2. When Shannon and I heard about jobs available on a farm nearby, we immediately asked Ian to drive us there. How awesome! Before long we would be picking strawberries, working in the fresh air and mainly we’d be making our own money!
As we drove through Blairgowire, along the riverside, traveling in the direction of the farm, we went past some very large old brick buildings. These, long ago, had been mills (制造厂). The local people made cloth for thousands of years. Today all of these mills are shut and only a few of the huge, old buildings remain as museums. What I love about travelling in England is that you get brief information of history wherever you go.
But we did not have time that day to explore this important part of our history and heritage. We were headed straight to our new jobs.
Blairgowire had a thriving industry producing soft fruit. Picking soft fruit has to be done by hand and so berry pickers are needed, and this is where we would fit in! We pulled up at West Haugh Farm hopeful of finding our place there.
We were greeted by a friendly farm manager.“We’re signing up workers right now. We are going to have a busy season. Just in time you are as we like all our workers to be booked by the end of April, and we still have some places to fill. It’s ________ work though. You have to work the whole season; at least five days a week or even six.”
“No problem. Work has never scared us and we need the money, ” Shannon said.
I asked, “Can we stay from tonight? We’re kind of in a difficult situation.”“Tonight? No, ladies, ” he laughed.“We’re still months from picking. It’s barely past Easter, and harvest is at the end of summer. Some picking starts in July, but the bulk(大部分)is done from August to the end of October. We have some forms to fill out and I can see you back then.”
While our hearts sank, we put on brave faces. We filled out and signed many pages of
paperwork and promised we’d b e back.
(1)Why were the two friends too eager to land jobs?________
A.They liked to connect with nature.
B.They could have a tight budget.
C.They tried to dump Ian.
D.They wanted to explore further.
(2)What can we infer from the writer’s travels?________
A.Blairgowire developed food industry to replace the dying textiles industry.
B.She was interested in nothing but the history of England.

A muscled guy in an undershirt tightens a big bolt(螺丝)with his wrench(扳手); a farm worker bends almost in half, filling his sack with cotton; Rosie the riveter(铆工)rolls up her sleeve to tackle her factory job. They’re all part of an exhibition called “The S weet of Their Face: Portraying(描绘)American Workers”.
But not all the laborers are big and strong. A lonely young girl ﹣she can’t be more than 11or 12 ﹣ stands, alone, before an enormous machine. She had a job in 1908 at the Lancaster Cotton Mills in South Carolina.
Dorothy Moss, one of the organizers says, “Hine put himself at risk to take these pictures, and, with the camera as witness, reforms and regulations were enacted.”
This exhibition showcases centuries of American workers. They are, as Moss says, “the people who were building this country, who may be on the sidelines. But artists take workers into focus of our attention.”
In this century, Ramiro Gomez deletes the man and inserts a cleaning woman in his version of David H ockney’s Man in Shower in Beverly Hills:we can’t see her face ﹣ just her hands squeegeeing(使用橡胶扫帚)the shower tiles.
A food worker in a Subway sandwich store gets the full treatment from photographer Shauna Frischkorn. She puts him against a black background, and lights his face to look sculptural. The black and green Subway cap sits on his red hair like a crown.
“She’s restoring his humanity through the pose and lighting.” Moss says.
John Neagle’s 1829 portrait of Pat Lyon shows a blacksmith at his anvil(铁砧). In real life, Pat Lyon later became a wealthy businessman. Yet the painter shows him sweating at his anvil, at Lyon’s request.
Workers of the world﹣well, the United States, anyway﹣unite at this Portrait Gallery exhibition.“‘The Sweat of Their Face’ reminds visitors of the range of vital work ________ do﹣and the ways we feel about it.”

4. The original challenge of making a fire with a coke can and a chocolate bar came from a survival exercise that focuses on seeing what one can accomplish with the stuff that one might happpen to have or something near at hand.
Let’s get a coke can first. None that its bottom has a slightly dull finish. Close up, the fine lines on the can indicate a small degree of surface roughness which limits the can’s reflectivity. These scatter the sun’s rays, and prevent them from being focused together into a single bright point.
That’s where the chocolate bar comes in. For polishing the can, one needs the wrapper (or something else). The process is to rub some chocolate on the bottom, then use the wrapper (or whatever) as a cloth to do the polishing. Mind you, other polishing agents will work as well, such as toothpaste, power cleaners, fine steel wool, which give much more rapid results. You need about a quarter of an hour.Jewerer’s rouge(胭脂)will get the bottom to a mirror finish in a few minutes. Chocolate at best would take half an hour.
On a sunny day, hold a piece of suitable lighter, such as a piece of fungus(真菌), at the focal(焦点的)point of the can botom﹣about 1﹣1.25" away from the center of the “bowl”.
One doesn’t need to use fungus. To face up to a little more challenge, one can use pieces of the chocolate wrapper to replace it. It takes a bit longer with the wrapper﹣but, as with a magnifying glass, many things can be used.
It is important to adapt the bottom of the can toward the sun so that the light gathering will be perfect.
To make sure that you are finding the best focal point, try using some black newsppaer. Take a small strip, and move it towards the focal points. As you move the
paper in and out, you should be able to see the light gather to a small point. At this
time, the newspaper should start to smoke.
(1)What message is to be conveyed by explaining the method of making a fire in the text?________
A.Coke and chocolate are readily available.
B.People go for more challenge.
C.People need survival skills.
D.The method builds a sense of accomplishment.
(2)Why does the bottom of coke can need polishing?________
A.Polishing gets the bottom to amirror finish.
B.The lines on the bottom to a mirror finish.
C.Polishing makes the focused rays through the bottom.
D.Polished bottom scatters and reflects light well.
(3)Which is the best polish acccording to Paragraph 3?________
A.Toothpaste.
B.Rouge.
C.Powder cleaners.
D.Fine steel wool.
(4)What’s the real purpose of suggesting black newspaper in actually making a fire?

A.To conduct an interesting experiment.
