第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Customers who come into the Waffle House recognize server Evoni Williams, a soft-spoken 18-year-old from Texas City. It all started with a Facebook post. On the morning of March 3, Laura Wolf was eating breakfast at the Waffle House in La Marque when she overheard an older man, who reminded her of her late father, tell Williams he had trouble with his hands. The man, later identified as regular customer Adrien Charpentier, had an oxygen tank nearby and needed help cuttin g up his food. “Without hesitation,” Wolf wrote, Williams “took his plate and began cutting up his ham.”
Impressed, Wolf posted the moment on her Facebook page to share the warmth and kindness with all. The following day, Williams’s Facebook notification(关注)began to light up. Her friends saw Wolf’s post and tracked her in it.
Williams had no idea that someone took a photo that morning. The diner was so busy that a line extended outside the door. She said helping Charpentier was reflexive. She has been working at Waffle House since last June to save for college, and this, she figured, was just the right thing to do. “I would want someone to help my grandmother or grandfather,” Williams said.
The post began to make its rounds in La Marque and eventually landed in front of the city’s mayor, Bobby Hocking. He decided to declare March 8 as Williams’s day, and also received an email from Texas Southern University President Austin A.Lane, asking if the school could present Williams with a scholarship.
Williams still works at Waffle House five days a week and plans to do so until she starts classes in the fall at Houston-based Texas Southern. Wolf said Williams does not have a car to get to classes, but some people have offered to start a GoFundMe page for her, proving that a moment of a kindness can change a life.
1、Why did Wolf post the photo on Facebook?
A.The photo reminded her of her late father. B.It could satisfy her inner needs.
C.She was touched by the sight. D.The customer had trouble with his hands.
2、What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Without a second thought. B.After careful consideration.
C.Winning a reward. D.Better serving customers.
3、What can we infer about Evoni Williams?
A.She seldom saw Charpentier come to the House for breakfast.
B.It was GoFundMe page that led to her good luck.
C.She is no longer working in service business.
D.She has probably received a scholarship for her college education.
4、What is the author’s purpose of writing the article?
A.To help Williams receive higher education.
B.To introduce a random act of kindness.
C.To show that young generation can always help.
D.To emphasize the influence of the social media.
22.(8分)DINERS
TONY SOPRANO’S LAST MEAL
Between 1912 and the 1990s, New Jersey State was home to more than 20 diner manufacturers who made probably 95 percent of the diners in the U.S, says Katie Zavoski, who is helping hold a diner exhibit. What makes a diner a diner? (And not, say, a coffee shop?) Traditionally, a diner is built in a factory and then delivered to its own town or city rather than constructed on-site. Zavoski credits New Jersey’s location as the key to its mastery of the form. “It was just the perfect place to manufacture the diners,” she says. “We would ship them wherever we needed to by sea.”

GOOD FOOD, GOOD TUNES
Suzanne Vega's 1987 song “Tom's Diner” is probably best known for its frequently sampled “doo doo doo doo” melody rather than its diner-related lyrics. Technically, it’s not even really about a diner — the setting is New York City’s Tom's Restaurant, which Vega frequented when she was studying at Bamard. Vega used the word “diner” instead because it “sings better that way,” she told The New Y ork Times. November 18 has since been called Tom’s Diner Day, because on that day in 1981, the New York Post's front page was a story about the death of actor William Holden. In her song Vega sings: “I Open /Up the paper/There’s a story /Of an actor /Who had died/While he was drinking.”

MEET THE DINER ANTHROPOLOGIST
Richard J.S. Gutman has been called the “Jane Goodall of diners” (he even consulted on Barry Levinson’s 1982 film, Diner). His book, American Diner: Then Now, traces the evolution of the “night lunch wagon,” set up by Walter Scott in 1872, to the early 1920s, when the diner got its name (adapted from “dining car”), and on through the
1980s.Gutman has his own diner facilities (floor plans, classic white mugs, a cashier booth); 250 of these items are part
of an exhibit in Rhode Island.

23.(8分) A rainy day can be a chance to recharge. While you relaxed on the sofa with a movie, the raindrops falling on your windows might one day provide the power for your TV. This is the idea behind an invention that harvests energy from water.
The technology is based on the triboelectric (摩擦电的)effect. An engineer at the University of Hawaii, David Ma knew that it’s possible to generate electricity by rubbing two things together. So, he thought, “Why don’t we use water?”
A drop of water sliding across a surface coated with two different materials would generate enough friction to create an electrical charge. By placing metal wires that the drop of water touched as it moved, it should be possible to harvest electricity, he reasoned.
It worked. In fact, the researchers lit up 15 LED bulbs with a single moving water drop.
This is not the first time that scientists have got electricity from water-generated friction( 摩擦). Earlier experiments, though, harvested the charge produced in a surface by a sliding drop of water. There, the surface had acted as an electrode(电极). This is different. The energy of friction is being harvested from the water itself.
“It turns out,” Ma says, “the charge in the water drop is way more than the charge produced in the other electrode.” In fact, his team’s model generated almost 100 times more power than previous experiments from a single drop of water.
“The technology could someday power phones, sensors or other small electronics,” says Christopher Oshman, an engineer at the Colorado School of Mines. “This work is a step toward harvesting the energy of moving objects all around us, including ourselves, to power the electronic appliances we use every day,” he says.
Ma has shown that the technology can work in a lab, Oshman says. Next, the Colorado researcher would like to see it tried on a larger scale, such as on an umbrella.
1、How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By telling a story.
B.By raising a question.
C.By giving an example.
D.By imagining a situation.
2、What does the underline d word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The wire. B.The drop of water.
C.The surface. D.The electricity.
3、What is unique about Ma’s technique compared with earlier experiments?
A.The water itself acts as an electrode.
B.It is based on the triboelectric effect.
C.It produces electricity from water-made friction.
D.It uses a surface coated with two different materials.
4、What does Oshman say about Ma’s technology?
A.It has a promising future.
B.It will do well on an umbrella.
C.It works well in the real world.
D.It will replace batteries someday.
24.(8分)Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, it also increases pollution and wastes energy and water. Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunken or eaten. To drink it, you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship large amounts of Ooho bubbles(水泡) without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is targeting large outdoor events, such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to produce Ooho; they have recently applied a patent for their new advancements. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco, Boston, at conferences, festivals, and so on.
Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $ 1 million and gained 1,000 investors in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at t he moment to keep the consumer’s interest while the production machine is getting up and running. It is quickly making a rise,so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future.
1、How is most plastic dealt with in America?
A.It’s sold. B.It’s recycled.
C.It’s buried. D.It’s wasted.
2、Why did the team invent Ooho?
A.To make a profit for a company. B.To protect the environtnent.
C.To make people eat as they drink. D.To reduce the cost of plastic bottle.
3、What can we infer about Ooho from the text?
A.It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.
B.It has become popular since it began to be sold.
C.It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.
D.It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.
4、What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?
A.Ooho is to be a success in the future.
B.Ooho is being supported by smart people.
C.Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now.
D.Ooho is being produced to attract more investors.
25.(10分)Michelin inspectors, the super secret spies of the restaurant industry, are the anonymous(匿名的)keepers of the famous Michelin star rating. They've been writing anonymous reports of restaurants for over 100 years.
"We say it's a little like the CIA,"said inspector "M" with a laugh. She asked that her identity not be revealed. "My whole life is staying under the radar, staying away from cameras, using fake names, trying to steal in and out of restaurants quietly."
Along with their boss,Jean-Luc Naret, the director of the Michelin Guide, about 90 inspectors around the world decide which restaurants will win the cooking equivalent(等价物)of an Oscar, the Nobel Prize and Mega Millions
jackpot(头奖)all at once. The Michelin Guide covers 23 countries, and out of the45,000 rated restaurants, less than 100 have the top rating — only nine American restaurants carry three stars.
If the name "Michelin" brings the tires on your car to mind, you're not too far off. The Michelin rating began in France in 1900 as a marketing trick. The Michelin brothers thought their customers would buy more tires if given a list of hotels and restaurants to explore.
Inspector "M" admitted being an inspector leads to a lonely dining life. " Most of the time we dine alone,"she said. "It gives us the ability to really focus on the food and the atmosphere and capture the entire experience. "To cover their tracks,"M" said sometimes two inspectors will dine together and write two separate papers. It's better than saying "table for one",right?
"When you're really, really into food and very crazy about food, everything else that's going on around you isn't so important," she said.
1、The underlined words "under the radar" in Paragraph 2 mean "___________"
A.living in danger
B.being the focus of the media

D.making programs on the radio
2、The Michelin rating was first carried out in order to _____________.
A.open more hotels and restaurants
B.bring more convenience to drivers
C.make people familiar with "Michelin"
D.make a profit by selling more tires
3、Sometimes two inspectors dine together so that they can ___________.
A.cut the expense on the food
B.protect their identities
C.save trouble by sharing a paper
D.talk about the food over the meal
4、What would be the best title for the text?
A."M" works for the CIA
B.The legend of Michelin brothers
C.Michelin inspectors: food industry spies
D.Michelin — a giant in tire and restaurant industry
