Help is out there
Mental illness is rising among children and teenagers in China. Around 30 million Chinese under 17 have experienced symptoms (症状) of mental illness. These include attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, 多动症), depression (抑郁症) and self-harm, People’s Daily reported.
The global picture isn’t bright, either. According to the World Health Organization, the number of children with mental illnesses will climb by 50 percent by 2020. It will be one of the five leading causes of disability (残疾) and death in children.
However, only about 20 percent of young people with mental illnesses end up getting proper treatment (治疗). This is mainly because people regard mental illness as something to be ashamed of and don’t pay enough attention to the issue, CCTV News noted.
But without timely treatment, children and teenagers may continue to struggle with mental illness when they become adults, according to Liu Huaqing, head of the clinical psychology department (临床心理科) at Beijing Huilongguan Hospital. To solve the issue, enhanced (提高的) social awareness and professional treatment are both necessary.
Some schools in China are taking action on this issue. In Changsha, several middle schools recently held outdoor activities to improve their students’ mental health. Activities such as “Super Model” and “Amazing
Rhythm” helped the students discover their own strengths and boost (增强) their self-confidence, Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reported.
If you find that you or your friends are struggling with mental illness, such as anxiety (焦虑症) or depression, don’t be afraid to tell your parents or teachers about it. They can help you get the professional treatment you need. There is no reason to ever feel ashamed about your mental health. Help is out there.
