13. Frank Lloyd Wright was the champion of organic architecture, a style of building meant to harmonize with nature. But I’m not sure harmonizing with chipmunks — small American animals similar to squirrels with black lines on their fur — was what he had in mind.
During my years with the US National Park Service, I spent six months working in a visitor center designed by Wright’s firm. Several other employees and I staffed the park’s phone and radio system from a room in the basement.
I was sitting at my desk when I first heard a sound in the suspended ceiling. Dark shapes moved fast across the light panel (光板) above my head. Moments later, they ran back in the opposite direction, leaving me with an impression of noses and tails, each tail followed by another nose. It was like watching a shadow puppet (皮影) performance, but with real animals.
“Baby chipmunks,” a fellow told me. “They live in the ceiling.”
After four summers working in the parks, I had grown accustomed to sharing indoor space with wildlife. Chipmunks in the workplace even seemed to be a joy; their behaviors provided a bit of stress relief on difficult days.
As summer progressed, the shadows chasing each other across our lights grew bigger. Their movement across the light panels had become more of an athletic running.
I had just answered a call one day when I heard a loud sound, and a ceiling panel fell down on my head. I dropped the phone as I fell out of my office chair, looking up just in time to see a brown tail disappear over the gap in the ceiling.
I pulled myself off the carpet, laughing with my co-workers, and noticed the phone hanging over the side of the desk. I picked up the phone, preparing to explain the crash, the scream, the dropped phone, and the laughing to the listener who was about to visit the park.
“I’m sorry, but you’re not going to believe what just happened.”I don’t think he did.

D.The suspended ceiling was not firm.
5. Who was the author talking to over the phone?

印度商人Ashay Bhave找到了回收使用塑料袋的新方法——把塑料袋制成一种叫作ThaelyTex纤维,然后用这种纤维制作鞋子;这样,塑料袋得以回收利用,减少了对环境的污染。

14. Fashion designers are always looking for new materials to work with. Lately, it’s all about environment-friendly materials -- recycled tires, mushrooms, even pineapple fibers! What if you want such a pair of shoes? Thaely is here to help.
This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution. Led by 23-year-old Indian businessman Ashay Bhave, they may have found a winning approach: making shoes out of plastic grocery bags. “Thaely” means “plastic bag” in the Hindi language.
“I was looking to create footwear that is cost-effective and safe for the environment,” Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper. “I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste. ”Plastic bags were the perfect solution. He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year. “I was motivated to find a solution to this problem,” Bhave said.
That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex. Made entirely from plastic bags, the material looks and feels like leather. That sounds promising. Better yet, the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by-products. The result is a smart-looking pair of white low-top sneakers.
Bhave wouldn’t expose the full process for making ThaelyTex, but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles. Where do they get the materials? Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part. “The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags. ”
Finally, they got help from TrioTap Technologies, a waste management plant. Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.
So far, it seems like things are falling into place. There are already hundreds of pre-orders in place. It sounds like they have some plans for the future. “We have a few more colors coming up,” said Bhave. They also plan to put out a high-top model and bring in a line of clothing. Let’s hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.
1. Why did Bhave choose to make shoes out of plastic bags?
A.To set a new footwear trend.
B.To test new materials for footwear.
C.To reduce the use of plastic bags in his home country.
D.To use recycled plastic in an environment-friendly way.
2. What was the most difficult task for Bhave?
A.Having a few more colors for Thaely.B.Processing plastic bags into ThaelyTex.
C.Collecting enough production materials D.Dealing with many poisonous by-products
3. The underlined part“put out”in the last paragraph probably means__________.
A.produce B.conserve
C.provide D.broadcast
4. What can be the best title for this passage?
A.Bhave: a promising young man
B.Thaely: killer of waste plastic bags
C.ThaelyTex: material out of plastic bags
D.TrioTap Technologies: a waste management plant

主要介绍了无人驾驶汽车的工作原理,优点以及存在的问题。

15. Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Tech companies around the world have been designing and testing driverless vehicles and the technology is available already.
So, how do they work? The cars are covered in sensors that can detect other cars and obstacles on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used. Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information and processes this to work out when to accelerate, brake and steer. All you have to do is type in the destination.
Sounds like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film while “driving” will all be possible with this new technology. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions can be reduced. They also drive more safely than people—they don’t get distracted by music or friends, they obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
However, there are still many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers will have difficulties making ethical (道德上的) decisions. If a child ran out into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn aside sharply and potentially hurt the car’s passengers instead? Moreover, I personally find driving fun. I’d miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be legal questions. Should children or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, many people would be put out of a job by the popularization of driverless cars. Bus, taxi and train drivers would be made unwanted.
I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.
1. What do you need to do when using a driverless car?
A.Control the sensors.B.Read the road signs carefully.
C.Check the satellite navigation systems.D.Put the address into the computer.
2. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us about driverless cars?
A.Their emissions.B.Their advantages.
C.Their testing process.D.Their reaction to an emergency.
3. How does the author analyze the shortcomings of driverless cars?
A.By making a comparison.B.By analyzing their harmful effects.
C.By raising some questions.D.By sharing personal experiences.
4. What does the author think of future driverless cars?
A.They will be less expensive.B.They will consume less energy.
C.They will do more harm than good.D.They will be more strictly controlled.

16. It’s one of the ultimate tests of willpower: you’ve been wandering around the market for hours and you’re tired and hungry. Then you catch
a smell of something fragrant (香的) and delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. Junk food companies are well aware that the smell of their product sets off a desire in your brain and that you’ll pay for that later. It is a response that has been researched, and you’d better believe your favorite fast-food chains have marketing teams that are using that research to their advantage.
Let’s take a closer look at this process. Have you ever noticed that whatever indulgent food (放纵型食品) catches your attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? A couple of minutes later you are standing in line, and it isn’t quite inviting as it was just moments ago, but now you’ve invested time, so you trust your first feeling to treat yourself.
But a recent statement says that this is actually the right moment to walk away. Dipayan Biswas, a marketing professor, found there is a direct connection between how long a person is exposed to indulgent food smells and choosing healthier foods. “The results of a series of experiments show that extended exposure of more than two minutes to junk food smells leads to fewer purchases of unhealthy foods compared with no smell or a non-junk-food-related smell,” reads the summary of his study.
What appears to be going on here is that the brain doesn’t necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell and a pleasant taste. “Extended exposure to an indulgent food smell brings pleasure in the mind, which in turn reduces the desire for actual consumption of indulgent foods,” he
explains. So next time you feel you don’t have the willpower to resist cookies, smell all that sweetness for just a minute or two. To your brain it’s the same as actually eating cookies, and the purchase desire would decrease.
1. What can we learn about junk food smells from the first paragraph?
A.They can make a difference in marketing.
B.They hardly affect people’s food choices.
C.They are unlikely to fool wise customers.
D.They finally decrease people’s purchase desire.
2. What does the second paragraph basically serve as?
A.An argument.B.An example.C.A comparison.D.A comment.
3. Which statement will Biswas probably agree with?
A.The brain can’t tell where sensory pleasure is from.
B.The senses of taste and smell are closely linked.
C.The influence of food smells changes over time.
D.The behavior of smelling food doesn’t equal eating it.
4. Which of the following could the best title for the text?
A.Train Your Brain to Resist Junk Food
B.Watch Out for Tricky Marketing Tools
C.Food Addiction Is Never About Willpower
D.Smelling Junk Food Longer Can Keep You Off It
