Teaching Plan for Module 1 (SEFC Book 2)
The Second Period, Vocabulary and Reading: “Zhou Kai (1)”and “Zhou Kai
(2)”
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Language Objectives
Important words and phrases:
Fresh fruit, vegetable, fish, fat, sugar, sweets, have a sweet tooth, diet, catch a cold, fever, flu, exercise, injury, fit, playing football.
2. Ability Objectives
(1) Enable students to predict the passage according to the background information;
(2) Enable students to learn to skim passages for main ideas and to scan for specific details;
(3) Enable students to express, communicate, cooperate and self-think.
3. Moral Objectives
(1) Help students to learn that it is important for us to choose healthy food;
(2) Help students to develop their own healthy diet;
(3) Help students to develop the habit of exercise.
II. Important Points
1. Master two important reading skills—skimming and scanning;
2. To analyze passages and find out the relationship of two passages. III. Difficult Points
1. How to analyze the text and grasp the main idea of the text;
2. How to skim the supported idea of each paragraph;
3. How to scan passage 2 to find specific information to answer questions. IV. Teaching Methods
1. Task-based Language Teaching: Silent reading, Reading aloud, Fast reading, Skimming and Scanning; and Communicative Language Teaching: Asking and Answering, Discussing.
2. Teaching Aids: a projector and a computer, a blackboard.
V. Teaching Procedures
Step I Preview (5 minutes)
1. Ask the students move to activity 1 on page
2. Then ask them to
read words for 2 times.
T: Today we’ll continue our class: Our Body and Healthy Habits.
Before our new class, let’s turn to page 2 and review the words
of activity 1. Read each word for 2 times.
S:
2. Ask students to answer questions bellow the vocabulary box.
T: Ok, now there are 5 questions bellow the vocabulary box for you.
I’ll give you 2 minutes to finish them. Clear
S: Yes.
T: Ok, let’s go.
3. Check the answers 2 minutes later.
Step II Pre-reading of passage 1 (5minutes)
1. Ask some questions.
T: I’ll ask some questions. Do you like doing sports
S: Yes/No.
T: Do you like playing football
S: Yes/No.
T: I know some people like playing football very much. Can you
imagine how crazy they are
S: No.
2. Show a picture on the PPT.
T: Ok, there is a picture. Now look at it and observe it carefully.
What are you seeing
S: There is a man. He is playing football. It’s raining.
T: Good. There is a man who is playing football in the raining. Can
you guess what will happen to him
S: He may get ill.
T: Yes, he may get a bad cold. Today we’ll study a boy who also loves
playing football. One day, when he was going to play football in the
rain, his mother saw him. Do you know what happened between them
S: His mother might stop him.
T: Right. His mother stopped him and gave him some suggestions. Ok,
now look at the passage. Let’s study this story in detail.
Step III While-reading of passage 1 (5minutes)
Ask 2 students to read words of Zhou Kai and Zhou Kai’s mother respectively.
T: Now I need 2 students to read words of Zhou Kai and Zhou Kai’s mother respectively. I’ll read the rest part. Who would like to try S:
Step IV Post-reading of passage1 (3minutes)
Ask students to finish activity 2.
1. Show all the three questions of passage 1 on the PPT, and read
them one by one. Then ask students to read passage 1 with these
questions.
T: Now look at these questions, and think about them. (1) Why is Zhou
Kai’s mother anxious (2)What does she think will happen (3) What
does she ask him to do Now, read passage 1 with these questions, and
then you’ll be asked to answer these questions. Now, begin.
2. 2 minutes later, ask students to speak out their answers together,
and then check the answers.
T: Ok, time is up. Have you found out the answers
S:
T: Ok, great. Why is Zhou Kai’s mother anxious
S:
T: Yes, because she saw Zhou Kai heading towards the front door
without a jacket on. How about the second question What does she think
will happen
S:
T: Yes, she thinks Zhou Kai will catch a bad cold. Then, what does she ask him to do
S:
T: Yes, she asks him to get his jacket. You’ve done a good job. Then,
let’s move to passage 2 and learn more about Zhou Kai.
Step V Pre-reading of passage 2 (5 minutes)
Skimming of passage 2
1. Show 3 subtitles on the PPT. They are: a. Zhou Kai’ hobby; b.
Zhou Kai’s family has a healthy diet; c. Zhou Kai is quite healthy
and seldom gets sick. Then ask students to put them in right order
after reading passage 2.
T: Before our reading, let’s look at the PPT. There are 3 subtitles.
They are: a. Zhou Kai’ hobby; b. Zhou Kai’s family has a healthy
diet; c. Zhou Kai is quite healthy and seldom gets sick. I’ll give
you 2 minutes. Now read quickly, and then give me the right order.
Let’s go.
2. Check the answer about 2 minutes later.
T: Ok, have you finished
S: Yes.
T: What’ your answer
S: b, c, a.
T: Very good, you are right. Now let’s look at each paragraph together.
Step VI While-reading of passage 2 (8 minutes)
Analyze the passage paragraph by paragraph, and then give a form to help students understand details.
Step VII Post-reading of passage 2 (4 minutes)
Finish activity 4
(1) Ask students to read passage 2 again, and then finish activity
4.
T: Now look at activity 4. Read passage 2 again, and then finish
activity 4. Now, begin.
(2) Ask students to give their answers.
T: Ok, have you finished
S: Yes.
T: Who would like to share your answer to the first question Any volunteer

T: Ok, sit please. Do you agree with him/her

T: Yes, he/she is right. Why don’t you choose the second answer
……
Step VIII Post-reading of 2 passages (7 minutes)
Comprehensive question
(1)Give students 3 minutes to read passage 1 and passage 2, and then
let them answer the first question that is shown on the PPT: How
are passage 1 and 2 connected Then ask 2 students to answer it.
T: Now, I give you 3 minutes to read these two passages, and think
over the question: How are passage 1 and 2 connected Then I’ll ask
you to share your ideas.
(2)3 minutes later ask students to state their answers.
T: Ok, have you got ideas Who would like to be the first volunteer
Please raise your hand.
S:
T: Good. Sit down please. Do you have other answers
S:
T: Well done. Sit down, please. Their answer is nearly all-around.
We can see these 2 passages are connected by 3 aspects. Both passages
mention that Zhou Kai’ mother looks after Zhou Kai and that Zhou
Kai loves playing football very much. Besides, the second passage
mentions that Zhou Kai seldom gets colds but last time he had a bad
cold for he played football in the rain last week. We can find the
details in the passage 1.
Step IX Summary (2 minutes)
Summarize the content of this class.
T: Today, at the very beginning of our class, we have reviewed the
words learned last class and took relative exercises to consolidate
these words. I hope you to remember them regularly after class, ok
S: Ok.
T: Then we have learned 2 passages. These two passages talks about
the lifestyle of Zhou Kai. We learned the main idea of each passage
and studied details by analyzing passages and answering questions.
We spend much time in passage 2. Now let’s look at PPT and have
a brief look at the details of this passage.
Step X Homework (1 minute)
1. Find difficult language points;
2. Make a composition about students’opinion on Zhou Kai’s
lifestyle.
T: Now, listen carefully. There is homework for you. For the first
one is to read these 2 passages again and find difficult language
points. We’ll deal with them next class. For the second one is to
write a composition about your opinion on Zhou Kai’s lifestyle.
If you think Zhou Kai has a healthy lifestyle, you should give your
reason; if not, give your reason, too.
