•The following sample essay include 478 words
Before industrialization, most people worked on farms. Large families provided the labor necessary to run a farm, and most people lived in extended families, which encompassed several generations of relatives. In extended families, healthy and strong members could support their young, elderly, and weak relatives. However, the nuclear family—two adults and their children—has become the main unit in modern societies, to provide affection and emotional support by and to all its members, particularly infants and young children. Therefore, I agree with the statement that the extended family has played a less important role in modern society.
First, the development of social assistance system loosened kin relationship. For example, American corporations began offering pension plans in the late 1800s. By the early 1900s, many state and local governments offered pensions to government employees such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Private insurance companies had also begun offering health and disability insurance policies by this time. These types of financial support covered a majority of U.S. citizens. Both government and private sponsored social programs offer basic living necessities, provide health care, and solve family problems. The sick, the old, and the handicapped can be very well taken care of by social assisting programs without the assistance of relatives.
second, it is institutes, colleges and universities, not relatives, that deliver knowledge, teach skills, and cultivate ability. In the past thousand years, people acquired their basic living skills, such as cooking food, cutting trees, hunting animals, cultivating plants from their old generation. Grandparents, uncles, and older cousins played an essential role in teaching, training, and coaching. However, the development of highly specialized tools, machinery, and equipments in recent years needs more complex working skills and elaborate operating ability, which can hardly be taught by grandparents, aunts, and cousins. People no longer needed to live in large families to make a living. The support from extended family can no longer be considered as important as it was in the past.
Finally, law reinforces the responsibility of nuclear family and loosens the relationship of extended families. Frequently, we believe that the nuclear family with two adults and their children is the main unit in the societies. We also believe that the responsibility of the parents in the nuclear family provides its members with protection, companionship, security, and socialization. However, with respect to the responsibility of the extended family, we take it for granted that the extended family which consists of grandparents and other relatives is a subordinate part of our life. As a result, extended family relationship is loosened. Therefore, I believe that extended families are becoming less important now days than they are in the past. The division of labor in modern society separate people who are living in a big family, social assistance system diminished the need of support from relatives, and law also reinforced the relationship from nuclear families.。
