二、阅读理解
If some parts of a body are very sick or damaged, then doctors might need to remove them. Another way doctors can help is to grow new tissue to replace what is sick or damaged. This is called regenerative medicine (再生医学).
Regenerative medicine sounds like something from a science fiction movie but it is not a new idea. Inside our bones, we have something called ‘marrow’, which makes our blood and keeps us healthy. Doctors have been giving sick people the bone marrow from other healthy people for the last 30 or 40 years, and this is a kind of regenerative medicine.
Newer developments in regenerative medicine include growing new skin in a laboratory and using it to help people who have been hurt in fires or accidents. Another example of regenerative medicine is a technique developed from studying frogs and mice. When cells are old, like in adults, they can’t change what they do in our bodies. For example, a skin cell can’t change into an eye cell. But when cells are very young, they can become any cell type. These young cells are called stem cells, and doctors can use them to grow any type of tissue, such as skin, heart or eye. John Gurdon and
Shinya Yamanaka won the 2012 Nobel Prize for their studies in this area. Professor Fiona Watt, from the Centre of Regenerative Medicine at King’s College, London, believes that regenerative medicine is so exciting because many different kinds of experts need to work together. 3D printers may be used to print new bones by experts, who need to work closely with university scientists and the surgeons who do the operations in hospitals.
We can not yet grow new arms or legs for people, but the science fiction dream of regenerative medicine may be closer than we think. Perhaps in the future, doctors will be able to grow whole new bodies for us.
21.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to help very sick or damaged people.
B. Regenerative medicine and science fiction.
C. We can grow our new bodies in the future.
D. Regenerative medicine and its development.

A. Marrow can help grow new bones.
B. Stem cell can be used to grow any type of tissue.
C. Surgeons now use 3D printers to print new bones.
D. Regenerative medicine is a new science in medicine.
23.What’s the writer’s attitude to the development in regenerative medicine? A. Pessimistic. B. Optimistic.
C. Doubtful.
D. Indifferent.
Throughout the past few years, I have tried to give myself to others. I have bounced around to find where I truly fit in. I found my place while I stayed in Guatemala, an orphanage (孤儿院),with the children living there. Through hearing many stories of their lives, I was moved to tears and started to question my living ways and gave up everything that wasn’t essential: makeup and any other sort of luxury (奢侈品).
I lived like they did. It was the most relaxing feeling in the world.
When at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, we were given the task of creating a pig pen.
At first, I thought it should be easy. After arriving at the area where the pig pen should be, we saw a hill. We were told to uproot the weeds as well as level the entire area. Looking at it, we felt it would be impossible. On my own faith journey, I have felt this type of doubt before. The “hole”, as we referred to, is a symbol of my faith journey. It appeared to be an obstacle I could not overcome, but in the end I completed it with efforts. I feel this pig pen wasn’t easy to create but was so rewarding to give.
I’ve always struggled to be on a journey of faith, but I’ve never completely stepped foot onto the path until Guatemala. I’ve always tried to open my heart to everyone around me and give them my love. I feel as though I cut open my heart and share every bit of love I had with these orphans. There is one orphan named Ceto who will always remain very close to my heart. In Guatemale, I sponsor with thirty dollars a month, but it doesn’t seem enough. I’ll return there next summer and give more of my love for a whole month.
When it was time to leave, I looked out of the window and saw not just ordinary children. Overall, the most significant accomplishment I made in Guatemala was stepping towards my own faith journey and not looking back.
24.What resulted in the author’s decision to live a new life?
A. Desire to help others.
B. Decrease in his income.
C. A knowledge of the orphans’ life.
D. Awareness of the difficulty in his life.
25.What does the underlined word“it”in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Removing the doubt.
B. Uprooting the weed.
C. Starting the faith journey.
D. Creating the pig pen.
26.What did the author think of his experience in Guatemala?
A. It was regretful.
B. It was meaningful.
C. It was interesting.
D. It was frightening.
27.What may be the best title for the text?
A. A Step into a New World
B. An Awful Faith Journey
C. A Great Success in Life
D. A Return of Confidence
A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class disc ussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s cla ss, Bina48 expressed a desire to go college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple —it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working artificial intelligence in future. Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates
were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.
28.What was Bina48’s performance like in class?
A. Extraordinary.
B. Insignificant.
C. Far-reaching.
D. Unattractive.
29.What does the underlined word “addressing” in par agraph 3 probably mean? A. Dealing with. B. Consulting with.
C. Giving a speech to.
D. Sending a letter to.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A. It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.
B. It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.
C. Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
D. Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
31.What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?
A. It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.
B. It will be able to promote learning and teaching.
C. It will completely take the place of instructors.
D. It will be smart enough to control human beings.
The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive
species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers. The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging peop le to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not n early enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

Most of these apps allow users to take a photo of our schoolwork and the correct answers will just appear on their smartphones. Convenient they are, these apps present problems with both parents and teachers. Most students just copy the answers from the app, while only a few use the app to study. Better still, some students even use the study aid apps as social networks. Therefore, this isn’t to say that study aid apps should be completely ban. Parents and teach ers should give necessary guidance to help students to take the advantage of the study aid apps’ strengths and avoiding their weaknesses.

63.Dear Tony,
I am glad to hear that you are extremely interested in Chinese culture, especially
Traditional Chinese Medicine. The TCM, as an important part of Chinese culture, has been attracting attention from all over the world.
The TCM, with its unique diagnostic methods—look, listen, question and feel the pulse, long history and remarkable effects, has been used to treat cancer and other serious diseases. Unlike the western medicine, the TCM has fewer side effects. Above all, compared with high fees of the western medicine, the TCM has a more reasonable price that ordinary people can afford.
In a word, the TCM has made great contributions to the development of Chinese health care. Welcome to learn about it.
Yours truly,
Li Hua。
