People in the United States honor their parents with 2 special days: Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May and Father’s Day on the 3rd Sunday in June. These days are to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home and more fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On mother’s Day, people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It’s also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(grave). On these days families get together at home as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecue for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are more valued than those bought in stores. It’s not the value of
the gift that is important, but “the thought that counts〞. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakers, phone companies and other stores do lots of business during these holidays.

American cities are similar to other cities around the world. In every country, cities reflect the values of the culture. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing. After World War II, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Belt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population shifts〔转移〕to and from the city reflect the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, city residents〔居民〕became wealthier. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They
bought houses in the suburbs〔郊区〕。

Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults. Many, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals are moving back into the city. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. Countless poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s , many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities. Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying . Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again.
59.What does the author think of cities all over the world?
A.They are alive.
B. They are hopeless.
C. They are similar.
D.They are different.
60. Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War II?
A. Because older American cities were dying.
B. Because they were richer and needed more space.
C.Because cities contained the worst parts of society.
D. Because they could hardly afford to live in the city.
61.According to the 4th paragraph, a great many poor people in American cities .
A.are faced with housing problems.
B. are forced to move to the suburbs.
C.want to sell their buildings.
D. need more money for daily expenses.
62. We can conclude from the text that .
A.American cities are changing for the worse.
B.people have different views on American cities.
C.many people are now moving from American cities.
D.the population is decreasing in older American cities.

Many people set a goal to make a change in their life, but not everyone knows how to achieve it. The following practical tips on goal setting can help make it easier to set and reach goals to make a change in your life.
63 when it comes to making a change, people who succeed are those who set realistic and specific goals. “ I’m going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines〞 is a much easier goal than “ I’m going to do more for the environment〞, And that makes it easier to stick with.
Being patient is important. It takes time for a change to become an established habit. 64 . That’s because your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you’re doing is part of your regular routine. So you should have enough practice.
Repeating a goal makes it stick. 65 By doing this you can remind yourself of what you want and what you’re working for. (Writing it down works too) Every time you remind yourself of your
goal, you’re training your brain to make it happen.
66 The key to making any change is to find the desire within yourself- you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend coach, parent, or someone else wants you to.
Roadblocks don't mean failure. Slip- ups are actually part of the learning process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking. 67 But that’s OK. It’s normal to mess up or give up a few times when you are trying to make a change. So remember that everyone slips up and don't beat yourself up about it. Just remind your-self to get back on track.
A. Pleasing other people doesn’t work
B. Say your goal out loud each morning
C. Specific and realistic goals work best
D. It may take a few tries to reach a goal
E. You can achieve your goals in many ways
F. It will probably take a couple of months before anything changes
G. If you don’t know what you want, you will never achieve your goals
