Koala bears, a symbol of Australia, may become extinct. Rapid urbanization(城市化) in eastern Australia destroys their natural homes, say environmental activists.
The Australian Koala Foundation has written to the government. It wants to declare that the koala is a vulnerable(脆弱的)species. This request was made after a study of 1,000 koala natural homes. This study found that 30 percent no longer had koalas in them and that 60 percent had become much smaller.
Koalas are protected by law but the eucalyptus(桉树) trees, which they call home and get their only source of food from, are not.
There are about 100,000 koalas in Australia, down from an estimated seven to ten million at the time of European settlement in 1788. In the 1920s up to three million koalas were shot for their fur.
The head of the foundation,Deborah Tabart, said that the major problem for koalas is that the majority of Australia’s 20 million people and the majority of the koalas population both call Australia’s eastern states home. She said that 80 percent of Australia’s east coast temperate(温带的) forests were destroyed. The destruction together with the rapid urbanization along the eastern seaboard could make koalas extinct within 15 years.
Wild koalas only exist in four of Australia’s six state s: Queensland, New South Wales. Victoria and South Australia.
The marsupial(有袋动物) has no natural enemy, but its number has been falling for many years because of urbanization, car accidents and dog attacks, “more than 4,000 koalas are killed each year by dogs and cars,” said the foundation.
The spread of human growth can greatly affect the environment. It is very difficult to stop these phenomena. But in order to save Australian beloved koalas, efforts must begin now.
1. According to the passage, what is known about koalas?
A.They have many natural enemies.
B. They exist only in Australia.
C. No law has been passed to protect them.
D. They live all over Australia.
2. The major problem koalas face is that ________.
A.they have the most rapid population growth
B. many are killed in car accidents
C. they can be hurt by dogs
D. they are endangered because their natural homes have been destroyed
3. What does the Australian Koalas Foundation do? A.It declares that the koalas is a vulnerable species.
B. It is an organization to help save koalas from extinction.
C. It stops the spread of human growth.
D. It believes that koalas will die out in 15 years
4. From the passage, we can conclude that ________.
A.Australia is made up of more than six states
B. rapid urbanization is the direct cause of destruction to koalas’ natural homes
C. eucalyptus trees are the home but not the food of koalas
D. no effort has been made to save koalas.

A Hollywood-like proposal to explore the center of the Earth calls for exploding a crack in the planet's surface and dropping a probe(探测器) behind tons of molten iron, which would sink to the core.
“The plan is not ready, ”its creat or said, “but it is more than just a dream.” Exploring the earth's center is ambitious in a scientific sense and it could yield valuable data. The solid inner core rotates (turns) faster and is fluid and responsible for Earth's magnetic field. But scientists do not know exactly why all this is so, nor do they know the exact composition or temperature of the core.
If further research were to show that the core mission could work, it would be comparable in dollar terms with many space projects, says David Stevenson, a scientist who has worked on several US National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions. Stevenson explained his idea in the journal "Nature," recently.
Stevenson figures that nuclear equipment would likely be the best way to explode the necessary gap, as long and deep as several football fields and about 30 centimetres wide. The event would equal a magnitude-seven earthquake.
At least 100,000 tons of hot iron .would be poured into the crack, along with a well-protected probe, the size of a grapefruit(葡萄柚).
"Once you set that condition up, the crack is self-repairing," Stevenson explains. The weight of the iron, which is much thicker than Earth's outer regions, would open a gap all the way to the outer portion of the planet's core, about 3,000 kilometres down. The mission would seek to measure the temperature, electrical conductivity(传导率)and chemical composition of the core. And the Earth probe would relay data to the surface by changing itself to create low-strength waves similar to sending sound from a loudspeaker.
"We've spent more than US $10 billion in unmanned missions to the planets," Stevenson said. "But we've only been down about 10 kilometres into our own planet. "
Other Earth scientists say the plan is impractical, but attracting.
University of Connecticut geophysicist Vernon Cormier said intense heat and pressure make it impossible to drill down to the core. And, international treaties would put special limits on underground nuclear explosions.
9. According to Vernon Cormier, the biggest problem to explore the center of the Earth is _____ .
A. some scientists are against the practice
B. they haven't so much money to carry on the research
C. they can't get over the intense heat and pressure
D. how to know the exact composition or temperature of the core
10. The possible value of the scientific research is _____.
A. to get valuable data
B. to learn about the rotation of the earth core
C. to seek materials for a new movie
D. to know how Earth's magnetic field comes about
11. Which of the following statements is right?
A. The inner core of Earth is a kind of liquid.
B.The project would cost as much as space projects.
C. Following the probe is tons of hot iron to be poured into the crack.
D. All the scientists said the plan was practical.
12. The article is written _____.
A. to introduce a new Hollywood movie subject matter
B. to introduce a new scientific imagination
C. to cause people to argue about the topic
D. to introduce to readers a new science research

When most people think of tropical islands, lined with white sandy beaches and bright blue seas, it is often the Caribbean or South Pacific that comes to mind. But for Chinese tourists who want a taste of paradise on Earth there is new place to consider.
Mauritius, an island lying off the southeast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, has just been added to China’s list of tourist destinations. Rich in history, natural beauty and culture, the island has been a popular destination for the world’s tourists
for many years.
On December 15, 2004, a total of eight African countries were added to the list. The others are Tunisia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Seychelles.
The island has passed through the controlling hands of a number of European powers, including Dutch, French and British. In 1968, Mauritius won its independence.
At present, over half the population of Mauritius in Hindu and another fifth is Muslim (穆斯林). Both groups are descendants (后裔) from workers brought to the island from India by the British. Some Chinese were also brought over to work. There are also descendants of African slaves and Franco Mauritians, the original settlers of
the island.
One of the best things about the island is the food. There is a mouth watering
mix of European, Chinese and Indian flavours and seafood is very popular. A typical Mauritian dinner might have Indian chicken curry, Chinese pork, British roast beef
and French style vegetables. Boiled rice is served with just about everything. All
that is washed down with a plentiful supply of local beer and rum (朗姆酒).
The pleasant tropical climate and scenery provide the perfect setting to enjoy everything. The sea is full of colorful life that lives around the coral reef (珊
瑚礁). This makes Mauritius a wonderful place for swimming and diving. The large number
of interesting fish means it is also an exciting place for those who like to go fishing. 13.Which group of the following topics is NOT discussed in the text?
A.Food and history. B.Scenery and population.
C.Location and sports. D.Natural resources and agriculture.
14. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Mauritius has something similar to the Caribbean or South Pacific.
B.Mauritius has a history of less than 40 years.
C.Mauritius has been a popular destination for Chinese tourists for many years.
D.The main food in Mauritius is local beer and rum.
15.The underlined word “This” in the last paragraph refers to “”.
A.pleasant tropical climate B.beautiful scenery
C.the sea with colorful life D.the coral reef

The legal age for drinking alcohol in the United States is twenty-one. 16 This week in our Foreign Student Series, we look at alcohol policies at American colleges and universities.
17 But many schools have been moving to strengthen their rules.
The United States has more than seventeen million students in higher education. Each year, 1,700 of them aged 18 to 24 die from alcohol-related road crashes and other injuries.
600,000 more are injured while under the influence of alcohol. And almost 700,000 are attacked by another student who have been drinking.
One behavior that college officials are trying to prevent is binge(狂欢) drinking, having four or five drinks or more in a short period of time. Some researchers have found that students who think binge drinking is normal often overestimate how much other students really drink. 18
At the University of Oklahoma, new policies went into effect after a 19-year-old student died in 2004. He had been drinking heavily at a party.
Now alcohol is banned from all fraternity(兄弟会) and sorority(女生联谊会) houses and university housing. Student organizations can serve alcohol at events but only on Friday and Saturday nights. And they must provide for transportation to and from off-campus parties. 19
The policies govern behavior on campus and off. With a first violation, students pay seventy-five dollars and their parents are told. 20 For a second "strike," they have to pay one hundred fifty dollars. A third strike means a suspension for at least one semester.
A. They must also take an alcohol education class.
B. People under 21 will not be allowed to drink.
C. These policies differ from school to school.
D. A person can die of alcohol poisoning.
E. When they are drinking, they always forget it.
F. Other new requirements include an alcohol education program that first-year students take online.
G. Underage drinking is not only a crime but also a common part of college social life.

Dear Paul,
I quite sympathize with you and understand the great trouble you are suffering from. I suggest you communicate your trouble to your teachers and classmates so as to get help from them. You are not supposed to think about your exams all the time, which only makes you more stressed out. Instead, you should think about the progress you have made in your study, which will surely increase your own confidence. In addition, I advise you to do more exercise in your spare time to relieve your stress, because sports will also help you sleep better at night.
I hope you will get out of your trouble sooner and live happily.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming。
