2024 Jiangsu Province College Entrance Examination English Test
Part I Reading Comprehension (30 points)
Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage 1
One of the problems for towns in the Industrial Revolution was that they grew too quickly. They did not have enough schools, health clinics or houses. People did not have time or money to build enough roads, bridges or places of worship. The worst problem, however, was that towns did not have places to keep rubbish. As a result, people often threw pots of water containing urine(尿液) and faeces (粪便) out of their windows and not always in the direction of the street. To be sure, some towns did have bylaws (地方法令) to stop people from throwing away rubbish in the street. There was mid-nineteenth-century Cheltenham, in southwest England. But even in places like
