It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after
the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea
touching the shore gently.
My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me
to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided
to go all the same. I’ m so glad I did.
On the road to the harbor we could see the terrible destruction on the coast,
but the harbor itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the
arms of a bay (海湾) that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on board,
we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance.
On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn’ t believe it — there aren ’ t any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean in the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could
The little baby whale—actually as big as our boat—was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big
whirlpools( 漩涡 ) and waves.“ She’ s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong
side, ” my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat in a semicircle to
the other side and, heading the boat toward the baby whale, pushed it gently. With
our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swamup right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to
the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe—and to give us
a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight form the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they
swam into the distance.
In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with
those wonder animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later,I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.

Adam Smith was the first person to see the importance of the division of the
labor(劳动分工) . He gave us an example of the process by which pins were made in
England.
One man draws out the wire, another strengthens it, a third cuts it, a fourth
points it, and a fifth gives it a head. Just to make the head requires two or three different operations. The work of making pins is divided into about eighteen different operations, which in some factories are all performed by different people, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them.
Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4,800 pins a worker. But if all of them had worked separately and independently
without division of labor, they certainly could not have made twenty pins in a day
and not even one.
There can be no doubt that division of labor is an efficient way of organizing
work. Fewer people can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this, but he also took it
for granted that the division of labor is itself responsible for economic growth
and development and it accounts for the difference between expanding economies and those that stand still. In fact, the division of labor adds nothing new, and it only enables people to produce more of what they already have.

A.show the advantages of the old labor system
B.stress how powerful the individual worker was
C.show the advantages of the division of labor
D.stress the importance of increasing production

division of labor ________.
A.was an efficient way of organizing work
B.was an important development in methods of production
C.finally led to economic development
D.increased the production of existing goods

Every hour spent in watching TV, DVDs and videos as an adult reduces life
expectancy by almost 22 minutes, a study suggests. And viewing TV for an average
of six hours a day can cut short your life by five years.
The research claims that a sedentary(久坐的 )lifestyle is as bad for health as smoking and obesity(extreme fatness), because of the dangers caused by inactivity
and the greater opportunities it offers for unhealthy eating.
The academics making the study set out to figure out the whole risk to life expectancy from watching television.Their research involved more than11,000people over the age of 25.
Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, they concluded:“TV viewing time may be associated with a loss of life, which is similar to other major long-lasting disease risk factors(因素 )such as physical inactivity and obesity.”
The researchers, from the University of Queensland, used information from the
Australian Diabetes,Obesity and Lifestyle Study, together with population and death rate data.
But they said,“Although we used Australian data, the effects in other industrialized and developing countries are likely to be similar, considering the
large amounts of time spent watching TV and similarities in disease patterns. ” In the United Kingdom, the average amount of time spent watching TV is four hours a
day, compared with five hours in the United States.
Earlier this year, a separate study suggested the risk of developing type 2
diabetes( 糖尿病 ) and heart disease, or dying early, rises by as much as 20 percent
after just two hours a day in front of the box.
England’s Chief Medical Officer,Sally Davies,said,“Physical activity
offers huge benefits and these studies are in favor of what we already know — that
a sedentary(久坐的) lifestyle carries additional risks. We hope these studies will
help more people realize that there are many ways to get exercise.”
77. We can learn from the passage that_______.
A. whether you watch TV or not has nothing to do with how long you will live
B. if an adult watches TV for six hours every day, he will die five years earlier
C. physical inactivity and obesity won’t shorten your life
D. a sedentary lifestyle offers huge benefits
78. The word“it” in the second paragraph refers to _______.
A. a sedentary lifestyle
B. eating
C. smoking
D. obesity
79. What do we know from the last three paragraphs?
A. People in the United Kingdom watch TV longer than those in the United States.
B. That a sedentary lifestyle carries additional risks isn ’t supported by other
studies.
C. Watching TV for two hours a day will increase the risk of illnesses or dying
early by 20%.
D. It is through these studies that we know a sedentary lifestyle carries
additional risks.
80.The passage is intended to _______.
rm the readers of a research on watching TV
B.warn the readers of the harm of watching TV and hope they do sports
C.tell the readers watching TV is also a good way to relax
D.tell the readers large amounts of people often watch TV

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit and that can be a very annoying thing.81Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1. 82
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer’s disease( 早老性痴呆症), according
to a recent study.83Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There’s evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.
2. Go for a walk.
Mildly raised glucose ( 葡萄糖 ) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down
to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your
brain.84
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play
cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激 ) limits the weakening effects
of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time.85Or go dancing with your friends.
A. Focus on the future.
B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.
C. It should be something like learning gardening.
D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.
E. But don ’t worry if your schedule isn’t filled with life-changing events.
F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.
G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.
