That day, my friend Mel and I stood at the foot of the l1,240-foot Mount Hood at the age of 16.
We started at 3 a.m. It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s no sunlight so the snow is frozen hard (冻硬的). It was cold but we had warm clothes. Along the way, we met two other climbers and continued on together.
After 5 hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a point at about 10,000 feet. Then the wind got stronger and the other climbers turned back, but Mel and I went ahead. We were well prepared for the climb.
At around 9 a.m., we reached Ice Step. Suddenly, I heard the ice under my foot break. In a second, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling me as I rolled (翻滚) down the mountain. I stuck out my arms and legs, trying to catch anything. Luckily, I came to a stop on a ground just above Devil’s Kitchen. I’d fallen 600 feet. My face was bloodied from cuts. I checked my body, my head, neck and arms...
For the most part, I was fine, except that there was a bad pain in my left leg. I couldn’t move.
As Mel made her way down, I shouted for help, and other climbers came. They called the rescue team (救援队) and stayed with me. I lay on the ice in pain before the rescuers reached me and pulled me down the mountain to West Hospital. The doctors said it would be a year before I could climb again, but I was back 6 months later.
The experience made me grow as a person. Going through that at such a young age helped me realize that nothing could keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world.

In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, the popularity of peas spread around. The craze around eating these bright green mini-treats in the springtime was so great that the queen wrote once:
“The question of peas continues. The wish of eating them, the pleasure of having eaten them, and the joy of eating them again are the three subjects that we have been discussing for days.”
Peas are among the oldest crops (作物) in human history. Just about anything we call a
pea-whether a garden pea, snow pea, chickpea, or peanut-is a member of the larger family called Fabaceae. The peas we eat when fresh, green, and sweet-including garden peas, snap peas, and snow peas-are usually members of the type (种类) called Pisum. Other peas, such as chickpeas and peanuts, belong to some other types.
Sweet pea season is very short. The little round things come up as the winter months end and spring starts. In a few weeks, the leaves are overgrown and the peas not nearly as tasty. In fact, as soon as you pick peas off the vines (藤) , the sugars start changing into other forms, making them less delicious and sweet. It’s very difficult to keep peas sweet and fresh. If the queen had a fridge,
she might not have spent days losing her mind over these tiny green vegetables.

The duck was sleeping. What an easy target!Without much thought,Tommy picked up a stone, placed it in the center of the slingshot and fired. The stone hit the duck on the head and killed it!
Tommy never thought he would really hit the duck.He also felt upset that he had killed Grandma's pet.Feeling afraid that Grandma would punish him,he hid the dead duck in the woods.
Maggie had seen it all from the window, but she said nothing. After lunch the next day,Grandma said,"Maggie, let's wash the dishes. " Maggie said,"But Grandma,Tommy told me he wanted to help in the kitchen."
Then she said quietly to Tommy,"Remember the duck?" Tommy got nervous, knowing his sister knew about the duck.So without saying anything,he did the dishes.
Later that day,Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing.Grandma said,"I'm sorry but I need Maggie to help me prepare for the dinner." Maggie just smiled and said,"Well, that's all right because Tommy told me he wanted to help. "
She turned again to Tommy,"Remember the duck?" So Maggie went fishing and Tommy stayed to help. That night,Tommy lay on the bed, thought about the whole thing and decided that he wouldn't be taken advantage of any longer.
The next morning,he told Grandma that he had killed the duck.Grandma said,"I know, sweetheart.I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing.I was just wondering how

3.(10分)"If you look the right way,you can see that the whole world is a garden." These words come from The Secret Garden which first came out in 1911.At that time, only the very rich in Britain had gardens.Very soon after this, homes with gardens began to be built. This is what started the British love of gardening.Today millions of Brits like to say that they have "green fingers ",with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
①For many people in the UK,their garden is their own private world. ②Each spring, children
plant sunflowers and wait to see which one is the tallest. ③Experienced gardeners know just the right corner for roses and others spend hours trying to grow perfect vegetables to enter into competitions. ④And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the trees and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.
But in cities, limited space has led to people looking for new solutions. Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land on which to grow things.Today, there are over 4,000 people in London waiting for such pieces of land. One recent idea has been to turn housetops and walls into private gardens. These gardens have helped make the cities greener and the air cleaner.
As well as being good for the environment, gardening is also good for the spirit. What other free﹣time activity allows you to be at one with nature and create more beautiful living things? And take a moment to read this line from The Secret Garden:"Where you tend a rose...A thistle cannot grow. "

13.(10分)One thing that could help us to recover from tiredness is sleep. And sleeping is the favorite hobby of most people today.Studies show that the way people sleep at night decides the type of personality they have.Robert Phipps,a body language expert, has named four sleeping positions that influence personality.
Phipps found that worriers ,those who stress the most, are likely to sleep in the fetal position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up,the more comfort we are seeking.
The second most common position is the log.People sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side.Nearly 28 percent of people sleep this way and they often feel harder to move their body when they wake up."The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you are unwilling to change, which means you make things harder for yourself," according to Phipps.
Yearner sleepers are next on the list.About 25 percent of people sleep in this style ﹣on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are chasing their dreams or perhaps being chased themselves. " Yeaners are always expecting the best results,"explained Phipps. "These people often wake up refreshed and they are willing to face the challenges of the day ahead."
Perhaps the strangest sleeping style is the freefaller position. This sleeping position makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down on the stomach." These people," according to Phipps," feel like they have little control over their life." Not only is this the strangest sleeping style, but also the least
comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.
In conclusion,Phipps has only one more thing to add,"A good sleep sets us up for the following day and our sleeping positions can decide how we feel when we wake up.
