And yet here comes the interesting part: While some of us might go through life using fancy words, dressing in

Beatrice, for example, is a New Yorker who inherited (继承) millions of dollars. She told The New Y ork Times that she has a habit of removing the price t ags from her clothes so her house staff don’t see them and feel uncomfortable.
“We don’t want that ‘Wow’.” said Scott, also a New Yorker, who had just inherited over $3 million. “We’re just not the type of people who wear it on our sleeve.”

23.(8分)Amphora are clay jars originally invented in Egypt. They were so useful for storing and transporting wine at the time that they were eventually adopted by all of the cultures around the Mediterranean. It’s uncertain when they first arrived in Rome, but Greek colonists in southern Italy may have been the first to introduce them.
Previously, wine had been stored in leather sacks, but amphora offered several advantages to the Romans. They
were airtight, strong, relatively lightweight, and had two large handles that made them easy to carry, an important feature at a time when almost everything had to be transported by hand.. Like modern wine bottles, aphora had long, narrow necks that limited the amount of wine exposed to the open air. Similar to modern wine bottles, most amphoras became gradually thinner at the end. It made them easy to bury in the ground, which kept them cool during the warm months.
Sealing up the top of an amphora was a major difficulty and a variety of methods were used. The Egyptians stopped theirs with leaves and reeds covered with clay. The Greeks and Romans used rags and cork sometimes. None of these techniques provided an airtight seal, so Aleppo Pine resin(松脂)was used to seal the gaps around the top. It became so popular that resin was sometimes added to the wine in order to improve its flavor. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder, writing in the first century, recommended adding resin to wine and believed resin made from trees in the mountains created a better aroma than resin made from trees in the lowlands.
Though each amphora was constructed by hand, they were surprisingly uniform. Roman amphoras held one cubic foot of liquid, exactly seven gallons, and eventually became a standard unit of measurement throughout the Roman Empire. Unlike Greek amphora, Roman amphoras were not decorated. Before it dried, each amphora was given a stamp with the name of the workshop where it was manufactured or the workshop’s owner. Once the amphora was filled, its weight and contents were painted on the side.
1、What does an amphora look like?
A.B.
C.D.
2、Why did Aleppo Pine resin become popular in Rome?
A.It improved the flavor of wine.
B.It proved the best cover for amphoras.
C.It made amphoras last a longer time.
D.It was used for decoration by women.
3、What can we infer about Roman amphoras from the last paragraph?
A.They had beautiful designs.
B.They had rough appearances.
C.They were of the same size.
D.They were a symbol of status for the Romans.
4、What does the word “aroma” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Market. B.Smell.
C.Sound. D.Picture.
24.(8分)It’s 3 o’clock and you’ve been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn’t. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.
Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.
A craving is more complex. It activates (使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. So, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure.
In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings.
So, the next time you crave something very specific, know that your brain may be more to blame than your stomach.
1、What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To remind readers of their own special food.
B.To deepen the understanding of hunger.
C.To report the discovery of craving study.
D.To lead to the topic of the whole passage.
2、What do we learn about food craving?
A.It shows food is linked to feelings.
B.It ensures a person survives hunger.
C.It means the stomach functions well.
D.It proves the brain decides your appetite.
3、What’s the likely result of dieti ng?
A.The decrease of chemicals. B.The increase of food desire.
C.The refusal of fat and sugar. D.The disappearance of appetite.
4、What does the passage mainly discuss?
A.The functions of brain areas. B.What hunger is all about.
C.The findings of food craving. D.What dieting may bring us.
25.(10分)Many people have heard bee populations are declining due to such threats as pesticides(杀虫剂). And many understand bees are important to plant pollination(授粉). Yet, according to a study led by Utah State University ecologist Joseph Wilson, few are aware of the wide diversity of bees and other pollinators beyond such species as honeybees.
“The U.S. Postal Service recently put out its Protect Pollinator series, which features only the European honeybee and t he monarch butterfly,” says Wilson, assistant professor of biology at USU’s Tooele campus. “A social media commenter observed that using these two species on a campaign to protect pollinators is similar to focusing on chickens to save birds. It’s a pretty good comparison, actually.”
Wilson, with colleagues Matthew Forister of the University of Nevada-Reno, published findings in the Sept. 5, 2017, online edition of Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
“In our recent survey, 99 percent of our respondents said bees are important, yet only 14 percent were able to guess within 1,000, the actual number of bee species in the United States,” he says. “Most people guessed around 50 species of bees, while the correct number is about 4,000 known species.” Further, when shown images of varied insects, many people were unable to distinguish bees from non-bees.
“A challenge with lack of knowledge about bees is you can’t protect what you’re now aware of,” Wilson says. “We could be losing species or causing decline and not even know it.”
Public education is key to encouraging conservation efforts, he says. “Because conservation efforts require substantial public support, it’s important that the public understand bees and what needs to be done to protect these species,” Wilson says. “Education is the key to understanding bee declines and protecting our pollinators.”
1、According to the text, bees function as __________.
A.honey-makers
B.pest-killers
C.producers
D.pollinators
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Wilson is in support of the Protect Pollinator series.
B.The commenter observed honeybees and butterflies.
C.People neglect many other pollinators.
D.Protecting chicken can help save birds.
3、What does the underlined word “substantial” in the last paragraph mean?
A.legal.
B.large.
C.minimum.
D.slim.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.Not Only Honeybees
B.Protection of Honeybees
C.Growing Threats to Bees
D.Newly Discovered Bee Species
