Do you have bright ideas? Ideas or inventions that change society or, at least,
make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make
the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their
bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren
under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman”. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately.
We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power.
You can do so mu ch with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated
road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from
them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We
found that people wer e more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you
can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over
the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!
The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British
industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the
start of “pupil power!”
56. The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to ______.
A. help schoolchildren in their studies
B. take better care of schoolchildren
C. stop asking schoolchildren for suggestions
D. pay more attention to schoolchildren’s inventive power
57. Neil Hunt’s design would finally lead to the improvement of the way of ________.
A. recording direct sunshine
B. knowing how strong sunlight is
C. using the energy of the sun
D. recording the hours of sunshine
58. The organizers of the competition hoped the schoolchildren would ________.
A. become good designers for future Britain
B. win as many prizes as they could
C. design something useful for the next day
D. invent something for immediate use
59. What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs?
A. To add to the beauty of a city.
B. To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C. To help make a car trip more exciting.
D. To warn people to be careful while working.
60. The writer holds that people seldom ________.
A. make their life easier
B. turn their bright ideas into reality
C. have bright ideas
D. think of inventing something
B
I always avoid going on field investigations with the toxics (毒物)team, unless
it’s absolutely necessary. It’s not that I mind the hard work, or am afraid of coming
into contact with toxic substances. What I fear is quickly losing hope about the work I do.
However, doing field research with the toxics team, all I see and feel is filth —nothing else. Even if I close my eyes, I can smell the smell of food processing, rotting organic waste from paper mills and chemicals from clothing manufacturers. One morning, I went to investigate a discharged pipe to document and collect samples of pollutants secretly being emitted by a textile mill. I had to work with the utmost secrecy in order to avoid being discovered by the textile mill.
I dipped a long measuring pole into the large polluting pipe to measure the volume of polluted water being emitted. But the surface of the water, covered in oil and filth, made me feel as if to vomit.
All of a sudden, I felt someone hit me on my back. It frightened me so much that I almost fell into the water. I grasped the pole and looked behind me to see an old man standing there. He asked,“Can you catch fish here?”I realized that he thought
I was holding a fishing pole, so I kept calm and said,“Yes, I heard that there’s
a kind of small fish living in this water, and it has medicinal benefits.”
The old man grew quite curious and replied,“That may be. If a fish can survive in water as dirty as this , it must have a lot of resistance. So it wouldn’t be too strange if such fish had medicinal benefits.”
It was clear he was just passing by, so I answered,“Yeah, survival of the fittest. Fish that adapt can survive, just like us humans.”
He kept talking to me and didn’t want to leave. He wanted to see whether or not
I would catch the small fish with medicinal benefits.
61. The text is mainly about___________.
A. a research report about pollution
B. an exciting experience of fishing
C. an experience of doing research on pollution
D. an unforgettable talk with an old man
62. Which word can take the place of the underlined word in the 2nd paragraph?
A. fish
B. textile
C. water
D. pollutants
63. What is the writer of the text most probably?
A. A newspaper reporter.
B. A researcher about pollution.
C. A fisherman.
D. A worker of the textile mill.
64. Why did the writer tell the old man he was fishing?
A. Because he wanted to satisfy the old man’s curiosity
B. Because the old man was interested in fishing too
C. Because he did the research secretly
D. Because the old man wanted to buy the fish
65. We can infer from the last paragraph that ___________.
A. the old man had found out the secret.
B. the old man wanted to catch the fish by himself.
C. the writer would have to tell the old man the fact.
D. the old man was sent to watch over the writer.
C
In our home it was natural to fear our father. Even our mother was afraid of him. As children, my sister and I thought every family was like that. Every family had an unpredictable dad who was impossible to please and a praying mom who was there to protect the children.
We were good children. Mom was always telling us we were, even if Daddy couldn’t see it, part of this was beca use we didn’t dare to do anything.
Then came the day we found something new and fun to do. We worked at drawing with chalk on our wooden front door and making lots of pretty pictures all over it. We had a great time. We thought Mom would love it and praise us.
The praise we expected did not come. Instead, Mom was mad. We did not understand why, but we knew we were in big trouble!
Off we ran to find a place to hid. In our wooded yard it was not hard for two small children to find safety. Together, we hid behind a tree and did not move. Soon we heard the frightened voices of Mom and our neighbors calling out to us.
The sun set and it began to get dark. Those around us became more anxious, and we became more frightened. However, we still didn’t move.
As we clung (紧紧拥抱) together in the dark, we became aware of yet another voice, one we recognized with great fear: our daddy. But there was something strangely different about it. In it we heard something we had never heard before: fear, agony (痛苦) and despair. Then came his prayers in tearful voice. Our daddy was promising God that he would give his life to him if he would safely return his girls.
Nothing in our lives had prepared us for this kind of shock. Neither of us remembers making a decision to come out. We were drawn to him like a magnet (磁铁), our fears disappearing into the forest. We didn’t know yet if we actually took steps or if God somehow moved us out and into Daddy’s arms. What we do remember were those strong, loving arms holding us and crying, hugging us like we were precious.
Things were different after that. We had a new daddy. Our whole family was changed by a piece of chalk.

A. brought them great trouble
B. gained their mother’s praise
C. made their father very angry
D. failed to meet their mother’s demands 68.Which shows the children’s emotional change when they heard their father’s voice?
A. Anxious→content →miserable
B. Frightened→happy→depressed
C. Excited→fearful→desperate
D. Scared→shocked→moved
69.In the last paragraph, The underlined sentence “We had a new daddy” implies that________.
A. the relationship between the family members changed
B. the author’s father developed an interest in drawing
C. the author’s mother found a new husband
D. the children were afraid of their new father
70.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The belief in God
B. A piece of chalk
C. The big trouble of my mother
D. A painful memory of my childhood.
D
Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about s cience as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we're finished with your lists, do you have questions
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don't jump in with “That's right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That's interesting” or “I'd never thought of it that way before”, or coming up
Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn't mak e sense, children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What's more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your dis
Lastly, show; don't tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜), and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
71. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is ___________.
A. to let them see the world around
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
72. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced by_________.
A. any questions
C. questions from textbooks
73. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way if adults _________.
A. ask them to answer quickly.
C. tell them to answer the next day.
74. In which of the following paragraph(s) does the author tell us what to say to
A. The second and third.
C. The fifth and sixth.
D. The seventh.
75. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children's curiosity except that adults should________.

参考范文
Recently we have had a class meeting whose topic is “success”. Views vary from person to person.
Some of the students think that making a lot of money means success, because with money you can do a lot of things and also money earns you a high position in society. Some of the students hold the view that success means becoming a famous person like a super star or a sports star because they are well known and their parents are proud of them. However, the other students think that making a contribution to society means success. The reason is that only a few people can be millionaires or become famous. As ordinary people, they should do what they can to serve the people.
In my opinion, there is no standard for success. So long as we do our best and achieve our goals, then that is success.。
