舒中高一期中英语第2页 (共10页)
“Hi! John.” Mary ran towards me with a rare bright smile on her face, saying, “I'm go ing to have a dance performance tonight. I hope you'll come. Here is the ticket. Don't forget!” She left in a hurry, disappearing in a crowd quickly.
“What?” I just came to my mind, “What performance? Dance?” I asked myself. Mary was not such kind of girl. I had never seen her making up or wearing attractive clothes. Besides, she always wore her big black-frame glasses, for she did not know how to dress up indeed.
I arrived at the hall with the ticket. Her performance was the seventh one. I knew I would suffer from a hard time before her turn, but her performance was worth of watching, no matter how long I would wait for. Time went slowly, I struggled with myself not to fall asleep.
“Let's welcome the next exciting dance—Latin!” Applause filled the hall at once.
I opened my eyes as large as possible, fearing to lose anything. Wearing a golden and shinning skirt, Mary appeared on the glorious(辉煌的)stage. Her dress went well with the brilliant lights. I could feel all the audience in the hall focused their eyes on her and it was also hard for me to remove my sights from her. She was so beautiful. Dancing with a charming smile, she was fully absorbed in the Latin music. After all the performance ended, I waited for her at the gate.
“Hi!” She stood in front of me with a bag and her crystal high-heeled shoes(水晶高跟鞋) in her hands, and dressed as she used to be. “How do you feel?”
“Fantastic!” I answered.
“Ha, ha. I knew it would be.” She could not conceal her excitement, laughing like a child.
“May I lend a hand?”
“Thank you!” She handed her crystal shoes to me which were shinning in the wonderful starry night. I realized that every girl has a pair of special shoes which are like the crystal shoes of Cinderella.

B. Dance is really a kind of art.
C. Every girl has something special.
D. Every girl should be liked by others.

The majority of astronauts(宇航员)from America have been men. At the start of the space programme there was strong resistance(抵制) from some people against having women in space. However, some women were very keen to become astronauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training programme for women astronauts.
Judy Resnick and Christa McAuliffe were both astronauts and they were both women, but in many other ways they were very different. Both of them were on Flight STS-51-L. Judy Resnick was born in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went on to obtain a PhD in 1977. She was a member of the first group of women selected for astronaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the second woman in space. During that flight, she helped to launch three new satellites and she carried out a programme of research. She was, in many ways, a professional astronaut whose whole life was devoted to space travel.
Christa McAuliffe was born in 1948 and she was an astronaut almost by accident. In 1984, NASA decided to find a teacher who could accompany astronauts into space. They hoped that she would be able to communicate with students from space and encourage every one of them to be interested in space travel. Christa was a secondary teacher in history and social studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected from over 11,000 applicants to go on flight STS-51-L. She was also a very good communicator and she immediately established a very good relationship with the news media(传媒). It was partly because of this that there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the flight. Thousands of students in schools and universities all around the country were looking forward to communicating with Christa in space. Millions of people were watching her flight with great interest. It is partly because of the excitement over McAuliffe's place in the flight that the disaster in 1986 had such an effect on people.
25. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that ___________.
A. Judy was against the idea of having women in space at first
B. Judy was the first woman selected for astronaut training

26. Christa McAuliffe was chosen for training because _______.
A. she was popular with the news media
B. she expected to give history lessons in space
C. she was an excellent teacher and communicator
D. she made the students in space very excited
27. The reason why there was great interest in Flight STS-51-L is that ________.
A. both Christa and Judy got PhD degrees in the same year
舒中高一期中英语第4页(共10页)
B. a young secondary school teacher was on the flight
C. students were going to learn more about space travel
D. it was the first time for women to travel in space in the world

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don't do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.
So, you have to give a speech and you're terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it's over. I'm just no good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
Cheer up! It doesn't have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible and use pictures, charts and graphs if they will help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don't talk over their heads and don't talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you'll see that you don't have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You're not convinced yet. Give it a try and see what
happens.

Be on time
Someone you are meeting for the first time is not interested in your “good excuse” for running late. Plan to arrive a few minutes ea rly. 37 Arriving early is much better than arriving late, and is the first step in creating a great first impression.
