Beryl Cook taught herself to paint in her forties and became one of Britain’s best-known painters. She died peacefully earlier today at the age of 81.
She is best-known for creating a colorful and funny world of fat women. The comedian(喜剧演员)Victoria Wood once described her as “Rubens with jokes”. Describing her own work, she once said, “I don’t know how my pictures happen; they just do.”
Her pictures gained a lot of fans for her. Her fans had long been angry with the major art galleries for failing to notice her works, which sell for only £40,000. In 2008 they started a fight against Tate Modern for not buying Cook’s paintings. But towards the end of her life she enjoyed wider praise, with a major exhibition last year at the Baltic gallery in Gateshead. Jess Wilder, co-owner of London’s Portal Gallery, had shown her paintings for more than 30 years.
One of four sisters, Cook left school at 14 and in 1943 moved to London and became a showgirl (歌舞女演员) in a singing hall. In 1946 she married her childhood friend John, with whom she ran a bar for a short time. Their son, also named John, was born in 1950, and they moved to Southern Rhodesia in 1951 — a move said to be a turning point for Cook. After picking up some paints belonging to her son, she began creating pictures on wood. The family later moved to Plymouth, where in the summer months they ran a hotel.
A local exhibition in the mid-1970s attracted many people, followed by a cover in the Sunday Times magazine and Cook’s first London exhibition. In 1979 Melvyn Bragg made a film about Cook.

One day, when 12-year-old Sean Redden went to a popular chat room on the Internet, he saw the name of someone he’d never seen there before, Susan Hicks. Her message was “ Would someone help me? I can’t breathe. Help me! I can’t feel my left side.”
At first, Sean thought it was a bad joke and he told his mother Sharon Redden. But she asked, “ It’s not just some game, is it?

While searching the Internet, she began to feel terrible pain all through her body. The library was empty and the nearest phone was outside in the hallway. Not knowing what else to do, Sharon called the local police and explained the situation to officer Amy Schmidt. Schmidt told Sharon to try to get the sick girl’s phone number and address.
Meanwhile, the Texas police called the international telephone operator and asked to be connected to the proper agency(机构) in Finland. The Texas police explained the situation and gave Susan’s address to the Finnish operator. When Sean heard that, he typed, “Help is on the way.”

What's the best thing to eat on a hot summer day? Many people would say ice cream. Yes, eating icecream with some fruit on top is a great way to cool down. But think before you eat. If your body is hot from playing sports, it's not the best time to eat ice cream.
When your body is hot, a lot of ice cream may give your stomach some problems, and you could get diarrhoea (腹泻). You can eat some ice cream after you've cooled down a bit and had some tea. Just try not to eat too much all at once!
After dinner is another time people shouldn't eat or drink anything cold. Drink something hot after you eat, and your stomach will digest (消化) your food better. If you love fruit, summer is a great time for you. Go to the market and pick out the best fruit of the season. If you want to stay cool, oranges, bananas, pears and watermelons can help. Also, try to eat more ginger and gram. They will help you stay cool and healthy.
In summer, bacteria (细菌) grow very fast and make your food go bad quickly. Try hard to keep yourself and your home clean in summer. Always eat clean, fresh food. When you feel like eating a cold dish, put vinegar in it to disinfect it. If you can't finish your food and want to eat it again next day, make sure you heat it enough to kill the bacteria in it. And when you put food in the fridge, make sure to keep the cooked food away from the uncooked food.
Stay healthy this summer, and enjoy a nice treat now and then. What's inside your favourite snacks?

Roses are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died. When children can’t visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card.Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental(伤感的).Most
