An increasing number of Chinese are jogging to get and stay fit. Most joggers will run alone, but some will jog with friends or even coaches.
The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is one of the most popular spots. It is packed with runners in the afternoon, usually after work, and at weekends.
Jogging after a whole day’s work can be a way to unwind. It is true for He Wenjun, whose workplace is right near the forest park. She discovered her athletic gift at the age of seven, when she began playing tennis. Then she turned to jogging, and she has persevered with it for 10 years. “I come to jog almost every day after work, whenever I have time. I think jogging is good for my health. And for me, a girl, it helps me to achieve to keep slim,” she said.
She says she prefers jogging alone, so she can focus better. She loves jogging, even during Beijing’s smoggy days. “If the smog is severe, I’ll hold off jogging for a while. But if I really want to get away from work, I’ll wear a mask, or just ignore the smog and go on jogging,” she said.
For those who are not so athletic, jogging also has its attractions.
Wu Houbin started roughly two years ago, when he was severely obese(病态肥胖的). Within two months, his weight dropped from 82 kilograms to 64 kilograms. The success helped him recover health, and he has made friends. “Jogging does not require speed, but perseverance. If you want to stick to the game, you need to take it as a task, a habit, and then eventually a hobby,” Wu said.
Jogging is beneficial to heart-lung function, and the skeletal system, but doctors say improper technique damages the joints, especially the knees and ankles. “Excessive jogging wears down the body, and harms one’s health. Poor technique harms the muscles and skeletons, and can cause secondary injuries. And, jogging in a bad environment can cause circulation problems,” said Lu Zhiyong, attending doctor, Sports Hospital, General Administration of Sports.
Dr. Lu has some tips for joggers, and those who are thinking of taking it up.
He says people should first evaluate(评估)their physical condition, to decide the amount and type of exercise, and jogging in the open air is better than running on a running machine. In the US, tornadoes(龙卷风)are responsible for 80 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries each year. Although they happen quite frequently, tornadoes are difficult to predict. Why? Tornadoes develop from storms, but only some storms are likely to become tornadoes. Scientists don’t know where and when a storm will touch the ground and turn into a tornado. Today, the warning time for a tornado is usually just 13 minutes.
Time Samaras is a storm chaser. His job is to find tornados and follow them. When he gets close to a tornado, he puts a special tool called a turtle probe on the ground. This tool measures things like a tornado’s temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind speed. With this information, Samaras can learn what causes tornadoes to develop. If meteorologists(气象学家) understand this, they can warn people about tornadoes sooner and save lives.
How does Samaras hunt tornadoes? It’s not easy. First, he has to find one Tornadoes are too small to see using weather satellites. So Samaras can’t rely on these tools to find a tornado. Instead, he waits for tornadoes to develop. Every May and June, Samaras drivers about 40,000 kilometers across an area known as ToknownTornado Alley, looking and hoping to spot a tornado.
Once Samaras sees a tornado, the chase begins. But a tornado is hard to follow. Some tornadoes change direction several times—for example, moving east and then west and then east again. When Sanaras finally gets near a tonrnado, he puts the turtle probe on the ground. Being this close to a tornado is terrifying. Debris (碎片) is flying in the air . Then wind is blowing at high speed. He must get away quickly.
The work is risky, even for a skilled chaser like Samaras. But danger won’t stop his hunt for the perfect storm.

D
I’m sitting in my kitchen in London, trying to figure out a text message from my brother. He lives in our home country of Germany. We speak German to each other, a language that's rich in strange words, but I've never heard this one before: fremdschämen.
The experience gets me to consider: can we lose our mother language? Most immigrants (移民)know what it’s like to be not as good at their mother language as before. The process seems obvious: the longer you are away, the more your language suffers. But it’s not quite so straightforward. It turns out that how long you've been away doesn't always matter. Socializing with other native speakers abroad can worsen your own native skills. And emotional factors like trauma(精神创伤) can be the biggest factor of all.
In children, the phenomenon of language attrition (语言磨蚀)is somewhat easier to explain since their brains are generally more flexible and adaptable. Until the age of about 12, a person’s language skills are relatively easy to change. Studies on international adopters have found that even nine-year-olds can almost completely forget their first language when they are removed from their country of birth.
But in adults, the first language is unlikely to disappear entirely except in extreme circumstances. For example, Monika Schmid analyzed the German of elderly German-Jewish wartime refugees(难民) in the UK and the US. The main factor that influenced their language skills wasn't how long they had been abroad or how old they were when they left. It was how much trauma they had experienced as victims. Those who left Germany in the early days of Nazi occupation, before the worst violence, tended to speak better German – despite having been abroad the longest.
Those who left later, tended to speak German with difficulty or not at all.
“It seemed very clearly a result of this trauma”, says Schmid. “Even though German was the language of childhood, home and family, it was also the language of painful memories”. The most traumatized refugees had held them back. As one of them said: “I feel that Germany betrayed me. America is my country, and English is my language.”
32. What does the first paragraph serve as?
A.A comment.
B.A background.
C. An explanation.
D. An introduction.
33. What do paragraph 4 and 5 mainly talk about?
A. How two languages coexist.
B. The way to deal with adult’s trauma.
C. The reasons behind adult’s language attrition.
D. Whether trauma leads to adult’s language attrition.
34. Why does trauma cause a person's mother language to disappear?
A. Because he can’t remember his mother language.
B. Because his ability to communicate is affected.
C. Because his country is far from him.
D. Because he chooses to escape from bad experiences.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Where does your native language come from?
B. Will you lose your native language?
C. How does trauma affect your first language?
D. How far are you from your mother tongue
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

As Labor Day gets close, many Americans are trying to find some final vacation time before kids head back to school. 36 With people still looking for that escape, it’s important to know some tips to make your dollars go the extra mile when traveling. Choose places that are in their
off-season during kids’ school breaks. Over the Christmas/New Year’s break, for example, the prices for flights and hotels in the Caribbean and Hawaii are sky-high. 37 You can go to places that are in their low season but are warm and festive(欢乐的).
For US trips, think about extended-stay hotels(常住酒店). Extended-stay hotels give you affordable suites(套房) with a lot of free facilities for the money. You get a door to the kids’ room that you can close at bedtime. 38 A refrigerator, microwave and washing machines, as well as free breakfast, Wi-Fi and sometimes even dinner and snacks are available, too.
For European city trips, rent an apartment. Hotel rooms in European cities can be expensive and tiny. They have no refrigerator or microwave, and neighbors can hear every sound. 39 It also gives you more space and thicker(更厚的) walls. The kitchen can help you save some money in hotel breakfast charges, and the washing machine can help you save the time for washing.
40 Hunting for specific items — maybe they’re seashells from each beach you stop at, maps from tourist information offices or door handle do-not-disturb-signs from hotels — gives kids a task and keeps them busy in a trip. Collecting souvenirs on a certain theme is a lot cheaper than buying them.
A.Look for things with your kids.
B.An apartment usually costs less.
C.So you can consider other places.
D.Collect things instead of buying things.
E. You also have more space to move around.
F. You can also choose extended-stay hotels if you like.
G. However, a getaway any time of the year can be pricey.

由第二段“Jogging after a whole day’s work can be a way to unwind. I think jogging is good for my health. And for me, a girl, it helps me to achieve to keep slim”可知,工作一天以后慢跑是一种很好的放松方式。
