As more and more books become movie adaptations,I can't help but think how this will affect English classes in America.Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago,I would be rewarded if I had read a number of classics.Today,a majority of those books are now also movies:Life of Pi,The Great Gatsby,Much Ado About Nothing and Anna Karenina, to name a few.
Even modern books such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter have been adapted for the big screen. In discussion with my students,I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon, which makes me wonder what effect movie adaptations have on modernday students. Will the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) encourage them to read books more carefully or to use movies to improve their understanding of the text?
The CC SS requires students to provide textbased evidence when reading and discussing a book.By focusing on such evidence, teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have not been cut when the book was adapted for the big screen. For instance, after reading and watching The Hunger Games—there were a number of details from the book that were missing from the film—many people were disappointed with Rue's meek (温顺的)movie role.A student who failed to read The Hunger Games would not quite understand Rue's impact on the games in the same way
as someone who had read the book and remembered all the details that went into her death.
I am not saying the CCSS will stop students from cutting corners, but I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provides,it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deep into texts and not just hitting the play button.
24.Ten years ago,students in America were ________.
A.fond of reading all kinds of novels
B.forbidden to discuss movies in class
C.not allowed to watch movies in the cinema
D.encouraged to read many literature works
根据第一段中的“Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago,I would be rewarded if I had read a number of classics.”
25.Which of the following might be the effect that movie adaptations have on modernday students?
A.They spend less time in studying.
B.They can't understand English texts.
C.They spend less time in reading.
D.They discuss movies more frequently.
根据第二段中的“In discussion with my students,I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon”可知,因为有名著改编的电影,现在的学生不读书了,故选择C项。

A.The Hunger Games is the worst movie adaptation.
B.It is a waste of time reading and discussing a book in class.
C.Movie adaptations may bring trouble in understanding the books.
D.Rue's impact on the games is perfectly presented in the movie.
27.According to the text,it seems that the CCSS ________.
A.prevents students watching movies
B.provides stude nts with wellknown movies
C.encourages students to write novels
D.provides guidance on teaching and learning
根据文章最后一段中的“I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provides,it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deep into texts and not just hitting the play button.”

Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more
important in some regions than in others (Detroit,Cleveland and Buffalo being the biggest Sweetest Day cities). It is a holiday that is gaining in popularity throughout the country.
Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose help and kindness we have enjoyed.
Many years ago,a Cleveland man, believing that the city's orphans and shutins often felt forgotten and neglected, formed the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this through the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors,he distributed these remembrances on a Saturday in October.During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to participate in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Sweetest Day's idea of spreading cheer to the poor was broadened to include everyone, and the day became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. And soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group's religious belief or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.Because for many peop le remembering takes the form of giftgiving,Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care about them,in a practical way.

Everyone sleeps. However, taking time to develop a sleep habit is probably the last thing on your mind and some sleep advice simply can't be forgotten._36_.
Watch TV until you fall asleep
It has nothing to do with what you watch—TV news isn't a better presleep choice than TV series._37_.The bright light keeps you awake all night. So even if you nod off (in front of the TV,for example),you probably won't stay asleep for long.
Sleep with pets
_38_.They get comfortable, and then they move. This goes on all night, and whether you admit it or not,it interrupts your ability to get the level of sleep needed to feel rested.
Eat fatty, heavy foods when it is too close to bedtime
Heartburn strikes (侵袭) anyone of any age,but it's the most common GI disorder (胃肠失调) in older adults. If you've ever tried to go to sleep after eating a fatty meal, you've probably found the discomfort of your stomach preventing you from falling asleep or staying asleep.
_39_
Remember how poorly you sleep when you have a fever—turning over and over again, never really feeling rested?Well, heavy exercise too close to bedtime has the same effect—it raises your body temperature so that your sleep is disturbed until your body temperature drops to normal, which may take several hours.
Accept snoring (打呼噜) as normal sleep behavior
Snoring may seem as common as breathing, but it's considered the biggest sleep killer, and it's linked to several causes:sleeping on your back, being overweight, having a cold, drinking,or taking drugs._40_.For the snorer,it disturbs sleep by awakening him/her every so often in order to breathe normally. For the partner, the noise can be unbearable.
A.Lower your body temperature before bedtime
B.Here are some suggestions you'll need to follow
C.Rather it's the TV's bright light that is the criminal
D.Exercise heavily when it is too close to bedtime
E.Here are some bad habits you need to get rid of

The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two _41_ systems on the whole.
The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries:China and India. Both of the two cultures are gestated(孕育) by _42_.In China, the mother river is the Yellow River _43_ the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures had been developed for several thousand years before they _44_ their own styles. Then in the Tang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture _45_ went overseas to Japan,_46_ into the Japanese society and _47_ the Japanese culture nowadays.Though it's a bit different from the Chinese one, they belong to the same _48_.

When the colonists of England _53_ in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, the American culture doesn't _54_ from the European one a lot.
At the same time, the _55_ of the language systems adds to the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形文字的) languages while the Western languages are _56_ based on the Latin system, for example, the one I'm using to write this paper.
Other factors like human race difference _57_ as well.However,_58_ the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom _59_ until recent centuries._60_,they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no connection with each other.
