The United States is one of the few countries in the world that have an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.
Historians have recorded that there was a tradition to celebrate a day for fathers even thousands of years ago. Their study say that 4,000 years ago in Babylon a son called Elmesu carved a father's day message on a clay card. In his message Elmesu wished his father a long and healthy life.
However, in modern times the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a
Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
The noble idea of celebrating Father's Day became quite popular in US so much so that President Woodrow Wilson approved of the festival in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea but it was President Lyndon Johnson who signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
Most commonly, children give Father's Day cards and flowers to their father. Neckties are a popular gift on the occasion of Father's Day. Due to the tradition of giving gifts, cards makers, florists and gift sellers campaign for Father's Day Festival in a big way and cash in on the sentiments of the people.

Time never had any importance to me until I received a watch from my father that organized my life and made me more responsible.
I received this gift on a gray-sky day. I had to go to the airport at 9:00 a.m. to pick up my uncle Ali and take him to my father’s house. However, I was late because I was hanging out with my friends. Later that day, around 11:00 a.m., I remembered my uncle, but I was very late. He had already left the airport and taken a taxi to my father’s house.
I got to my father’s house at 2:00 p.m. on the same day and looked at my angry father’s face. I felt ashamed. After I said hi to my angry father and tired uncle, my father asked me to sit next to him and handed me this watch as a gift. Then he asked, “Eric, did you have fun with your friends today?” I answered, “Yes, father, and I am sorry about not picking up my uncle.” He said, “What you did was not very nice and you should be sorry for your actions.”
I was ashamed. “Father, I’ll never do it again. I promise.” Then he replied, “I hope today you learned something important, and this watch will be a reminder for you.” He told me to take this watch and use it as an organizer of my life.
I learned a very important lesson from my father that day: to respect time and never be late to meet someone. This watch is important to me, not because of its price, but because of the lesson that I learned from it.

Today I enjoyed my first Father's Day as a father. My wife worked hard to make the day special and it started when she made me a nice breakfast. Then we spent the morning at church and then went out for a nice lunch at a place where I'd been longing to go for a while. The afternoon was spent at the pool eating ice cream and cookie cake.
I've become a dad, so what does Father's Day mean to me now? Well, I guess the day is really about appreciating my dad. I'd say the last 10 months saw all the hard work my parents did for my son. They have to work even harder now as my son Sawyer is moving around and getting into everything.
I've always appreciated the hard work my dad did, though I seldom talked about it. I come from many generations of bluecollar workers and three generations of workers of Ford Motor Company. My dad spent more than thirty years working at Ford and is still working for a city water department. I recall he would sometimes work seven days a week and sometimes until midnight. He seems to enjoy working with his hands and is good at cars and fixing things. I'm not nearly as good at cars as my dad. I spent one night working a midnight shift at an M&M factory and decided never to do it again.
Growing up I didn't have to worry about whether I'd have food to eat and now I still call my dad whenever my car makes a funny sound. Some of my sweetest memories are wrestling with my dad, and driving with him in his truck to Grandpa's with the windows down.
Thanks for working hard all those years and taking care of us, Dad.
