Similarly, people aged over35 go half as much as you would expect from their population size. We have reached the point of recognising the disconnection between art and the audience but haven’t yet determined how to bridge the gap. Two answers to tackling this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity of art histories and communicating these stories in more accessible ways.In 2018, a radio program called Art Matters was started with the aim of discussing art from a pop-culture viewpoint with topics that would engage younger and more diverse audience. It offers an accessible pathway to art history with conversations on different topics. Art history is about storytelling; art content shines when there is an effort to bring audience along for the discussion.More traditional institutions are paying attention. Recently theGettyMuseumissued a social-media challenge for people to recreate paintings using items they had at home. Users displayed incredible creativity, and the museum was flooded with submissions. This reaction proves that there is a potential desire for the audience to engage with art topics if the format is appealing. Since many people feelintimidatedand think that there’s a base level of understanding required to join the conversation, the Getty initiative serves as a reminder that there are many pathways to engaging with it.Another result of the Getty challenge was the exposure given to a diversity of artworks. The famous opera singer Peter Brathwaite, for example, made scores of attractive recreations highlighting centuries of black paintings. His efforts opposed the idea that there were not many historical paintings of black figures. It is extremely important that we do a better job of showing the complex and diverse stories that are represented in art.Social media have offered a platform for people who have not traditionally had a seat at the table. Anyone can recognise a gap in the field and address it. Accounts have gathered tens of thousands of followers. They are the proof that there is hunger to hear these art histories, and these themes work brilliantly for museum programming. But there is only so much that can be done without the museums and galleries changing meaningfully from within. We need to see a better balance of these stories represented in permanent collections. We also need a much wider diversity of people and interests represented on board. Ensuring that art-and writing and talking about art-is able to continue on the rising generation of storytellers, inside and outside of institutions, getting the funding and support they need to paint a brighter picture for the part.4. What challenge is the author trying to tackle?A. People doubt a great diversity of artworks.B. Fewer and fewer young people go to museums.C. Art appears too distant from common audience.D. Adult audience has a different understanding of art.5. What does the underlined word “intimidated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Tired.B. Worried.C. Annoyed.D. Surprised.6. In the author’s opinion, the museums and galleries should ________.A. make the art history stories accessible in a traditional way.B. change meaningfully for activities like the Getty challenge.C. limit the number of storytellers both in and out of institutions.D. improve the permanent collections by adding famous artworks.7. We can conclude from the passage that common audience ________.A. lacks the channels to understand and talk about art history.B. prefers to view artworks and hear art stories on social media.C. feels satisfied with people and interests represented on board.D. refuses to engage with diverse art topics and art history stories.CSport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress canbe physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout hasbeen described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters’ performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.8. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is_____________.A. to make sport less competitiveB. to increase their sense of successC. to reduce their mental stressD. to make sport more challenging9. According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_____________.A. it can help them learn more about societyB. it enables them to find faults in themselvesC. it can provide them with valuable experiencesD. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves10. Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_____________.A. believing that criticism does good to their early developmentB. without realizing criticism may destroy their selfconfidenceC. in order to make them remember life’s lessonsD. so as to put more pressure on them11. According to the passage parents and coaches should_____________.A. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sportB. help children to win every gameC. train children to cope with stressD. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sportDDogs are often called as “man's best friend”, MacKenzie, a four-pound Chihuahua(吉娃娃), was named winner of the 2020 American Hero Dog Competition on October 19, 2020.In its tenth year in 2020 the annual contest is the brainchild of American Humane, the country's first national charitable organization founded for the safety and well-being of animals. The seven-year-old chihuahua is now working for the Mia Foundation, an organization that rescues and nurses animals with inborn disabilities. The chihuahua does an excellent job and has raised various animals. She plays nurse, cleans, comforts and hugs them, acting as their mother and teaching them how to socialize, play and have good manners. In addition to her role as an animal caretaker, MacKenzie also visits schools to educate kids about the importance of accepting physical differences in both animals and people. Her heartwarming and inspiring story makes MacKenzie a worthy receiver ofAmerica's top dog honor.12. What can we infer about the American Hero Dog Competition?A. It was first held in 2010B. S.wolf population was limited to a handful of creatures in small comers of the northernMidwest. Then, in 1973, a law, the ESA, was passed to protect animals from becoming extinct. Gray wolves were one of the first animals placed on the endangered-species(濒危物种)list. Killing them wasillicit. And theU. ernment worked to promote their protection. In a famous example of this effort, starting in 1995, 31 wolves were moved fromCanadatoYellowstoneNational Park. By 2015, more than 500 gray wolves were living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem(生态系统).Today, the continentalU. S.is home to more than 6,000 gray wolves. On January 4, 2021, theU. ernment removed gray wolves from the endangered-species list.Usually, an animal's removal would be cause for celebration. But some environmental protectors say the wolves still need protection. In some parts of the country, wolves are increasing in numbers. More than a thousand of them can be found just inMichiganandWisconsin. But overall, their range is still a small part of what it was. Wolves used to live across most of the U. S. Now they , are found in fewer than a dozen states. Others argue that as long as a species is not in danger of extinction, it doesn't belong on the endangered-species list. And farmers with land near wolf living areas say that if the wolf's population continues to grow, more of their farm animals will be killed by wolves. But some protection groups worry that without protection, the wolf population will crash again. Since its creation, the program, which is mainly conducted after school, has spread to more than850 schools across the country. It has gotten a big push from the Canent craze among adolescents for comic book clubs and for Manga,a wildly popular variety of comic originating in Japan. The point is not to drop a comic book on a child’s desk and say:“read this”.Rather, the workshops give groups of students the opportunity to collaborate on often complex stories and characters that they then revise, publish and share with others in their communities.Teachers are finding it easier to teach writing, grammar and punctuation with material that students are fully invested in.And it turns out that comic books have other built-in advantages. The pairing of visual and written plotlines that they rely on appear to be especially helpful to struggling readers. No one is suggesting that comic books should substitute for traditional books or for standard reading and composition lessons.Teachers who would once have dismissed comics out of hand are learning to exploita style that clearly has a powerful hold on young minds. They are using what works.51.Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage?A.Japanese Comic Books.ic Books in the Classroom.C.Reading Efficiently.D.A Current Craze.52.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Students’reading materials are often involved with their daily life.ic books can now take the place of textbooks at school.C.Teachers now give away comic books for children to read.D.Children’s imagination plays a key role in comic books.53.The underlined phrase“its”in Paragraph2probably refers to______.A.the Comic Book Project’sB.an elementary school’sC.Queens’D.the country’s54.The main purpose of the Comic Book Project is to________.A.develop the cooperation among adolescentsB.make sure that students live a rich and colorful life after schoolC.help students who have some difficulty in readingD.popularize a new method of teaching55.It can be inferred that________.ic books were first used in Japanese schoolsB.parents have different opinions about their children reading comic booksC.more and more teachers will realize the advantages of comic booksic books will be allowed to enter all the schools in the country(B)On her first morning in America last summer,my daughter went out to explore her new neighborhood alone, without even telling my wife or me.Of course we were worried;we had just moved from Berlin, and she was just8.But when she came home,we realized we had no reason to panic.Beaming with pride, she told us how she had discovered the little park around the corner, and had made friends with a few local dog owners. She had taken possession of her new environment, and was keen to teach us things we didn’t know. When this story comes up in conversations with American friends,we are usually met with polite disbelief. Most are horrified by the idea that their children might roam around without adult supervision. In Berlin, where we lived in the center of town, our girls would ride the Metro on their own–a no-no in Washington.Or they’d go alone to the playground or walk a mile to a piano lesson. Here in quiet and traffic-safe suburban Washington, they don’t even find other kids on the street to play with.On Halloween, when everybody was out to trick or treat,we were surprised by how many children actually lived here whom we had never seen.A study by the University of California has found that American kids spend90per cent of their leisure time at home, often in front of the TV or playing video games.Even when kids are physically active, they are watched closely by adults, either in school,at home,at afternoon activities or in the car, shuttling them from place to place.Such narrowing of children’s world has happened across the developed world. But German parents are generally much more accepting of letting children take some risks. To them,it seems that American’s middle class has taken overprotective parenting to a new level, with the government acting as a super nanny. But when it comes to their own children, the same respondents were terrified by the idea of givingthem only a little of the freedom they once enjoyed. Many cited fear of abduction, even though crime rates have declined significantly. The most recent in-depth study found that,in1999,only115children nationwide were victims of a“stereotypical kidnapping”by a stranger;the majority was abducted by a family member. The same year,2931children under15died as passengers in car accidents.Driving children around is statistically more dangerous than letting them roam freely.“We are depriving them of opportunities to learn how to take control of their own lives,”writes Peter Gray,a research professor at Boston College. He argues that this increases the chance that they will suffer from anxiety, depression, and various other mental disorders, which have gone up dramatically in recent decades.I am no psychologist like Professor Gray, but I know I won’t be around forever to protect my girls from the challenges life holds in store for them. And by giving kids more control over their lives, they learn to have more confidence in their own capabilities.56.Hearing the author’s daughter exploring the new neighborhood alone, his American friends feel ________.A.worriedB.proudC.doubtfulD.terrified57.We can conclude from Paragraph3that________.A.American kids enjoy playing at homeB.German parents are less protective than American parentsC.German kids like taking risks more than American kidsD.American parents don’t limit their children’s activities in their leisure time58.In which of the following countries isn’t narrowing of the child’s world likely to happen?A.AmericaB.IndiaC.JapanD.England59.It’s implied from Professor Gray’s words that________.A.parents should always be around their children to protect them from risksB.more and more parents suffer from mental problemsC.children are having more opportunities to take control of their livesD.giving children more freedom is beneficial to their mental development60.Which of the following words can best describe the author’s parenting?A.Open-mined.B.Irresponsible.C.Careless.D.Protective.(C)Glaciers are large masses of ice on land that show evidence of past or present movement. They grow by the gradual transformation of snow into glacier ice.A fresh snowfall is a fluffy mass of loosely packed snowflakes, small delicate ice crystals grown in the atmosphere. As the snow ages on the ground for weeks or months, the crystals shrink and become more compact, and the whole mass becomes squeezed together into a more dense form, granular snow.As new snow falls and buries the older snow, the layers of granular snow further compact to form firm,a much denser kind of snow, usually a year or more old, which has little pore space.Further burial and slow cementation–a process by which crystals become held together in a mosaic of intergrown ice crystals–finally produce solid glacial ice.In this process of recrystallization, the growth of new crystals at the expense of old ones, the percentage of air is reduced from about90percent for snowflakes to less than20 percent for glacier ice.The whole process may take as little as a few years, but more likely ten or twenty years or longer. The snow is usually many meters deep by the time the lower layers are converted into ice.In cold glaciers those formed in the coldest regions of the Earth, the entire mass of ice is at temperatures below the melting point and no free water exists. In temperate glaciers, the ice is at the melting point at every pressure level within the glacier, and free water is present as small drops or aslarger accumulations in tunnels within or beneath the ice.Formation of a glacier is complete when ice has accumulated to a thickness(and thus weight) sufficient to make it move slowly under pressure,in much the same way that solid rock deep within the Earth can change shape without breaking.Once that point is reached, the ice flows downhill, either as a tongue of ice filling a valley or as thick ice cap that flows out in directions from the highest central area where the most snow accumulates. The trip down leads to the eventual melting of ice.61.Which of the following does the passage mainly discuss?A.The effect of glaciers on climate.B.Damage from glaciers.C.Glacier formation.D.The location of glaciers.62.Which of the following will cause density within the glacier to increase?A.Increased water and air content.B.Pressure from the weight of new snow.C.Long periods of darkness and temperature variations.D.Movement of the glacier.63.Which of the following will be lost if a glacier forms?A.AirB.PressureC.WeightD.Rocks64.What is the purpose of the material in paragraph3?A.To define two types of glaciers.B.To contrast glacier ice with non-glacier ice.C.To present theories of glacier formation.D.To discuss the similarities between glacial types.65.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that a glacier________.A.can revert to a fluffy massB.maintains the same shape following passage and answer the questions. As researchers learn more about how children’s intelligence develops, they are increasingly surprised by the power of parents. The power of the school has been replaced by the home.To begin with, all the factors which are part of intelligence—the child’s understanding of language, learning patterns, curiosity —are established well before the child enters school at the age of six.Study after study has shown that even after school begins, children’s achievements have been far more influenced by parents than by teachers. This is particularly true about learning that is language-related.The school rather than the home is given credit for variations in achievement in subjects such as science. In view of their power,it’s sad to see so many parents not making the most of their child’s intelligence.Until recently parents had been warned by educators who asked them not to educate their children. Many teachers now realize that children cannot be educated only at school and parents are being asked to contribute both before and after the child enters school.Parents have been particularly afraid to teach reading at home.Of course, children shouldn’t be pushed to read by their parents, but educators have discovered that reading is best taught individually—and the easiest place to do this is at home. Many four-and five-year-olds who have been shown a few letters and taught their sounds will compose single words of their own with them even before they have been taught to read.1.What have researchers found out about the influence of parents and the school on children’s intelligence?2.What do researchers conclude about children’s learning patterns?3.In which area may school play a more important role?4.Why did many parents fail to make the most of their Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)I loved most of the two years I’d spent in V olgograd, in the south of Russia, but in those last few months Irealised that what made me enjoy it was partly the knowledge that I’d soon be returning home, to the family and friends, and the milder weather London had to offer. The time I spent in V olgograd had been a real eye-opener as far as experiencing a different culture was concerned. When I first arrived, I was eager to make friends, and went out of my way to be polite wherever I could. Most of the time, my attempts to strike up conversation were met with icy stares and one-word replies. I started to think that Russians were a cold people, and I was unlikely to ever make any new friends.“I think you’re not having a good time here,” saidLudmilla, the secreta ry at the school where I was working. “You will come for dinner with my family on Sunday, I won’t take no for an answer.”When I turned up, flowers and wine in hand, I was enveloped in warm handshakes, inviting hugs, warm laughter and murmurs of “ochenpriyatna” (very pleased to meet you). The meal was eaten and a few toasts were drunk. Then I know Russians are actually warm, friendly people, but just too proud to wear their hearts on their sleeves with people they don’t know.Another thing I learnt about Russians is the way the men show their respect for women, both young and old. One day, I had a rather unfortunate incident on the bus. I was sitting there, deeply absorbed in the book I was reading, when I started to notice a quiet murmuring all around me. I looked around, and noticed how the people to my left and behind me were looking across at me and whispering to each other. In front of me was a young woman. Just when I was about to ask, in my broken Russian if something was wrong, a man in front of me got up and offered his seat to the young woman, whose face transformed in an instant to an angelic smile as she accepted, and sat down. My face turned red. I got off at the next stop and walked the extra six blocks home. Now, back in London, I had suddenly found myself in the same position. There I was on the bus, and a young woman got on. Looking round, I noticed with a panicthat there were no other seats free. Proud of what I learnt, I eagerly leapt to my feet and offered my seat. When she looked surprised and told me she was “OK, thanks”, I was ashamed. Once more, I got off early and walked. It was going to take a while to get back into the swing of things.56. The thought that he would return to London soon.D. The fact that he had a better knowledge of V olgograd.57. After having dinner with Ludmilla, the writer found that_________.A. Russians are not unfriendly by natureB. Russians love to invite people to dinnerC. Russians prefer not to talk much at homeD. Russians like communicating with strangers58. How did the writer feel when he saw a man gave up his seat to the young woman?A. He felt misunderstood.B. He felt ashamed.C. He felt annoyed.D. He felt frightened.59. What information does the writer intend to convey in the last paragraph?A. Women in London needed special care.B. London was not as familiar to him as he thought.C. The bus service in London was far from satisfactory.D. People in London were less polite than those in V olgograd.(B)Between 1991 and 1994 Nick Pope worked at the British Ministry of Defence investigating UFOs. He received 2,300 reports each year, of which around 90% couldbe explained. For the other 10% he could find no explanation.Sighting AThe first call came from a police officer. He and his colleague had been on a routine patrol the night before and had seen a UFO. The officer was often on duty at night and was used to the sights and sounds of the darkness. But what he and his colleague had seen was like nothing they had come across before. This was no shooting star, no meteor. Two bright lights, with a third, fainter one, were flying in perfect formation across the sky. I questioned the officer carefully over the phone. From what he told me about their colour and movement, they were not aircraft lights or fireballs. They were simply unidentifiable. As the morning wore on, the calls came thick and fast from other parts of the country. Most sightings had occurred between 1:00 and 1:30 am with particular concentration at 1:10 am. One of the sightings was from a man with vast experience of aeroplanes and mathematics. He had watched the objects flying low over the coast and had timed their passage between two points on the shoreline; he was able to calculate their speed at about 1,100 mph.Sighting BThere is usually a delay between a sighting and when a witness decides to contact someone “official”. In the case of the “Capital” sighting, things were rather more immediate. The call came from Capital Radio’s headquarters in London and the voice was very excited. The caller was staring out of his window, giving me a commentary on a UFO about to land in Re gents Park. There was hysteria in his voice. “It’s almost down ... it looks a bit like—like a big kite, but it can’t be. It’s down! It’s down! My God, people are gathering around it ...”There was a pause. The voice seemed less panicked. “It can’t be a kite, can it? Oh, the people are putting it back in a box. It is a kite. Sorry for having wasted your time.” He hung up. Goodness knows how upset he had been in those few mad minutes. Goodness knows how embarrassed he is at the memory of it.60. What is the passage mainly about?A. The UFOs that Nick Pope has ever seen.B. The investigation that Nick Pope did into UFOs.C. The reports about the UFOs that Nick Pope received.D. The explanations that Nick Pope proposed about UFOs.61. What can be learned from Sighting A?A. The object’s colour was similar to fireballs but different from aircraft lights.B. The object flew less fast than other UFOs that people had witnessed.C. The two police officers had thought the object was a shooting star.D. 1:10 am was the time that the object was seen by most people.62. What conclusion can be drawn from Sighting B?A. The witness mistook what he saw for a UFO.B. The witness should have confirmed what he saw first.C. The witness felt excited even when he hung up the phone.D. The witness was in Regents Park when a UFO appeared.(C)A lone humpback whale travelled more than 9,800 kilometres from breeding areas in Brazil to those in Madagascar, setting a record for the longest mammal migration ever documented.Humpback whales are known to have some of the longest migration distances of all mammals, and this huge journey is about 400 kilometres farther than the previous humpback record. The finding was made by Peter Stevick, a biologist at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. The whale’s journey was unusual not only for its length, but also because it travelled across almost 90 degrees of longitudefrom west to east. Typically, humpbacks move in a north-south direction between cold feeding areas and warm breeding grounds—and the longest journeys which have been recorded until now have been between breeding and feeding sites. The whale, a female, was first spotted off the coast of Brazil, where researchers photographed its tail fluke. Two years later, a tourist on a whale-watching boat snapped a photo of the humpback near Madagascar. To match the two sightings, Stevick’s team used an extensive international catalogue of photographs of the undersides of tail flukes, which have distinctive markings. Researchers routinely compare the markings in each new photograph to those in the archive. The scientists then estimated the animal’s shortest possible route: an arc skirtingthe southern tip of South Africa and heading northeast towards Madagascar. The minimum distance is 9,800 kilometres, says Stevick, but this is likely to be an underestimate, because the whale probably took a detour to feed on krill in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica before reaching its destination.“Most humpback-whale researchers focus on their efforts on the Northern Hemisphere because the Southern Ocean nearAntarctica is a tough environment and it is hard to get to,”explained Rochelle Constantine, who studies the ecology of humpback whales at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. But, for whales, oceans in the Southern Hemisphere are wider and easier to travel across, says Constantine. Scientists will probably observe more long-distance migrations in the Southern Hemisphere as satellite tracking becomes increasingly common, she adds.Daniel Palacios, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, says that the record- breaking journey could indicate that migration patterns are shifting as populations begin to recover from near-extinction and the population increases. But the reasons why the whale did not follow the usual migration routes remain a mystery. She could have been exploring new habitats, or simply have lost her way. “We generally think of humpback whales as very well studied, but then they surprise us with things like this,” Palacios says. “Undoubtedly there are a lot of things we still don’t know about whale migration.”63. In what way was the whale’s journey considered unusual?A. It covered a long distance from west to east.B. A female whale rather than a male one completed it.C. The whale moved from its breeding ground to its feeding area.D. No one had ever spotted the whale other than at its destination.64. Why did the researchers compare the markings on tail flukes?A. There is a vast collection of such markings.B. The markings there last by far the longest.C. No two whales share the same markings.D. The markings are easiest to photograph.65. What can be inferred from the passage?A. More evidence should have been provided that the whale had ever arrived atMadagascar.B. South Hemisphere can provide more information about humpback whales’ migration.C. The whale’s actual route might well have been shorter than the scientists had estimated.D. North Hemisphere’s environment is becoming tougher for whales to s urvive.66. What is the passage mainly about?A. A female whale was spotted twice in the Southern Ocean.B. Research on whales’ migration has seen a breakthrough.C. Whales’migration routes vary with the climate change.D. A whale surprises researchers with her journey.Section CDirections:Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Television—Past and FutureEveryone knows that Scotsman John Logie Baird invented the first television: inthe early 1920s, he made a basic television which transmitted pictures, but he didn’t develop his idea further._______67_____. People often call him “the father of television”as his invention became the basis of all modern televisions. The BBC (the British Broadcasting Corporation) made its first TV programmes in 1936._______68______. There were programmes for only two hours a day—except Sundays, when they didn’tshow any programmes at all! As well as news and sports, cookery programmes were popular even in the 1930s; Frenchman Marcel Boulestin became the first TV chef in 1937. The first TV advertisement, in 1941, was for a Bulova clock: it lasted 20 seconds and the company paid just $9 to show it during a baseball game in New York. ______69______ Colour TV came to the USA in the 1950s, to Japan in 1960 and to Europe and South America in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Meanwhile, in 1967 people all over the world watched as The Beatles sang on the programme Our World, the first-ever satellite TV programme. The world’s first video recorders came from Japan in the mid-1970s, but DVD players didn’t appear until November 1996, also made by Japanese companies. From 2005, it became possible to watch TV on your mobile phone, thanks to 3G technology.____70______Canada and Japan did the same in 2011. People watched the first TV programme nearly 70 years ago. After the huge changes in television broadcasting in the 20th century, who knows what the next 80 years will bring?IV. Summary WritingDirections:Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.Reading the SignsMost experts agree that it only takes between 90 seconds and four minutes to decide what we think about someone. And in fact, 80% of the time, we reach a conclusion about someone based on body language, before that person has even opened their mouth! Of course, what you say later will matter, and this is your responsibility. However, you do need to get the body language right straight away or people won’t stay around long enough to find out how fascinating you really are! Many gestures, su ch as how you say “yes” or “no”, originate from a specific country, but others are universal. For example, all people wrinkle their noses and raise their top lip to show dislike or criticism. Everyone knows what a smile is, too, and when you’re only pretend ing to smile. This is because muscles around the eyes are linked to the emotional part of your brain, so they only work when you really mean it.There are also signals to tell us whether someone is attracted to us. This preference is shown by enlarged pupils and they will blink more often. Admirers will also mirror your behavior, often unconsciously. So if you lean forward or take a sip of a drink, you will find that they will do the same. However, there is another gesture we are probably unaware of, but which is used by every culture on Earth and which some experts claim is the most instantly recognizable non-verbal human greeting. When we first see someone we find attractive, our eyebrows rise and fall and if they feel the same, they raise their eyebrows, t oo. It’s not surprising if you have never noticed this, since the whole process only lasts about a fifth of a second! However, don’t make judgments about people on just one thing! Look for at least four signals. Sitting with their arms crossed might look as if someone is being defensive, but it might really mean they’re feeling cold!V. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72. 适量的运动有助于睡眠。

Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are foursuggested answers marked A,B,CandD. Choose the best answer andblacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage oneWhat do you use to get around town? A cat? A bike? Your feet? Perhaps you should try a Segway! The Segway is perfect for short journey. It isan electric vehicle that consists of a platform between two wheels, with a pole that connects the platform to the handlebars. To ride it, you step up onto the platform, and control the Segway by moving your body. Lean forwards to go faster, and backwards to slow down.On older models, direction is controlled by a twist grip(扭转把手)on the left handlebar. This varies the speeds between the two motors, a decrease in the seed of the left wheel would turn the Segway to the left. With never models you simply lean to the left or right. Meanwhile, a gyroscope(陀螺仪)detects your movements and prevents the machine form falling over. The Segway has a maximum speed of 19 km per hour and a range of about 38 km. After that, you need to plug it in and recharge the battery.Segways are used for a variety of purposes. People with mobility problems can now enjoy walks in the country with their friends and family. Some golfers use them asan alternative to the golf cart. And dog owners now have an easier way to take the dog to the park. A few police forces use Segways, too. They allow officers to move quickly whilst maintaining contact with the public. They are also becoming a common sight on airport. However, the most popular use is in tourism, particularly for city tours. Visit any major tourist city in summer, sit outside a cafe for a while and there is a good chance you will see a group of tourists passing on Segways. ()36.What is the Segway according to this passage?A. A pole that connects two handlebars.B. An electric two-wheeled vehicle for short trips.C. A bicycle with a platform between two wheels.D. A newly appeared public traffic vehicle.()37. How do you turn to the left on Segways of newer models?A. Press the left barB. Adjust the twist gripC. When a Segway is usefulB. Where to find a SegwayC. How to control a SegwayD. What a Segway is likePassage TwoWe all love a hero, and rescue dogs are some of the biggest heroes of all. Youwill often find them going above and beyond duty to save someone, risking--and at times losing--their lives in the process.Rescue dogs are generally found in the Sporting and Hunting Groups, or from the traditional Herding Group. These types include the Bloodhound, Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Belgian Malinois--all of which are chosen for search-and-rescue duty because of their amazing physical strength, loyalty, and their tendency for mental stability. These types also have a keen sense of hearing and smell--to better locate lost individuals—and are often able to access hard-to-reach areas. As highly trained animals, they serve in many different fields, including specialist search, snow slide rescue, dead body location, and tracking. To overcome obstacles and succeed when performing the demanding duties of a search-and-rescue worker, a dog must display certain qualities. In addition to intelligence and strength, the dog must be swift, confident, easily trainable, adaptable, and have a high level of stamina (耐力) and endurance.A strong sense of group cooperation and an ability to engage in friendly play during "down" time is also required of search-and-rescue dogs.A rescue dog goes through many, many hours of intensive training to be fit for duty. Training is not for the faint-hearted. Certification training can take from two to three years, working three to four hours a day, three to six days a week, often in group,team-oriented sessions. Each search-and-rescue field requires different types of training. Rescue training, for instance, includes "air scenting"--where dogs are trained to smell the air for the victim' s scent (气味) and then follow the scent to the person. This ability is crucial to finding victims trapped under collapsed buildings and snow slide.()40. Rescue dogs are chosen probably because__A. they are braveB. they are loyalC. they have amazing appearancesD. they have good eyesight()41. What does "faint-hearted" in Paragraph 5 mean?A. They say it is for women to be paid less than men for the same work. People who hold the opposite opinion (mainly men)have an answer to this. They say that men have more responsibility than women;a married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make the important decision, and therefore it is right for men to be paid more. There are some people who hold even stronger opinion than this and are against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say,the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take full time job, they will be unable to do the things. Women are best at making a comfortable home and bringing up children. They will have to give up their present position in society. This is exactly what they want to give up, the women who disagree say. They want to escape from the limited place which society expects them to fill and to have freedom to choose between a job and home life,or mixture of the two. Women have the right of equal pay and equal opportunities. These women have expressed their opinions forcefully busing the famous saying,“All men are created equal.”They point out that the meaning of this sentence is “all human being are created equal.”( )48. The women use the phrase “equal pay for equal work” to demand that _____.A. woman's work shouldn't be harder than men'sB. men should be paid less than womenC. men and women should be paid the same amount of money for the same workD. people doing harder work should earn more( )49.What exactly do the women who disagree want to give up?A. Their jobB. Their home lifeC. Their present position in societyD. Their right to pay( )50.People who disagree with women's opinions believe _____.A. men's responsibilities are different from women'sB. men can earn money more easily than womenC. women can't do what men canD. men have to work much harder than women( )51. The women use the saying “all men created equal” to show that ___.A. the position of women has changed a little in modern timeB. men and women had equal power in early American societyC. men's right are always considered more important than women'sD. in American society men and women should in modern time( )52.The women who disagree say that _______.A. women want more freedom in deciding the kind of life the liveB. women are no longer interested in taking care of their homesC. if women are given equal pay, their opportunities will be greatD. women need opportunities to go out of the house more oftenPassage FiveAbout 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science (B.S.) degree. Some students attend a junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生) or junior (三年级生).It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entrance examinations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school. Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive. Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school. Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies.Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Somehave full-time jobs and go to school part-time. Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time. While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student’s time, most still enjoy social activities. Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity. ( )53. College education is _______ in America.A. very rareB. quite commonC. something difficultD. almost impossible( )54. Which of the following is NOT required for entering most private schools.A. entrance examinationsB. college prep classesC.

AWhat to Eat—and What to Skip—When It Comes to Takeout FoodIf the burden on your wallet doesn't bother you much, the effect your takeout habit can have on your waistline just might arouse your attention. Here's the best and worst of the lot for your belly.Steamed Vegetable Dumplings: Order This. When she orders Chinese, registered dietitian nutritionist Elisa Zied gets an order of steamed vegetable dumplings. "I often pair them with either chicken and broccoli in brown sauce(I ask for a little saucemade without sugar)or steamed shrimp dumplings," she tells us.Crab Wontons: Not That! When you deconstruct crab wontons, it's easy to see why they're a "Not That!" The inside is filled with crabmeat and cream cheese(which is just a fancy, spreadable fat). The wonton is made of refined flour, egg and salt and the crispy(脆的)coating is a result of a deep oil bath.Peking Duck: Order This. Most of the fat from the skin flows out of the duck over the course of cooking, making this a healthier choice than most of the stir-fry dishes available. Order a side of steamed vegetables and serve it with a small scoop of brown rice. Done and done!Sweet and Sour Anything: Not That!Anything with “sweet and sour” in its title is a powerful cue that something has been deep-fried and covered in a sickly-sweet pink sauce. If you pair your selection with a side of rice, you're looking at a 1,000-calorie meal.Summer Roll: Order This.Summer rolls are steamed instead of fried—and typically filled with lean proteins and vegetables, making them a winning appetizer in our book. Pair them with an order of edamame(毛豆)and a broth-based soup for a satisfying, filling meal.Spring Roll: Not That!Spring=deep-fried, which is why we say to skip them! They're filled with fat and calories your belly doesn'tneed.1.What kind of cooking method should be skipped according to the text?A.Steaming.B.Stir-frying.C.Deep-frying.D.Boiling.2.Which of the following suits as a good starter for a meal?A.Chicken and broccoli.B.Steamed vegetable dumplings.C.Peking duck.D.Summer rolls.3.Where can the text be found?A.In a recipe.B.In a guidebook.C.In a science fiction.D.In a health magazine.BAs a rider, Anna Kiesenhofe’s Olympics victory might be a surprise. The winner of the road race at the Tokyo Olympics left the sport at the end of 2017 when she found herself out of contract (合同). She came into Tokyo without a professional team and left as an Olympic champion. The 30-year old began her cycling career in 2014 after running injuries that prevented her from continuing her pursuits of triathlon (铁人三项). She later joined a Catalan team and won the Spanish National Cup in 2016.The then-26 year old signedher first professional contract with Lotto Soudal Ladies for the following season. However, she ended her 2017 campaign in April and did not sign a contract for 2018, eventually taking a year off the bike. In 2019, Kiesenhofer came back to the sport as a rider, winning the Austrian national road race. Despite her results, Kiesenhofer sill had no professional contract while going into the Tokyo Olympics.Kiesenhofer was the first rider to attack in the Olympic road race, eventually forming a breakaway along with Carl Oberholzer, Omer Shapira, Vera Looser and Anna Plichta, which went on to reach a gap of 11 minutes. After Looser and Oberholzer were dropped, Kiesnhofer ataced her two remaining breakaway companions. After Shapira and Plichta were caught by the peloton (主车群), the rest of the riders seemed to believe that they were racing among themselves for Gold, not knowing that Remehofere was still in front. While it might be a misjudgment from the rest of the peloton that allowed Kiesenhofer to keep her lead of more than two minutes, other riders’ mistakes should not detract from the Austrian’s efforts.Off the bike the new Olympic Champion has a PhD in mathematics after studying at the Technical University of Vienne as well as at Cambridge University. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but theydid not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study. Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass (肌肉质量), muscular strength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune (免疫的) systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups. Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either. The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.12. How did the researchers carry out the study?A. By comparing.B. By discussing.C. By imagining.D. By reasoning.13. Which of the following is a result of the research?A. The cyclists kept a thin body shape.B. The non-exercisers gained weight easily.C. The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.D. The non-exercisers usually had health problems.14. Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?A. The cyclists had normal aging process.B. The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.C. The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.D. Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Healthy People Need More ExerciseB. Take an Exercise, the Harder, the BetterC. 2019-2020学年上海外国语大学附属外国语学校初中部高三英语模拟试卷及答案

AIf you are sending a text message watching TV or listening to the radio, you may stop and give this your full attention. Multitasking shrinks (使.....萎缩)the brain? research suggests.A study found that men and womenwho frequently used several types of technology at the same time had less grey matter in a key part of the brain. University of Sussex researchers said, " Using mobile phones, laptops and other media devicessimultaneouslycould be changing the structure of our brains."Worryingly, the part of the brain that shrinks is involved in processing emotion. The finding follows research which has linked multitasking with a shortened attention span, depression , anxiety and lower grades at school. The researchers began by asking 75 healthy men and women how often they divided their attention between different types of technology. This could mean sending a text message while listening to music and checking e-mail, or speaking on the phone while watching TV and surfing the Internet. The volunteers were then given brain scans which showed they had less grey matter in a region called the anterior cingu-late cortex (ACC)(前扣带皮层).Scientists have proved that brain structure can be changed on exposure to fresh environments and experience.Other studies have shown that training—such as learning to play magic tricks or taxi drivers' learning the map of London―can increase grey matter densities (密度)in certain parts.Experts have also warned of the harmful impact technology can have on our memory and attention span. The University of California team conducted a survey of more than 18,000 people aged between 18 and 99,and found 20%had problems with memory. Researchers were shocked greatly by the 14 % of 18 to 39-year-old people who also worried about their memories.Multitasking may shorten attention span, making it harder to focus and form memories, the researchers said, adding that youngsters may be particularly affected by stress.1. The underlined word " simultaneously" in Paragraph 2 means "________,"A. on one's ownB. at no timeC. at the same timeD. by accident2. All of the following are possible effects of multitasking EXCEPT________ .A. saving timeB. a shortened attention spanC. lower grades at schoolD. depression and anxiety3. Which ofthe following can be the best title of this passage?A. Media multitasking is becoming more popularB. Multitasking shrinks the brainC. Multitasking may shorten attention spanD. People are worried about their memories.BIn the world of Chinese archaeology(考古学), a sign of a dig's importance is the sight of Zhou Mingsheng at work. A field technician who has worked at archaeological sites all aroundChina. Master Zhou iscredited with the gentlest touch in his profession. Born into a farming family, he is a “national-level craftsman” with a talent for using simple tools to get relics(遗物) that wouldcrumblein other hands, says his current boss, Wang Xu, director of an archaeological site at Shuanghuaishu, a Neolithic(新石器时代的) settlement near the Yellow River in the central province of Henan. It is not beauty that attracts visitors to Shuanghuaishu. At 5,300 years old, the settlement is the work of a culture too simple to have left behind many buried treasures. The single most precious find, to date, is a finger-length sculpture of a silkworm. Nor is the setting lovely: an area surrounded by deafening insects, between a highway and two power stations. Rather, the site's importance is historical. For since the birth of Chinese archaeology in the 1920s, it has been inseparable from claims thatChinahas the oldest unbroken civilisation on Earth.Leading archaeologists say that the site has the right combination of location, age and distinctive cultural elements to be the capital of an early Chinese kingdom. That would make it a bridge betweenChina's written history and the era of the Yellow Emperor, who is said to rule over these central plains almost 5,000 years ago, though many foreign scholars doubt his existence. Chinese media call the site proof ofChina's 5,000 years of history.Foreigners complain about a lack of written records, Mr. Wang notes. Perhaps they are missing symbols that will one day be understood, for instance in patterned pottery. Outsiders “can't keep using Western standards to apply to Chinese ruins,” he argues.4. What does the underlined word “crumble” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Break.B. Start.C. Wait.D. Shine.5. Why does Shuanghuaishu attract visitors?A. It has appealing scenery.B. It has various precious treasures.C. It is of great historical significance.D. It is easily accessible.6. What is Mr. Wang's attitude towards foreigners’ view?A. Unconcern.B. Disapproving.C. Supportive.D. Not mentioned.7. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Chinese history amazes the world.B. Chinese archaeology catches on.C. China follows its tradition.D.Chinadigs its past.COne of the most popular street food found inChinais no doubt the barbecue. A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.Shown on June 20, the program has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site . To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV program telling stories from late night informal Japanese bars.“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic― night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was someconversation while people were eating. However, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively atmosphere. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness. The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship. The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients(食材),ways of cooking and more importantly, the special environment and people, theworld will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do.” said Chen.8. What do we know about Chinese Barbecue?A. It has been becoming very popular on the Internet.B. It is thought highly of by most of the foreign tourists.C. It mainly talks about the most famous Chinese food.D. It shows the color1 ful nightlife in large cities ofChina.9. In which way was Chinese Barbecue different from Midnight Diner?A. It showed more kinds of food.B. It focused more on the diners.C. It showed the eating habits.D. It was less popular than Midnight Diner.10. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The importance of the barbecue to family.B. The influence of the barbecue on people’s manners.C. The influence of the barbecue on people’s lifestyle.D. The role of the barbecue in people’s relationship.11. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?A. To show the feature of Chinese food.B. To research a special way of cooking.C. To help the world understandChina.D. To introduce the history of the barbecue.DYellowstoneNational ParkbecameAmerica's first national park in 1872. The National Park Service was formed 44 years later in 1916.Yellowstone, which is mostly in the state of Wyoming, is considered an example of the success of the National Park System.Humans have been present in Yellowstone for more than 11,000 years.Yellowstone contains beautiful mountains, deep canyons(峡谷), lakes and rivers. The nameYellowstonecomes from the river running through the area. The amount of hot water it expels(排出)in that time can be as much as 31,000 liters or more.In addition to its beauty and wonder, Yellowstone is an animal sanctuary(保护区).
