered—I matter.”Sherry was so touched that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away.“I met a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When I asked her how she was doing, the woman said, ‘Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.’ My heart ached, I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Then I remembered something in my hag that might help her.’ It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’d like to give you something.” And I handed her a “You Matter” card. When she read it, she began to cry.” You have no idea how much this means to me, “she said thankfully.”“Without that card, I wouldn’t have gone up to that woman and said anything,” she says. Sherry thought the experience was so powerful that she decided to send sets of 30 “You Matter” cards free to anyone who signed up online as long as the person promised to give the cards away. She called the event the “You Matter Marathon(马拉松)” because the cards can pass on people’s kindness and care about each other. The idea was more successful than she’d expected and the cards have changed many people’s lives. In class those students who surf the Internet understandlessons better than the others. Besides, people can use the Internet to write letters or stories and sendemails. Many students communicate with their friends online. You can also make friends by chatting onQQ. It is cheaper than calling somebody far away and it's also much quicker. Nearly one third of youngpeople surf the Internet for fun. They like to listen to music, watch films, and go to their favouritestars' websites. But can the Internet cause problems? Some of my students who used to study well atschool are now failing exams. Because they spend a lot of time playing computer games.1. Surfing the Internet can help open students' eyes, can't it? (no more than seven words)2. What's the writer? (no more than seven words)3. How can you make friends on the Internet? (no more than seven words)4. How many young people surf the Internet for fun? (no more than seven words)5. What do you think of surfing the Internet? How do we know what's right or wrong in English? Languages such as French and Spanish each has an official(官方的)organization that tells you what's correct. But there is nothing like that in English. So what can we do?There is, of course, Standard English. This is the kind of English you read in newspapers or informal letters. It is also the English you learn at school or in textbooks. However, Standard English is not official English. And unbelievably, linguists(语言学家)think Standard English is on the same level as all other types of English such as Cockney English,Yorkshire English, South African English, Australian English, Singaporean English... And according tolinguists, there is no such thing as Standard Spoken English.English is changing all the time. Every year, new words appear and others disappear. Wordschange too. For example, for many years, the Latin word "agendum" was the accepted singular formand "agenda" was the plural form. However, these days, very few people use the Latin-sounding"agendum",with "agenda" being the accepted singular form, and "agendas" the plural.Newspapers each has their own style when they write certain things. For example, The Guardian puts dates like "21 July 2021" (with the day first, followed by the month and no commas). However, the news agency Reuters writes them like this "July 21,2021" (with the month first, and a comma(逗号)between the day and the year). Other newspapers have different ways of doing it too. So,as you can see, there's no one "correct" way-there's a variety of ways and eachone is acceptable.Next time someone tells you that something is wrong, tell them that it isn't wrong, it is justEnglish.1. According to passage two, how many ways can you read or learn Standard English(no morethan four words)2. What is the plural form of the Latin word "agendum" in the past?(no more than four words)3. How does the news agency Reuters write "2016年1月20日"?( no more than four words)4. According to passage one, what languages have official organizations that tell you what iscorrect?(no more than four words)5. What should you do when you face the changes of English? Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spokenlanguage. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that theymight never speak aloud. It is possible to read others around us, even if they do not want us to catchtheir unspoken communication. Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actionsare common. The most common facial expression is, of course, thesmile-its function is to show happiness and put people atease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however.Smilesaround the world can be false, hiding otherfeelingslike anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such aswhen someone loses face and smiles to hide it. However, the general purpose of smiling is to show goodfeelings. From the time we are babies, we show unhappiness or anger by frowning(皱眉头).In most places around the world, frowning and turning one's back to someone shows anger. Making a fist(拳头)and shaking it almost always means that someone is angry. How about showing that I am bored? Looking away from people or yawning will,in most cases, make me appear to be uninterested. However, if I turn toward and look at someone or something, people from almost every culture will think that I am interested.Being respectful to people is subjective, based on each culture, but in general it is probably not agood idea to give a hug to boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a higher rank(等级).Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen. With so many cultural differences between people, it is great to have some similarities in bodylanguage. We can often be wrong about each other, so it is an amazing thing that we understand eachother as well as we do !1. What is even more powerful than spoken language according to the passage? (no more than four words)2. What is the most common facial expression? (no more than four words)3. How do babies normally show their anger? (no more than four words)4. What is not good to do when you stay with someone of a higher rank? (no more than 13 words)5. What does the writer mainly want to tell us? (no more than 14 words)从失败走向成功Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to face thefailure(失败).In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail. Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as "perfect" even though it doesn't stand still. The other way is to blame(责怪)others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid. There's a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don't meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it.(Each answer should be no more than 6 words)1. What can failure become in fact?2. How many ways do most parents choose to prevent failure and protect their children?3. How do 60% of the parents prevent failure or protect their children4. What should young people be allowed to experience?5. What should you do when you face the failure?水稻People all over the world eat rice. Millions of people in Asia,Africa, and South America eat it every day of their lives. SomePeopleeat almost nothing but rice.Rice is a kind of grass. There are more than 7,000 kinds ofrice. Rice is grown in many countries, even in the southern part ofthe UnitedStates and in eastern Australia. No one really knows where rice came from. Some scientiststhink that it started to be planted in two places. They think that onekind of rice was planted in southern Asia thousands of years ago.Someone in China wrote about it almost 5,000 years ago. Another kind wasprobably grown in West Africa. Other scientists think that rice came from India, and Indian travellers took it to other parts of the world. There are two main ways to grow rice. Upland rice grows in dry soil. Most rice is planted in wet soil. People in many countries do all of the work of growing rice by hand. This is the same way farmers worked hundreds of years ago. In some countries, people now use machines on their rice farms. The farmers all use fertilizer. Some insects are enemies of rice. Farmers poison them.People use every part of the rice plant. They make animal feed and rice oil from it. They also make baskets, brooms, roofs and others for their houses. They burn dry rice plants in fires for cooking.(Each answer should be no more than 9 words)1. In what countries is rice an important food?2. How many kinds of rice are there in the world?3. When was rice grown in southern Asia?4. How do rice farmers kill insects?5. Why do people say rice is important? Adam Bruan set up the organization(组织)Pencils of Promise in 2021. Its goal is to make sure all children have a chance for education. Six years later, the non-profit organization is building a new school somewhere every 90 hours. It has helped more than 22,000 children in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It all started when Adam Bruan was a college student. He was visiting India when a boy stopped him and asked for money on the street. The healthy rice was not grown by farmers but by the students from a small primary school of only about fifty people. The idea of growing rice came from the school teachers. When making teaching plans, the teachers decided to teach students how to grow healthy rice on school land. They wanted the students to get closer to the land when doing the rice farming outside the classroom. What's better, the school made money from selling the rice and giving farming classes to the public. With the money, the school could help the students who wished to go to foreign countries some day. Today the dream is becoming real—the students are flying to Japan to share their special farming experiences, and have fun over there, of course!
