In America, when people say “man’s best friend”,

talking about a lovely animal—a dog! These words
show the friendship between people and animals.
Dogs and other pets can give joy to people. Some
people think of their pets as their c 1 . Some
people even leave all their money to their pets when
they die.
Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be
taught to be the “eyes” for a b 2 person or “ears” for a deaf person. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people h 3 , too. Because of that, Americans love their pets very much. They even take they pets to the special hospital when they are ill.
Americans hold “Be Kind to Animals Week” in the first week of May. Pet shows are held during the week. Even if you don’t live in A 4 , you can do this too. How? First think about how animals make your life happier. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. R 5 to give it delicious food.
If you don’t have a pet, be k 6 to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, just leave it alone, or make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to animals, try to s 7 it. As animals’ best friends, we must protect them.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题)7%
Animals have been a part of people's lives for thousands of years. They have been a source(来源)of food, tools, and shelter. Perhaps the greatest thing animals have done for man is to be honest friends. There is something special about the connection(联系)between man and animals. It can be seen when children play with their pets or when a police officer trusts his life to the dog at his side. For most people, seeing a little puppy playing in a clumsy(笨拙地)way makes their hearts melt. Unluckily, some people do not understand animals, their feelings, or why they also deserve respect.
Many people are cruel to animals. Every year, millions of animals are killed by people just for fun. Animals in these situations need heroes, and luckily, they have them. One of them is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Known as
the ASPCA, it was founded in 1866 in New York City. It is the first and oldest organization for animal protection in the US. Henry Bergh, an ASPCA officer, works to stop cockfighting and change the way animals were treated in slaughterhouses(屠宰场). He says that even though some animals were used for food, they should not be treated cruelly. Today, the ASPCA has done a lot for animals. Together, they make sure animals are getting everything they need to lead happy and healthy lives.
