Work over Operations Control for Oil Wells Radiation Identification and Control for Oil Wells
1. Introduction
1.1 Objective:
To provide safe systems of work when handling equipment potentially contaminated with NORM during well re-entry operations with work-over or drilling rigs.
1.2 Scope:
This procedure shall apply to all well re-entry operations carried out by drilling or work-over rigs.
All wells, which have been previously active (not new wells), shall be considered NORM contaminated unless demonstrated otherwise by measurements using the correct meters.
2.Responsibility
2.1 Drilling Rig Supervisor / Company-Man:
The Drilling Supervisor shall supervise the re-entry work and is responsible for the activation and
Implementation of this procedure.
2.2 ESP Service Provider Representative:
The ESP service provider representative is responsible for radiation and contamination measurements under advice from the Drilling Supervisor at the rig site. The radiation meter should be calibrated.
2.3 Drilling Engineer:
The Drilling Engineer shall include the radiation measurements procedure in the well re-entry program.
2.4 Rig Tool Pusher:
The Rig Tool Pusher shall supervise the re-entry work and is responsible for the activation and implementation of this procedure.
3. Assessment Criteria for NORM Management:
Requirement for the NORM Classified Area: The personnel working in the NORM classified areas to follow the specific requirements that are provided below:

Conclusion:
∙KOC Drilling Supervisor to ensure ESP service provider representative is on location before POOH. Also to ensure that the radiation meter is calibrated.
∙Rig on standby until ESP service provider are mobilized the radiation meter and readings are recorded properly at hanger level to ensure no crew is unnecessarily exposed.
∙Radiation levels have to be checked by the pump contractor from the tubing hanger level, prior to POOH.
∙While Pulling Out the tubing: the ESP service provider representative shall measure the first five tubular pulled at the pin end.
a)If no NORM, detected, measure every 5 tubular. Continue measuring for NORM at
regular intervals. If still no NORM is found, then the work continues with no NORM
precautions.
b)If NORM is found above the acceptable limits (above 0.24 μSv/hr), STOP POOH
activities, The senior drilling engineer of the rig which has radiation issues has to call
Lotus representatives (Mr. Chris mobile # 98812554) to come to the rig, and measure the
radiation level themselves to make the decision whether to continue pulling out the ESP,
or to RIH the existing completion and release the rig. Then, the assigned rig for industrial
waste wells project will take over the well re-entry operation.
NOTE: in case if there is only contaminated ESP for the operation to be completed, and
the rig crew is willing to help the LOTUS experts in dismantling the ESP, then the
contaminated ESP will be dismantled without any problem.。
