International students seeking a medical degree in the United States face serious difficulties.
First, there is often a language barrier. Students from non-English speaking countries could have a hard time understanding their work or communicating with professors.
Also, a medical education is very costly. First, students must complete an undergraduate degree (本科学历). Then, most medical schools require at least four years of study. After medical school, students do at least three more years of training in their specific medical fields. They do receive some pay for this work.
In addition, many medical programs at public universities in the U.S. do not accept international students. And private universities have fewer openings, creating a great deal of competition.
However, receiving a medical education in the U.S. is not impossible. Fatima Ismail is proof. The 32-year-old from Dubai says she knew she wanted to be a doctor at a very early age.
“I was always fascinated by the brain and how it functions. And I love working with children. There is a huge population of children with developmental disabilities
that are not taken care of very well in Middle East in general and my home country, in particular.”
So, Ismail completed medical school in her home country. Then, she applied to a residency (住院实习) program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Ismail spent time as an exchange student at Johns Hopkins during her time in medical school.
She says many of her fellow students applied to more than 10 or even 20 different programs.
“It’s a very competitive process. Being an international medical school graduate you ... have less chances to be accepted because the priority would be for the U.S. graduates. Having said that, it’s not impossible. All that you need to do is, basically, early planning...”
Planning is highly important for foreign students seeking admission to U.S. medical schools. Paul White is the director for medical school admissions at Johns Hopkins. He says some schools do accept students with undergraduate degrees from their home countries. But most, he says, require U.S. study.
“So we say we want to see at least one year of additional coursework in any area in the U.S. just so we can see the kinds of courses they are capable of taking and how well they may perform in those courses. And there’s no question that if they do well in the U.S., and they do well on the medical college’s admissions test, then they’ll be eligible (合格的) for admission...”
58. Fatima Ismail is cited as an example to ______.
A. show the possibility of being accepted as a medical major in the U.S.
B. discourage students from applying for medical schools in the U.S.
C. share with readers her enthusiasm for medical education
D. show her terrible living conditions in her own county
59. What may increase applicants’ chance of being accepted by U.S. medical school?
A. One’s money status.
B. A strong character.
C. Early planning.
D. More applications.
60. According to Paul White, why do most medical schools require U.S. study?
A. To prepare applicants for medical college admission test.
B. To test applicants’ competence as a medical major.
C. To urge applicants to apply for residency program.
D. To relieve the pressure of international students.

I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am A Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother.
Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife?
I’d like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent.
I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And meanwhile take care of my children.
I want a wife who is a good nurturing attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, etc.
I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of course, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wife’s income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working.
I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after me. I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced, and who will see to it that my personal things are kept in their proper place so that I can find what I need the minute I need it. I want a wife who will plan the menus, do the necessary grocery shopping, prepare the meals, serve them pleasantly, and then do the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school.
...
If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life; my wife will take the children and be solely (单独地) responsible for them so that I am left free.
When I am through with school and have a job, I want my wife to quit working and remain a t home so that my wife can more fully and completely take care of a wife’s duties.
My God, who wouldn’t want a wife?
61. Why does the author want a wife?
A. To follow in the footstep of the male friend.
B. To forget about the past marriage.

62. According to the passage, a wife should ______.
A. bear all the responsibilities in a family

C. become economically independent
D. quit working and remain at home
63. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How to be a good wife.
B. A wife’s responsibilities.
C. A wife’s status in a family.
D. Complaints of being a wife.
64. The author wrote this article in a/ an ______ tone.
A. poetic

Until recently, scientists and authors were at absolute disagreement over the point of crying. In King Henry VI, Shakespeare wrote, “to weep is to make less the depth of grief”, and the American writer Lemony Snicket said “unless you have been
very, very lucky, you know that a good, long session of weeping can often make you feel better, even if your circumstances have not changed one bit”.
Charles Darwin, on the other hand, thought that the production of tears was merely a useless side effect of the way that the muscles around the eye worked. For him, those muscles had to contract (收缩) from time to time so that they didn’t overflow with blood; the squeeze of tears was simply an unintended consequence of that evolved physiological process. He did acknowledge that crying could help young infants attract the attention of their parents, though.
We now know that crying – at least, the sort that adults do – is a complex physiological response to some kind of emotional stimulus(刺激). The most noticeable feature is of course the shedding of tears, but it also includes changes in facial expressions and breathing patterns.
From a scientific perspective, crying is different from the production of tears in response to a chemical irritant, like when you accidentally rub your eyes after eating spicy foods. Even the tears themselves are different. In 1981, Minnesota psychiatrist William H Frey II discovered that tears brought on by sad movies had more protein in them than those that flowed in response to some freshly chopped onions.
As anyone who has attended a side-splitting comedy act or listened to a groom read wedding vows to his bride, emotional tears aren’t limited to feelings of melancholy (愁思). But while all of us are familiar with the feelings that are associated with crying, whether for joy or sorrow, there’s not much that’s known about why we do it as adults – but there are plenty of ideas.
One idea is that adult crying isn’t actually all that dif ferent from the sort that babies do, at least when it comes to its social nature. In other words, perhaps weeping is a literal cry for attention, a means of soliciting support and help from our friends when we need it the most. It’s a way of communicating our inner emotional state at a time when we may not be able to fully articulate (清晰地表达) it.
While this may explain some forms of crying, many researchers have found that adults often cry when they’re completely alone. Another possibility that is that cryin g might serve as a means of “secondary appraisal,” helping people to realise
just how upset they are, a way of helping them understand their own feelings –it’s a provocative idea, with at least some evidence to support it, in some cases.
And then there’s the notion of catharsis: crying provides for relief from emotionally stressful situations. The idea is consistent not only with the words of Shakespeare, but with the Roman poet Ovid, who wrote: “It is a relief to weep; grief is satisfied and carried off b y tears.” The Greek philosopher Aristotle also wrote that crying “cleanses the mind”. In a 1986 study of popular US magazines and newspapers, one psychologist found that 94% of articles about crying suggested that it helped to relieve psychological tension.
Indeed, a 2008 study of nearly 4,300 young adults from 30 countries found that most reported improvements in both their mental and physical wellbeing after a bout of crying, but not all. Some reported no change after a crying session, and some even said that they felt worse afterwards.
The difference seems to lie in the social context: if a person felt embarrassed about crying in public, for example, they might feel less resolved than if they cried alone or with a single close friend. The study also found that when people tried to suppress or hide their crying, they also wound up feeling less relief afterwards.
So the notion of having “a good cry” is not without merit, but it seems to necessitate the right kind of social support to be effective, which means, in the end, that adults might just cry for much the same reason as human infants: to seek help from their friends and family.
65. According to Darwin, the production of tears ______.
A. was a way to get rid of bad emotions
B. was regarded as the same with crying

D. was intended to attract others’ attention

Parenting is not an easy job. How a child is raised shape the kind of person they become in future.
Even the basic needs for a child can be a great challenge for parents.
You must have heard about the many sleepless nights a parent has to get over when their baby wakes up in the middle of the night crying for food; or the many times a toddler just want to be held in the arms instead of walking in the street even though the parent is already exhausted (筋疲力尽) after a whole day out playing with the child etc.
Children depend on their parents for pretty much everything from basic survival needs to care and guidance. They need attention and parents simply can’t ignore the attention their children need.
Aside from the basic survival needs such as feeding and accommodation; responsible parents should realize the children’s development.
To teach children the right attitudes and values, parents have to be good role models.
Children tend to learn about morality from their family, so parents are responsible for being a role model and demonstrate the appropriate values to children. If a parent wants to teach their child about the importance of being honest, they should demonstrate honesty in front of them.
Parenting is always about striking a balance.
Children are not like machines; there isn’t a standard way to input data that automagically leads to desirable ‘outcomes’. Parents have to learn how to properly nurture (培养) their children by striking a balance about discipline and freedom; and very often, they have to learn on the go by observation and accumulating experiences.
A good parent is able to be strict about certain boundaries while at the same time allowing their child plenty of freedom to explore and learn on their own. Setting boundaries which the child must stay within teaches them to respect others and to control themselves; on the other hand, giving a child enough room to develop themselves shows that the parent respects and trusts them.
Parents have to make sacrifices in life, especially their pleasures.
This is particularly true for a new parent. Besides all the necessities, they have to change the way they live and make sacrifices to a certain extent. A good parent has to be willing to give up a lot of good nights’ sl eep, the times to hang out with friends and the quiet ‘me time’ to just rest and do nothing.
However, going through the hardship of raising a child can also be an invaluable opportunity for the couple to understand themselves and each other better.

请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Scientists in the Philippines(菲律宾) are working to make changes to rice, hoping these changes will help solve one of the world’s biggest health issues: the lack of Vitamin A. The rice is called “golden rice” because it is yellow. It has been genetically changed, or modified, to produce beta carotene (胡萝卜素), a form of Vitamin A.
Vitamin A is missing from the food of millions of people in the developing world. The deficiency (缺乏) is the leading cause of childhood blindness. Young children and pregnant women can, and do, die from Vitamin A deficiency. It is a public health problem in half of all countries, especially developing ones.
Patrick Moore, an ecologist and former Greenpeace president, supports production
of golden rice. He says there should not even be debate about the issue while children starve.
Daniel Ocampo, an agriculture expert for Greenpeace, argues that golden rice is still not ready as a food for humans after 20 years of research. He says it could be more dangerous than its supporters will admit.

Scientists in the Philippines are working hard to genetically modify rice to fight Vitamin A deficiency. It has generated a heated debate among the public. People’s opinions over it vary.
In my opinion, “golden rice” reflects the current trend s in modern technology and should be welcomed, since it is no more than a way to relieve famine and cure certain diseases. It makes no sense to dismiss the idea of growing genetically modified crops when a vast majority of people worldwide are still suffering from hunger and certain diseases. In addition, just because the genetic engineering is a relatively new research area, it doesn’t necessarily mean the technology will spell disaster. Furthermore, there has been no solid evidence of the negative side effects of GM food on human beings so far.
In short, with new technologies developing at an ever-increasing speed daily, it could be safe to introduce “golden rice”.
反对
Scientists in the Philippines are working on modifying rice genetically, hoping to offer cures for Vitamin A deficiency, which has aroused public concern. Different people have different opinions on it.
In my opinion, “golden rice” hasn’t undergone enough test yet and shouldn’t
be introduced in the first place. To begin with, no one can say for sure what effects it might have on us and our generations to come, for there has been much debate about it. To follow up, since GM crops are planted outside, they might also pose considerable threat to the food chain, which in turn, might influence the ecosystem. What’s more, because of the uncertainties of GM food, many countries have hesitated to give permission for the production of GM foods.
In conclusion, more work has to be done before the rice can be eaten by humans. Therefore, I would rather be cautious with “golden rice”.
