The idea was to take a year to retrace one of the epic movements of modern military history. The two British men in their mid-30s were working as editors in Beijing when they decided to reexperience the tales of the original marches. “We hold these people in such respect,” McEwen says. They plan to keep diaries but will not share the contents during the trip. “When we get to the end we’ll put our heads together and try and come up with a book,” Jocelyn said.Their trip has had some auspicious beginning, they have already met two Long March veterans(老战士) in less than a month of travel. In this modern version, the pair are aided by high-tech equipment including a satellite phone, mini-computer, video camera and solar panels to recharge batteries. It provides a variety of entertainment, sports of every kind and cultural facilities, all setin a position of outstanding natural beauty. There are camping sites, too, and hundreds of houses displaying“B & B”signs. As well as a number of small quiet bays, which are ideal for beach barbecues away from the crowds, Torquay has large sandy beaches where you can buy refreshments(饮料)and hire deck chairs, boats and even beach huts. There are large areas of grassland overlooking the sea, and miles of winding cliff paths for walkers who just want to enjoy the scenery and what is often said to be the healthiest air in the country. For the children, there is a beautiful model village with a complicated railway layout which is remarkably realistic-especially when the lights are all on at night.Of course, there’s no need to spen d your whole holidays in Torquay. Only a short drive away is Dartmoor National Park, where you can walk for miles through dramatic, unspoiled countryside, or picnic by beautiful rivers and streams. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while— then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted. In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, or enjoy their lives without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation(义务). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality(好客)becau se you can’t give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily.Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full and warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain at home, offering what is felt as only home—cooked food, not “ doing something for your guest”. It is felt that restaurant e ntertaining, shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes. In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you are being shown inferior treatment.Don’t feel neglected if you do not find f lowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there; hotel delivery is uncertain; arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled —— so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands; the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.48. In the United States, you will find friendships ______ if circumstances change.A. die suddenlyB. pass awayC. disappear graduallyD. last forever49. Americans _____ their foreign friends to make a return for their hospitality.A. askB. don’t expectC. never allowD. wish50. In some other countries, giving a dinner party at home is considered ______ than in a restaurant.A. less friendlyB. less hospitableC. more naturalD. more popular51. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Flowers are signs of outward welcome.B. Flowers are expensive.C. Flowers are available at all time.D. Flowers are not necessarily sent to guests.DClarissa looked out of the taxi window at the wet road. It was still raining.

AAs a Fulbright(富布莱特法案基金)scholar at Yale, I wanted very much to get some individual help from some famous professors, but their office-hours were only once a week and there were always students waiting outside. At first, I was too polite to get their help. Then I realized that Chinese politeness does not work in this society. I needed to be aggressive to get what I wanted. I also noticed that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.I was impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguistic feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal verbs-far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said: “this is my personal opinion and it could be wrong. It would be a good idea if you could read the book I mentioned the other day.” Or,“You may find the book I recommended helpful.” Or,“You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.”When making comments on students’ performances, the professor usually said:” It might have been much clearer if you had taken in some of the ideas we discussed earlier this semester.”In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct directions. Therefore students always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how annoyed they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than those of American students. Once the Chinese students gotthe answer, they were sure about it. That is why they make far more certain statement than American students. That is why Chinese students find it difficult to use modal verbs because the function of modal verbs is to provide room for negotiation and different ideas.1. The American professors use many modal verbs because they want to______.A. argue with their studentsB. be more sure about their answersC. express their ideas more clearlyD. develop their students’ own way of thinking2. Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s idea?A. Chinese professors can always give correct answer to the question.B. American professors are not responsible since they don’t give students answers.C. American education produces aggressive students.D. Education in China is not helpful in developing students’ creativity.3. Which of the following methods did the author mainly employ in developing the article?A. Comparison and contrast.B. Cause and effect.C. Giving examples.D. Description.4. What is the author’s attitude towards education in U.S.?A. PositiveB. NegativeC. NeutralD. UnsureBSo long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for what only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does not make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching will aid the child in knowledge. Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.5. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that____.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. students spend endless hours in readingC. reading tasks are assigned with little guidanceD. too much time is spent in teaching of reading6. The word "scrutiny"(Para.3)most probably means____.A. inquiryB. observationC. controlD. suspect7. The main idea of the passage is that ____.A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possibleC. reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD. reading is more complicated than generally believedCBeing sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all help, but the biggest longevity (长寿) seems to come from marriage. The effect was first noticed in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than the married people. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s. The effect can be seen in all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.Even if the chances are all against you, marriage can more than compensate you. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Similarly, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a flip side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their husband or wife’s death, and caring for your husband or wife with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the chances favor marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complicated, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms(生理机制). For example, social contact can promote development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The overall social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: "People are inter-connected, so their health is inter-connected."8. It can be inferred from the context that the "flip side" (Para. 2) refers to _________A. the disadvantages of being married.B. the emotional problems arising from marriage.C. the responsibility of taking care of one's family.D. the consequence of a broken marriage.9. What does the author say about social networks?A. They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B. They help develop people's community spirit.C. They provide timely support for those in need.D. They help relieve people of their life's burdens.10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It's important that we develop a social network when young.B. To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.C. Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.D. We should share our social networks with each other.第二节阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AKS5UKS5U]Arthur Miller(1915—2005)is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Miller`s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream” However, he experience d severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.Miller's most famous play,Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment : if he can’t do t he work, then he is no good tohis employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go.Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success。

AWe’re a nation —a globe, in fact —obsessed with our hair. Analysts estimate th e global hair product industry to be worth €22.6 billion, growing at a rate of up to seven percent a year. There seems to be no limit on what we’ll spend to avoid a bad hair day. But for devotees of an underground beauty movement, the secret lies in throwing away the shampoo, in fact all the hair products, for good. The “no-poo” method, which involves using natural substitutes or just water in place of shampoo and conditioner, is supported by several circles.Beauty insiders, including writers for women’s m agazines and professional hairdressers, speak highly of how hair becomes thicker, fuller, softer and brighter. And environmentalists who are mindful of money feel great joy at the lack of chemicals in and on their bodies—not to mention the impact on their budgets. Now one devotee is hoping to take it mainstream. Lucy Aitken Read, whose book Happy Hair: The definitive guide to giving up shampoo was released last week, hasn’t used shampoo for two years and her glowing brown hair is visibly in perfect condition. For her, the motivation came after reading a study that claimed women put 515 chemicals on their bodies daily. “I initially thought ‘Ha! They didn’t research me!’,” Aitken Read says. “Then I looked at the back of my shampoo bottle and realized there wer e loads of chemical components I didn’t recognize in the slightest.”Strangely it’s oily hair that could benefit the most from giving up shampoo. The theory behind the “no-poo” method is that shampoo removes the hair from its natural oils, which causes the scalp (头皮) to generate more oils to replace them. This results in oil overload — oily hair—which we then attempt to “fix” with more shampoo. It’s a vicious (恶性的) circle and quite a brilliant success for the shampoo industry, because the more shampoo you use, the more you need to use and the more frequently you need to use it.Left to its own devices or washed with natural substitutes, the scalp eventually theoretically returns to its natural balance. The result should be healthier hair that is stronger, thicker and fuller as it is less damaged than shampooed hair.1. What can we know from the first paragraph?A. More and more people produce hair products.B. More and more people waste money on their hair.C. More and more hair products are wasted every year.D. More and more hair products are produced every year.2. Even those who describe themselves as color-blind are normally just color lack. A strongly color-blind person will still be able to tell 20 different colors, compared to the 100 or so that normal-sighted people see.Pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific, is a beautiful spot but one that has a genetic trouble. It is known as Color Blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only see in black and white. Not being able to see in color is bad enough. But one islander, Herrol, who’s a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image. “I find it difficult to go outside in the sun,” he says, “because when it’s sunny I cannot see to do my work. ”But if being truly color-blind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap lire in a totally black and white world?Well, we know that in 1780 the population of Pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami. As few as 20 people survived, one of whom was the king. It’s believed he had a genetic fault that causes color-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations. There is one advantage. Herrol can see well, really well, in the dark. So when it gets dark, Herro1 and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames. “This type of fishing is fun,” Herrol says, “especially if we catch plenty. So even though it’s hard work we enjoy it.”5. What is Pingelap famous as?A. A tiny island.B. A color-blind islandC. A mentally troubled island.D. A beautiful island.6. What can we infer about Herrol?A. He may stay at home when it’s sunny.B. He is interested in burnt-out images.C. He likes taking photos very much.D. He doesn’t live in Pingelap any more.7. What would be the best title for the text?A. The history of PingelapB. The disadvantage of HerrolC. The island of color blindnessD. The advantage of color blindnessCMost of us don’t remember our first two or three years of life. But our earliest experiences may stick with us for years and continue to influence us well into adulthood.A study, published in Child Development, found that the type of emotional support that a child receives during the first three and a half years has an effect on education, social life and romantic relationships even 20 or 30 years later.Babies raised in supportive and caring home environments tended to do better on tests later on, and they were more likely to get higher degrees as adults. They were also more likely to get along with their classmates and feel satisfied in their romantic relationships.“It seems like, at least in these early years, the parents’ role is to communicate with the children and let them know, ‘I’m here for you when you’re upset, when you need me. And when you don’t need me, I’m your cheerleader,’” says Lee Raby, a psychologist and researcher at the University of Delaware who led the study.Raby used data collected from 243 people who participated in the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk. All the participants were followed from birth until they turned 32. “Researchers went into these kids’ home at times. Other times, they brought the children and their parents to the university and observed how they communicated with each other,” says Raby.Of course, parental behavior in the early years is just one of many influences, and it’s not necessarily causing the benefits seen in the study. While summarizing the results, the researchers accounted for the participants’ s ocial status and the environment in which they grew up.Finally, they found that about 10 percent of someone’s academic achievement was connected with the quality of their home life at three. Later experiences, genetic factors and even luck explain the other 90 percent.8. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ________.A. individual experiencesB. child developmentC. human relationsD. educational background9. What can we learn about people who have had bad childhood experiences from the text?A. They don’t remember their younger days at all when growing up.B. They long for emotional support to do better at school.C. They can’t recover from separating from their parents.D. They are still affected by their earliest experiences even decades later.10. Researchers collected data mainly by ______.A. photographing the participants’ daily livesB. communicating with the participants’ parentsC. observing the participants’ behaviorD. summarizing the participan ts’ position第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.5. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?A. Although our "act" would last only for a short time, we could see quite a number of interesting things. We all stood at the far end of the studio as workmen prepared the scene, setting up trees at the edge of a winding path.Very soon, bright lights were turned on and the big movie-camera waswheeled into position. The director shouted something to the camera operator and then went to speak to the two famous actors nearby. Since it was hot in the studio, it came as a surprise to us to see one of the actors put on a heavy overcoat and start walking along the path. A big fan began blowing tiny white feathers down on him, and soon the trees were covered in "snow". Two more fans were turned on, and a "strong wind" blew through the trees. The picture looked so real that it made us feel cold. The next scene was a complete contrast(对比).The way it was filmed was quite unusual. Pictures taken on an island in the Pacific were shown on a glass screen. An actor and actress stood in front of the scene so that they looked as if they were at the water's edge on an island. By a simple trick like this, palm trees, sandy beaches, and blue, clear skies had been brought into the studio!Since it was our turn next, we were left wondering what scene would be prepared for us. For a full three minutes in our lives we would be experiencing the excitement of being film ”Stars”!9. Who is the author?A. A cameraman.B. A film director.C. A crowd-scene actorD. A workman for scene setting10. What made the author feel cold?A. The heavy snowfall.B. The man-made scene.C. The low temperature.D. The film being shown.11. What would happen in the "three minutes" mentioned, in the last paragraph?A. A new scene would be filmed.B. More stars would act in the film.C. The author would leave the studio.D. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule. that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overleatning explains why crammingJ(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on theexamination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.12.What‘the main idea of Paragraph 1A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.“D. Stories for children are easy to remember.13. The author explains the law of overlearning byA. presenting research findingsB. setting down general rulesC. making a comparisonD. using examples14. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables isA. a result of overlearningB. a special case of crammingC. a skill to deal with math problemsD. a basic step towards advanced studies15.What is the author's opinion on cramming?A. It leads to failure in college exams.B. It's helpful only in a limited way.C. It's possible to result in poor memory.D. It increases students' learning interest.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分))根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ATraditionally, red is regarded as the symbol of China, because it is the lucky color in Chinese culture. However, what amazed most people is that red is also a favorite color in Britain. There are red postboxes on street corners and on the sides of buildings. The British red phone box is famous all over the world. The famous double-decker bus is red. Red is the color traditionally worn by British soldiers in battle, and there is red in the UK’s Union Jack national flag. Britain even has a famous team of stunt (特技) jet planes called“The Red Arrows”.Furthermore, British nature also features many red animals. A beloved bird is the robin (知更鸟), which has a bright red breast. At Christmas time in winter, the bird is commonly found on the greetings cards people send each other. There is also quite a rare animal called the red squirrel (松鼠). Foxes are red, and they used to be hunted by men in red clothes. But is red considered lucky to British people? A good way to see how a culture looks at a color is to look at the way it uses it in language. The results may surprise you. Even though Britain has a lot of red on its high streets and in its countryside, red is used quite differently as a metaphor (比喻). If someone “sees red”, they are angry. When a person is “red faced”, they are out of breath. Red is also a political color: it means a left-winger (blue is the color of the political right). To be “in the red”is to be in debt (someone in credit (存款) is“in the black”).Look hard enough and you’ll find the color red being used in all countries. For instance the “red heart”symbol is pretty universal. But whether the British realize it or not, red is everywhere in Britain. It does seem that the country is in love with the color.1. The article is mainly about ______.A. the metaphor of red in the English languageB. the color red in British cultureC. the history of red items in BritainD. the preference for red animals in Britain2. Someone saying bad words about you behind your back might make you ______.A. see redB. red-facedC. in the redD. in the black3. It can be inferred from the article that ______.A. red has the same cultural images (意象) in China and BritainB. the color red is not as popular as it was before in BritainC. most British people are not aware of how popular the color red is in British cultureD. red has different meanings in different situations4. The text is mainly organized by ______.A. time orderB. space orderC. listing dataD. giving examplesBClimbers with pressing needs on Mount Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, will soon find an "eco-friendly" toilet at a Chinese campsite 7,028 meters (23,058 feet) above sea level in an ongoing campaign to deal with the peak's waste problem.Decades of commercial mountaineering has turned Mount Qomolangma into the world's highest rubbish dump as an increasing number of big-spending mountaineers pay little attention to the ugly footprint they leave behind.Fluorescent (荧光的) tents, abandoned climbing equipment, used gas tanks, and even human wastes pollute the route to the summit of the 8,848-meter peak.During the climbing season this spring, a Chinese expedition company will add an "eco-friendly" toilet at the higher campsite on the northern slope in Tibet."The toilet makes it easy to collect human waste produced by the climbers as there is a barrel with rubbish bags underneath the toilet," Xinhua quoted Pema Tinley, deputy secretary general of the Tibet Mountaineering Association, as saying. The waste will be collected and brought down the mountain and the temporary toilets will be removed at the end of the climbing season.Governments on both sides of the mountain have been battling the human waste and trash left by an increasing number of climbers.Meanwhile, engineers in Nepal are considering installing a biogas plant near the more popular south base camp that would turn climber poo into a useful fertilizer.Currently, raw sewage from the camp is carried to the next village and dumped into trenches (壕沟), which may contaminate the drinking water sources nearby.5. The passage is most likely selected from which section of a newspaper?A. BusinessB. HealthC. EnvironmentD. Education6. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. Great efforts have been done to prevent Mount Qomolangma from being polluted.B. A biogas plant has been established by Nepal near the south base camp.C. The eco-friendly toilet will be there forever.D. Mountain climbers have good sense of environment protection.7. The u nderlined word “contaminate” in the last Paragraph means _______.A. protectB. purifyC. cleanD. polluteCChina's first space-based science fiction blockbuster (大片) The Wandering Earth has stood out among the Lunar New Year's films, winning both the box office and reputation and regarded as a milestone (里程碑) in the development of China's science fiction industry. The film was adapted from the original work of Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin and tells the story of human beings fleeing the solar system with the Earth. The New York Times said that after years of hard work, China has joined the global competition for sci-fi movies. In the past, Hollywood had an unbreakable leading position in this field. The Wandering Earth is expected to open the dawning of a new era in science fiction films, breaking the monopoly (垄断) of sci-fi movies by Hollywood. The sci-fi movie featuring outer space is considered the spire (塔尖) of film-making. Such films require advanced visual effects to create realistic space scenes, with grand narrative themes to immerse the audience in the film, and also need to be carefully designed by the manufacturer to avoid logical and scientific mistakes. Therefore, such films usually require huge capital investment, the formation of advanced technical teams and excellent management teams. Even if these conditions are complete, accomplishing such movies will be a high-risk challenge.Liu Cixin said that 75 percent of the special effects in the movie were completed by theChinese team. From the audience reaction, the Chinese team's work was not inferior to the top team in Hollywood. The film has been released in North America and has an 8/10 rating on movie website IMDb, which is already a good result. In addition to special effects, what is even more surprising is the progress of Chinese film narrative skills. contains both universal concerns and the characteristics of Chinese culture. Science fiction movies generally require a sudden global crisis and a creative solution.Since the release of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), space-type sci-fi movies have gone through more than 50 years of history. Almost all of this half-century belongs to the U.S. From the Star Wars series to the recent years of Gravity (2013) and Interstellar (2014), Hollywood has always been at the forefront of creativity and technology in this field, constantly shocking the audience. However, an new era may be opened by China.8. The Wandering Earth has won great box-office and reputation9. According to the text, why sci-fi movies are considered the spire of the film-making industry?A. Because they often need huge investment.B. Because they can attract a large number of audience by the special effects.C. Because they are always about a global disaster and a related creative solution.D. Because they are most demanding in special effects, technical and management teams.10. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. The first ice-breaking Chinese sci-fi movieB. How to make a successful sci-fi movieC. The monopoly of the US in sci-fi movie fieldD. 第I卷(选择题)第一部分: (共三节,满分50分)第一节阅读理解(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分)AHundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. "We will rest here tonight,my men,” he said. "Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die."They were all very tired,so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they were very tired as well and also fell asleep one by one.The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country. The thistle is not a beautiful plant. It has sharp needles all over it. Few people like it. But the people of Scotland liked it so much that they made it their nationalflower.1. Hundreds of years ago there was a war between ________.A. Roman army and North EnglandB. a brave people and the ScotsC. England and ScotsD. Roman army and the Scots2. The Romans climbed up the hill quietly because ________.A. they wanted to catch the four guards firstB. they didn't want to wake the ScotsC. they wanted to reach the topD. they were afraid of the sharp needles of the thistle3. The people of Scotland made thistle their national flower because ________.A. it is a beautiful plantB. it was the thistle that helped the Scots to win the battleC. it had so many sharp needles all over itD. it is fresh and lovelyBBad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By trac king people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to makethe list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”4 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?A. Research papers.B. News reports C .Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.5. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?A. They’re socially inactive.B. They’re good at telling stories.C. D. Financial reviews.7 .What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Good News Beats Bad on Social NetworksB .Online News Attracts More PeopleC. Reading Habits Change with the TimesD. Sad Stories Travel Far and WideCIn her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超过……分数) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, forthat matter, teams of any kind. That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers. Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(瑕疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”One of the ironies(讽刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible.8. According to Paragraph 2, we know that _______.A. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schoolsB. too much importance is placed on sports in AmericaC. American high schools complain about sports timeD. PISA plays a very important role in America9. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _______.A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lotB. high expectations push up American students’ academic performanceC. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performanceD. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance10. The purpose of this article is to _______.A. compare Polish schools with those in AmericaB. call on American schools to learn from the Polish modelC. draw public attention to a weakness in American school traditionD. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

More than 315 billion pounds of plastic litter the world’s oceans today. Most of the plastic is garbage from towns and cities, as well as trash that people leave on beaches. rainwater, winds, and high tides bring the trash into the ocean or into rivers that lead to the ocean. Once it is under the waves, the plastic begins to break up into smaller and smaller pieces. It often collects in spots called garbage patches, which spread over large areas of the ocean.

To be “in the red” is to be in debt (someone in credit (存款) is“in the black”).Look hard enough and you’ll find the color red being used in all countries. For instance the“red heart”symbol is pretty universal. But whether the British realize it or not, red is everywhere in Britain. It does seem that the country is in love with the color.1. The article is mainly about ______.A. the metaphor of red in the English languageB. the color red in British cultureC. the history of red items in BritainD. the preference for red animals in Britain2. Someone saying bad words about you behind your back might make y ou ______.A. see redB. red-facedC. in the redD.in the black3. Even if these conditions are complete, accomplishing such movies will be a high-risk challenge.Liu Cixin said that 75 percent of the special effects in the movie were completed by the Chinese team. ATaobao is a major online shopping website in China. For those who just love to shop online, now is the best time of the year, because Nov 11, China’s Singles’ Day, will see some seemingly irrational discounts, in line with the tradition that was started in 2010.Last year, Taobao, a major online shopping website, set a record of 1 billion yuan in sales on that day alone, with a whopping 19.1 billion yuan exchanging hands on the website. The number of items sold paralyzed the delivery services due to overloading. On the verge of yet another annual spending spree, it’s worth reading up on tricks and tips to make the most of the shopping carnival.Be preparedSelect goods early and rationallyPut everything you want in the “shopping cart” to make a list of potential p urchases. Then go through it carefully, removing anything you selected on impulse.Seal a deal in advanceTalk to service staff as early as possible. They may have already decided on a discount policy for Nov 11 and may even ship the product to you in advance, which is a good way to avoid the heavy online traffic on the special day.Manage your budgetPopular items will be in strong demand, so make sure you’re ready to pay with the least number of procedures. It’s best to deposit a reasonable amount of mone y in your Alipay account so that you can pay without going through any lengthy verifications. If you’re planning on using a credit card, you can call the bank to apply for more credit, but only spend as much as you can afford to repay.Look at the real itemsWith many products, such as shoes and clothes, it’s better to look at them first to check their quality, size and appearance and ensure you’re buying the right one.Be smartIt’s all about timingAccording to Alipay, there are several peak hours when online traffic is heavy and there is a higher risk of failed transactions. Try to avoid the following time spans: 12 pm-1:30 am, 10-11 am, 3-5 pm, and 8-10 pm.Apps as a helping handSmartphone apps like Huihui Shopping list the best offers on a particular website, while Yitao,a software developed by Alibaba, compares prices of selected items across different websites to bring you the best deal.Track and open your packageBecause of the huge demand, delivery mistakes are inevitable, so try to track the package. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use threatens pedestrian safety.” British road safety groups warned pedestrians to be careful.Floor Lieshout, director of Youth For Road Safety, said, “ This study shows once more the importance of using all of our senses while we are near traffic. It is important that we find an attractive way to make youth learn about the risks of wearing headphones in traffic.”Andrew Howard , who is the head of road safety at the Automobile Association, added that some pedestrians can be “so focused in their own little world they forget the world going on around them”. That can include headphone wearers, Howard said, but also people talking on phones. However, Howard said that more researches needed to be done.Earlier studies have shown that people wearing headphones or talking on phones can suffer “inattentional blindness” which makes them isolated (孤立) from the world around them .Ian Harvey, at the charity Civic Voice, said that “ to defeat isolation and to help build a civic(文明的) society, people need to interact(交往) with each other .He said, “ A basis for any civilized society is communication—Surfing the web, listening to MP3s, reading blogs or sending e-mail is not interacting with a person; it’s interacting with a machine.“If people feel socially isolated, they need to have more face-to-face interactions with other human beings and in time, will begin to feel happier and more connected to the world and place they live in.”4. A。

As a Fulbright(富布莱特法案基金)scholar at Yale, I wanted very much to get some individual help from some famous professors, but their office-hours were only once a week and there were always students waiting outside。

At first, I was too polite to get their help。

Then I realized that Chinese politeness does not work in this society。

I needed to be aggressive to get what I wanted。

I also noticed that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.I was impressed by the role of the professor in the class. The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguisticfeature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said: “this is my personal opinion and it could be wrong. It would be a good idea if you could read the book I mentioned the other day.” Or,“ You may find the book I recommended helpful.” Or,“You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting。

参考题库(共20题)1.In a few states where racial prejudice is serious, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are states where the white man imposes his rule by force; there are states where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence – as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more serious. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us.The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the shabby houses at improving living-standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is weakened by having to mop up the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law. Before we can even begin to reflect on peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other's problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. "Talk, talk, talk," the advocates of violence say, "all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser." It's rather like the story of the famous lawyer who carefully explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. "Possible, my lord," the lawyer replied, "none the wiser, but surely far better informed." Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.【小题1】What is the best title for this passage?A.Advocating Violence.B.Violence Can Do Nothing to Reduce Race Prejudice.C.Important People on Both Sides See Violence As a Legitimate Solution. The 16yearold had already been married for a year. “She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, ‘I had to drop out of school’,” Robinson said in a telephone interview. “That conveyed to me the reality,” said Robinson, the first woman to serve as Ireland's president and former U.N. high commissioner for human fights. “Her life, as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended.”Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could do to address the coming challenges of an ever-increasing population, predicted by the United Nations to reach 7 billi on soon. “European countries are concerned about aging populations as is Japan, but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over the next 40 yearswhen the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion,” she said. “Almost all of that increase will be in poor developing countries, so that we have a very big challenge.”Family planning experts worry in particular about the future population explosion in subSaharan Africa. In May, the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100. Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing at 2.3 percent a year—more than double Asia's 1 percent growth rate. If that rate stays consistent, which is not certain, Africa's population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.Joel Cohen, a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birthrate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control, a secondary education teaches women to reduce their own fertility (生育力), improve the health of their children and allows them to move from a mindset of having many children, in the hopes that some will survive to improving the quality of each child's life, Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.【小题1】In the first paragraph, the author introduces his topic by ________. Your girl friends are out at a bar and your boyfriend is playing soccer with his mates. Two text messages later, you’re eating pizza and watching action movies with three guy friends. Perfect.“Guy friends” have the potential to enrich your life in ways that female friends and boyfriends just can’t.For starters, they provide an insider’s perspective on how men think, feel and behave. When dealing with male relatives, coworkers and even boyfriends, another man’s point of view can be incredibly useful. Three hours spent analyzing a situation in a caféwith your girlfriends can’t compete with a quick chat to a guy friend. Many women find that time spent with male friends can be a liberating and somewhat refreshing break from spending time with the girls. Without the judgmental gaze of other females, there is less pressure to dress up and compete for attention. Traditionally, girl-guy friendships are seen as hard to maintain. Most relationships between males and females that we come across in our day-to-day lives, whether in movies or books, are romantic by nature. These cultural images make girl-guy friendships seem impossible.Yet in reality, as gender roles loosen and equality becomes a norm in the workplace, it has become much more common for platonic friendships to blossom.“The belief that men and women can’t be friends comes from another era in which women were at home and men were in the workplace, and the only way they could get together was for romance,” explains psychologist Linda Sapadin to Psychology Today magazine. “Now they work together and share sports interests and socialize together.”“My boyfriend has met all of my guy friends so he’s quite accepting of me hanging out with them,” says Nellie. “Because we’ve been dating so long, there’s a level of trust where he knows I will make the right decision when choosing who to be friends with. “He understands that the kind of time that I spend differs between guys and girls. When I’m out with the girls, we’re gossiping or talking about clothes but when I’m spending time with the guys, it’s different. I think their carefree and ‘whatever goes’ attitude can sometimes be exactly what I need.”【小题1】What is the best title of the passage?A.Platonic friendship can be fun and liberating.B.Platonic friendship can take the place of boy-or-girl friendship.C.Man friendship is far more exciting than woman friendship.D.Both man friendship and woman friendship are necessary forgirls.【小题2】In writer’s opinion, girl-guy friendships_________A.are hard to maintain in modern society.B.are impossible for most boys and girls.C.are quite reasonable and thought highly of by most people.D.are quite interesting and accepted by more and more and moregirls.【小题3】Why did people think men and women can’t be friends in the past? A.work outB.make outC.sort outD.figure out7.One’s style of the dress reveals the human obsession with both novelty and tradition. People use clothing to declare their membership in a particular social group; however, the rules for what is acceptable dress for that group may change. In affluent societies, this changing of the rules is the driving force behind fashions. By keeping up with fashions, that is, by changing their clothing style frequently but meanwhile, members of a group both satisfy their desire fornoveltyand obey the rules, thus demonstrating their membership in the group. There are some interesting variations (变种) regarding individual status. Some people, particularly in the West, consider themselves of such high status that they do not need to display it with their clothing. For example, many wealthy people in the entertainment industry appear in very casual clothes, such as the worn jeans and work boots of a manual laborer. However, it is likely that a subtle but important signal, such as an expensive wristwatch, will prevail over the message of the casual dress. Such an inverted (颠倒的)status display is most likely to occur where the person’s high status is conveyed in ways other than with clothing, such as having a famous face.【小题1】According to the author, fashions serve all the following purposes EXCEPT A.satisfying an interest in noveltyB.signaling a change in personal beliefsC.displaying membership in a social groupD.following traditional rules【小题2】Why does the author discuss individual status in paragraph 2?A.To state that individual’s status is not important in the WestB.To argue that individuals need not obey every fashion ruleC.To contrast the status of entertainers with that of manual laborersD.To explain how high status may involve an inverted status display【小题3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word?A.newnessB.conventionC.noblenessD.benzene8.下文中共有10处错误,每句最多两处,错误涉及一个单词的增加、删除或修改。

But unlike the zoo’s other residents, they are not real animals. These creatures are actually huge sculp tures and they’re made entirely out of plastic trash from the ocean. These giant artworks, along with 14 others, are part of a traveling exhibit called “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea”. The Washed Ashore project, led by artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi, works to raise awareness about the problem of plastic pollution in Earth’s oceans.More than 315 billion pounds of plastic litter the world’s oceans today. Most of theplastic is garbage from towns and cities, as well as trash that people leave on beaches. rainwater, winds, and high tides bring the trash into the ocean or into rivers that lead to the ocean. Once it is under the waves, the plastic begins to break up into smaller and smaller pieces. It often collects in spots called garbage patches, which spread over large areas of the ocean.Thousands of marine animals--including whales, sea turtles, and fish--die each year from eating or getting stuck in plastic bags and other items. Plastic pieces can also injure coral and kill sea grass.Washed Ashore and other organizations are working to stop that from happening. Since 2010, Washed Ashore volunteers have collected 38,000 pounds of plastic trash from more than 3000 miles of beaches. They helped Pozzi create more than 60 sculptures of marine creatures that were harmed by plastic pollution. The artworks on display at the National Zoo include a 20-foot-long coral reef, a 12-foot-long shark, and a 16-foot-long parrot fish. Each one is made from hundreds of pieces of trash like water bottles and sunglasses.“These sculptures are a powerful reminder of our personal role and global responsibility in preserving biodiversity(生物多样性) on land and in the sea,” says Dennis Kelly, director of the National Zoo.4. IndifferentCFilmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $1,500 to have “Happy Birthday to You” sung in th e movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”Nelson’s movie is a documentary —a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events —and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself. Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters’ song.A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians al so say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.Experts estimate that Warner/ Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Musi c Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.”Nelson’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song.7.Jennifer Nelson had to pay Warner Music Group to ____________.A. own the copyright on a songB. have a song sung in her movieC. have it play a song in her movieD. have it write a song for her movie8.The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song ____________.A. has always been very popularB. has more than 200 years’ historyC. does not belong to Warner Music GroupD. was initially owned by another company9.According to Nelson’s lawyers, to sing the “Happy Birthday” song, people ____________.A. should pay the Hill sistersB. need not pay for any purposeC. should pay Warner Music GroupD. need not pay except for commercial use10.
