I received a private message on Meta.It began harmlessly enough:“Hey,girl.Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much.Meta was running my life, not me.
But what killed Meta for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got.His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval.I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad eeta, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines.I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier ey son,I deactivated my Meta account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Meta many times a day,so I had to come up with some new habits.I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me.I rediscovered knitting.I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is.I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out.I do my best to be a good mother, and our son
is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone.I felt completely present in the moment.
The break left me feeling better about myself,my family,my home and my life.
After a few weeks,I returned to Meta. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids gro wing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide.I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.
It is not an addiction any more.

Recently I read NineteenEighty-Four,a novel by George Orwell set in a state where even the language they use is
controlled.Adjectives are forbidden and instead they use phrases such as ‘ungood’,‘plus good’ and ‘double plus good’ to eotions. As I first read this I thought how impossible it would be in our society to have such vocabulary. However, the more I thought about it,the more I realised in its o wn way it’s already
happening.I type messages to my friends and alongside each is the emoji.I often use it to emphasise something,or to not seem too serious,or because this specific GIF conveys my emotions much better than I ever could using just words. And I wonder, with our eojis, are we losing the beauty and diversity of our vocabulary?
English has the largest vocabulary in the world, with over one million words, but who’s to say what it’ll be like in the future?Perhaps we will have a shorter language, full of saying “cry face” if something sad happens or using abbreviations(缩写) like LOL(laugh out loud) or BRB(be right back) instead of saying the full phrase. So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink? Is it the start of an exciting new era? Will they look back on us in the future and say this is where it all began—the new language?Or is this a classic case of the older generations saying,“Things weren’t like that when I was younger. We didn’t use emoticons to show our emotions”?
Yet when you look back over time, the power of image has always been there.Even in the prehistoric era they used imagery to communicate, and what’s even more incredible is that we are able
to analyse those drawings and understand the meaning of them thousands of years later.Pictures have the ability to transcend time and language.Images,be it cave paintings or emojis, allow us to convey a message that’s not restrictive but rather universal.
5.Why does the author mention NineteenEight-Four?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To show an example.
C.To give the reason.
D.To describe a phenomenon.
6.Why does the author like using emojis?
A.To reduce the use of words.
B.To save time of typing.
C.To eake fun of friends.
7.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “shrink” in paragraph 2?
A.Disappear.
B.Reduce.
C.Lower.
D.Change.
8.What will the author agree with?
A.Emojis will destroy the variety of our vocabulary.
B.Emojis will replace English as the most popular language.
C.Emojis are useless and meaningless in modern life.
D.Emojis will not restrict our communication.

Scientists and spiritual teachers alike agree that the simple act of smiling can transform you and the world around you.It can make us appear more attractive to others. 1 So before you read on,slap a nice, genuine smile on that face of yours.
HowSmilingAffectsYourBrain
The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness. For starters, smiling activates the release of neuropeptides(神经肽) that work toward fighting off stress. The feel-good neurotransmitters(神经介质) are all released when a smile flashes across your face as well. 2
HowSmilingAffectsYourBody
You’re actually better-looking when you smile.A study published in the journal Neuropsychologia reported that seeing an
attractive, smiling face activates the region in your brain that processes sensory rewards. 3 It also explains the findings by researchers at the Face Research Laboratory. They found that both men and women were more attracted to images of people who made eye contact and smiled than those who did not.
4
Did you know that your smile is actually contagious(传染性的)?In a Swedish study, subjects were shown pictures of several emotions:joy, anger and surprise. When the picture of someone smiling was presented, the researchers asked the subjects to frown.Instead, they found that the facial expressions went directly to what subjects saw. 5 If they don’t,they’re making a conscious effort not to.
A.How Smiling Affects Those Around You
B.Each time you smile, you throw a little feel-good party in your brain.
C.So if you’re smiling at someone,it’s likely that they can’t help but smile back.
D.And it can even lengthen our lives.
E.How Smiling Affects Your Facial Expressions
F.They not only relax your body, but also lower your heart rate and blood pressure.
G.This suggests that when you view a person smiling, you actually feel rewarded.
