三、阅读理解(30分,每小题2分)A
My most memorable and best experiences will stay in my mind for many years to come. For most people, horses are just animals, smelly beasts that should only be used for racing, for money. Ever since I was only a few years old, horses have been my passion. My dream was to ride a horse. When that time finally approached my anxious little life, my heart beat a thousand times a minute.
It was a warm summer day in Odessa, Ukraine, and we were at a park. My mom was buying several things for home while I wandered around to find something that made my eyes twinkle. I spotted a figure from heaven, a four-legged beautiful animal was standing down the block, breathing heavily. I ran up to the horse, not even knowing how to pet it, just excited to see the most beautiful creature. He was shining white, with a well-brushed tail. He was playing with his bit (马嚼子) and chewed on the reins (缰绳). I could tell this horse was bored.Where was the owner?
Right away I assumed that I could ride this horse. I turned the other way and went to search for my mom to get some money.
I spotted her buying groceries and dragged her to where the horse was. The owner was back and stated that it was his horse and I couldn't ride it. A warm stream of tears flooded down my cheeks as my mom tried to convince the man to let me ride the horse. He finally agreed for a costly price. He taught me how to get on the horse and explained to me that it
was important to keep heels down and arms steady. The gentle beat of the horse’s trot (小跑) awakened all the senses in me as I bounced up and down on the saddle (鞍). I was the happiest little girl in Ukraine, having the time of my life. I began planning how I was going to buy a horse after I became a millionaire. Before I knew it, the ride was over. Surprisingly, I actually learned to control the horse and change the pace.
That day was probably the happiest time of my life. Most children wouldn’t have as much as fun as I di d.Several years later, after coming to America, I began to get involved in show jumping. Women work harder than men at university and get better degrees as a result, according to a study at Brunel University.
The research, which followed 200 students for four years, found that women consistently outperformed men in their studies even though they had started their courses with almost identical A-level grades.
An analysis of the results showed that while 65 percent of female graduates were awarded, only 35 percent of male graduates did as well. Girls are known to outperform boys at school, but this research showed that trend continued at university.
F iona Smith, who led the research, said, “The research shows that the difference has something to do with schools in general.”
“It also shows something about the inequality for working women in terms of pay and promotion. Women work harder at school, harder at university, and do better at both, but they still receive less pay.” The research found that female students were more faithful, less likely to miss lectures, and more likely to believe that their marks reflected their abilities than male students. Female students were also more likely to ask for and receive support from their professors.
Women were also more likely to choose their universities because they liked the courses offered.
In contrast, men were more likely than women to miss lectures due to “other affairs” and “laziness”, and to believe that playing sports was an important part of university life.
Generally, people think that women’s success comes from more emphasis on coursework, but the research showed that female geographers at Brunel did better in their exams than in their coursework.
Dr Smith said, “Most women feel that getting good grades is the most important part of university life. They believe that they need to work harder in order to compete in the male-dominated (男性主导的) environment they will encounter at work. Good grades are viewed as an ‘insurance policy’ for success. Men, on the other hand, prefer going out and playing sports to academic work.”
“This research shows how important it is to get all young people working hard and teach them the value of higher education,” he said. 40.The research at Brunel University showed that women ________.
A.did worse than men both at school and at university B.got better grades than men
C.paid little attention to their courses D.often missed classes
41.Which of the following about men is true according to the passage?
A.They work as hard as women.
B.They spend as much time on courses as women.
C.They play a lot more than women.
D.They consider good grades to be an “insurance policy” for success.
42.We can infer from the results of the research that ________.
A.women do better both at school and at university
B.female students are more likely to ask for and receive support from their professors
C.compared with men, women are in an unfavorable condition in the male-dominated world
D.it’s easier for women to get rises in pay and promotion

A.give the government some advice on higher education
B.show us some information about higher education

Making lists is relaxing. It dictates the shape of the immediate
future; it calms you down (it’s OK, it’s on a list somewhere) and it
makes you feel good when you cross something off list-making is standard
practice in therapy for depression). It might even help you to get things
done too. The more you have to do, the more you need a list and few people
with high-powered jobs get by without them. Women always think they’re
better at lists than men. Men tend to have Tasks which they
assemble ’into Action Plans whereas women just have lists of Things To
Do.
James Oliver, psychologist, has created his own “time management
matrix ()”. He writes a list of things to do and then organizes them
into categories: things that have to be done straight away, other things that it would be good to do today, things that are important but haven’t got to be done immediately and things that are less urgent but that he doesn’t want to forget. “Using categories to order the world is the way the h uman mind works,” he says. “After that, you should divide things into levels of importance.” But he also warns, “If people get too absorbed in making l ists, it doesn’t work. They have too many categories and lose their ability to decide which is the most
i mportant.”
It’s all a question of what works best for you, whether it’s a tidy notebook, a packet of Post-it notes or the back of your hand. Having tried all these, student Kate Rollins relies on a computerized list, which is printed out each morning. “My electronic organizer has changed my life,” she says. “Up to now, I’ve always relied on my good memory, but now that I’m working and studying, I find I’ve got too much to keep in my head.”
So what are you waiting for? No, you’re not too busy to make today the first day of your upgraded time-managed life. In fact, there’s no better time than the present to begin to take increased control of your work and life. So, get out your pencil and pen and make a list.
48. The main purpose of making lists is to .
A. help map out one’s future
B. divide things into levels of importance
C. treat certain diseases such as depression
D. organize one’s work and life reasonably
49. We can learn from the passage that .
A. good memory helps in list making
B. too much’ listing might be misleading
C. women usually make a lot more lists than men
D. people with
high-powered jobs make lists most
50. In this passage the author intends to .
A. suggest a way of raising one’s living standard
B. introduce some ways of business management
C. urge people to develop the habit of listing
D. warn people not to rely on their memory

五、书面表达
Recently , I have made a survey in my class on how they study . They have different learning methods.
Some students listen to teachers attentively, trying to catch everything that the teachers say in class. Besides, they often consult teachers as often as possible if they have some problems. Because of this, they spend less time doing their homework, so it is certain that they can go to bed earlier and they always keep energetic in the day.
However, others have quite a different way of learning. They have to sit up late at night doing their homework, so they often feel sleepy in class. As a result, they miss lots of key points and it is usually takes them more time to finish their homework, which makes it difficult for them to concentrate on what they are doing.
According to me , the former learning method is more effective. Only in an efficient method can we improve our study . Meanwhile , we will have more free time to enjoy ourselves.。
