During the early years of American settlement, a new form of English was beginning to develop in the islands of the West Indies and the southern part of the mainland, spoken by the incoming black population. The beginning of the seventeenth century saw the emergence of the slave trade. Ships from Europe traveled to the West African coast, where they exchanged cheap goods for black slaves. The slaves were shipped in terrible conditions to the Caribbean islands and the American coast, where they were in turn exchanged for such products as sugar and molasses. The ships then returned to England, completing an “Atlantic triangle” of journeys, and the process began again. Britain and the United States had outlawed the slave trade by 1865, but by that time, nearly 200 years of trading had taken place. By the middle of the nineteenth century, there were over four million black slaves in America.
The policy of the slave –traders was to bring people of different language backgrounds together in the ships, to make it difficult for groups to plan rebellion. The result was the growth of several pidgin forms of communication, and in particular a pidgin between the slaves and the sailors, many of whom spoke English. Once arriving in the Caribbean, this pidgin English continued to act as a major means of communication between the black population and the new landowners, and among the blacks themselves. Then, when children came to be born, the pidgin became their mother tongue, thus producing the first black Creole speech in the region. This Creole English rapidly came to be used throughout the cotton plantations, and in the coastal towns and islands. Similarly, creolized forms of French, Spanish and Portuguese emerged in and around the Caribbean.

Our planet is getting warmer, and ice at the North and South Poles is melting. Global warming may be happening on Mars too.
When the sun shines on a planet, the planet’s surface reflects some of the sunlight back into space. Some other sunlight gets absorbed and warms the planet. Light-colored surfaces, such as white ice caps, reflect more sunlight than dark surfaces do. By contrast, dark surfaces absorb more of the sunlight, which makes them get hotter.
Scientists who have compared pictures of Mars taken by satellites in the 1970s to images taken more recently have noticed that the Red Planet’s surfaced looks different than it used to. In
some areas, the landscape looks much darker, while in others, it looks lighter. On the whole ,the surface of Mars—especially in the planet’s southern hemisphere—has grown darker over the past 30 years.
Most of those changes probably occurred because Martian winds blew away light-colored dust that had covered many regions. That exposed darker rocks that had been covered with dust.
The darkening of Mars has caused the planet to get warmer, a new study suggests. Scientists calculated how much more sunlight and heat Mars absorbs now. They compared that to how much it absorbed in the late 1970s. The y estimate that the planet’s atmosphere is almost 1℃ warm, on average, than it was 30years ago. Some areas of mars have warmed more than average. For example, the planet’s south pole may be 4℃warmer than it was in the late 1970s.
48. 30 years ago, the surface of Mars looked________.
A. lighter

C. as dark as it is now
D. as light as it is now

50 The biggest temperature change may happen in _______.
A. the northern hemisphere of Mars

C. the north pole of Mars

When nature takes something away from a person, it rewards him or her with something else. When someone loses one or more senses, the surviving senses become stronger. This may or may not be true, but history gives many examples of disabilities that not only did not break a pers on’s spirits. On the contrary, it inspired the greatest talents in him or her.
Fanny Crosby was blinded by an illness at the age of 6 weeks. Though her life was not easy, she never gave up. Known as an American hymn writer and poetess, Fanny Crosby wrote over 9.000 hymns during her life. She entered the.NY Institute at the age of fifteen, and afterward taught English and history. She lived a long and useful life, helping the poor and never complaining about her fate.
Ray Charles, a famous and multitalented African-American singer, songwriter, and pianist, lost his sight at the age of 7. He studied music, piano, and Braille at School for the Deaf and Blind in Florida. He went on to pioneer soul music, which became enormously popular among both black and white audiences. His style was influenced by soul music, rhythm and blues, and jazz. To this day he selects and produces his own music with a complete disregard for current trends. He is also known as an active fighter for African—Americans’ civil rights.
A premature birth, and the complications that followed, took away the ability to see from Stevie Wonder, but not his musical gift. As a child he mastered several instruments, and even formed a band by the age of ten. A winner of numerous music awards, Stevie was famous for romantic hits that earned him the admiration and respect of fans from all over the world. His blindness only made him feel deeper, and express it “from the bottom of his heart.”
These well-known musicians proved that blindness cannot be an obstacle to a full and meaningful life. Every member of society must have the chance to fulfill his or her dreams.
52. What may be the main factor that leads to the success of Fanny Crosby, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder

Dear Clement,
I received your letter two days ago. Thank you for your letter. Now I will tell you something about reading classics in our school. The majority of students in our school think reading classics can help us know about some cultures and customs all over the world. And it can also cultivate our minds and improve our characters. Besides, we can learn something from classics because they have something to do with life today. However, some students think the language used in them is quite different from that used today, which makes them difficult to read. They also think classics are old-fashioned and boring.
Personally, it is necessary to read classics in our spare time. Because we can enrich our daily life, At the same time, we can care about nature and society by reading classics, so I like classics very much.
How about you?
Best wishes,
Yours,
Li Ping。
