12. “Meet me in the conference room with the contracts and a cup of coffee,” my boss barked at me. “Ten minutes. ”
I didn’t respond. I stood still as if my shoes had been glued to the floor. I had no intention of taking
a cup of anything to anyone, supervisor or not.
I had seen with my own eyes what such behavior did to a woman. It happened to Mrs. Wilson next door. Old Mr. Wilson couldn’t put in his own false teeth without his wife’s assistance, let alone make himself lunch. It was a miserable union. I vowed by age eight that I would never live like her.
I adopted the motto: Don’t help those who won’t help themselves.
I rushed to the file room and pulled my phone. I explained to my father what had happened and asked his advice on what to do, only to be asked back. He must have forgotten the unwritten rule between us about not answering a question with a question. Fortunately, I came up with an idea that would have the best of both worlds.
I took up the files and headed for the coffee pot. I took two cups and made two cups of coffee. Then I walked into the b oss’ office with a cup of coffee in each hand. I handed my boss a cup of coffee and drank at the same time as him.
“Let’s take a break,” partway through the meeting, my boss stood, saying. “I need more coffee.” I picked up my empty cup. “I do, too,” I said, and handed it to him across the table. “Thanks,” I added, looking at him expectantly. The boss was staggered for a moment, and then took the cup from me.
When I finally left my boss’ office, I hid in the bathroom and called my dad. My father’s laughter o n the phone made me feel even prouder.

13. “Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday” Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining,Tori brags,“You bet I did,Sean told me two days ago. ”
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly,Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is(a)not nice and(b)not even true. Still,Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of
our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip:it can hurt people,it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out–that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is,the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it?The answer lies in another effect of gossip:the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group”. In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感).
Gossip also can have a third effect:it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.
1. Why is a conversation given at the beginning of the passage
A.To introduce a topic. B.To present an argument.
C.To tell a story. D.To clarify the writing purpose.
2. What important negative effect does gossip have
A.Breaking up relationships. B.Embarrassing the listener.
C.Spreading information around. D.Causing unpleasant experiences.
3. Why do many people like to gossip
A.It gives them a feeling of pleasure. B.It helps them make more friends.
C.It makes them better at telling stories. D.It enables them to meet important people
4. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can
A.provide students with written rules
B.make people watch their own behaviors
C.force school to improve student handbooks
D.attract the police's attention to group behaviors
14. We always hear that text ing, which refers to the communicative practice of sending brief messages on cell phones or other personal digital devices, is a disaster. The idea is that text ing leads to the fall of writing ability among young people because it is full of informal language. As a matter of fact, it isn’t true. In order to see that text ing is actually a whole new way of writing that young people are developing, we have to look at what language really is.
Basically, if we think about language, it has existed(存在)for centuries, and it appears as speech. W. talked. That’s what we’re probably genetically determined. That’s how we use language most. Writing is something that came along much later. But writing has its advantage, When you write, you can make the content smooth, colorful and elegant with language, which is much less likely if you’re jus t talking. It is because writing is a conscious(有意识的)process and you can look backwards.
Informal speech is something quite different. Linguists have actually shown that when we’re speaking informally in an unmonitored way, we tend to speak in words 7 to 10 as a group. You’ll notice this if you ever have an occasion for recording yourself or a group of people talking. That’s what speech is like. Speech is much looser and less reflective(反思的)-very different from writing. Texting is a new way of writing, because texters use writing skills before texting. People will process information in more creative uses of language during texting. When they use informal language in their texts, many understand there are different communicative situations. They try shortening language for correct spelling of a word or a phrase. Texting also allows texters much time to form their thoughts and provides many opportunities for them to revise their ideas Moreover, texting positively exercises texters’ rhetorical(修醇的)skills. Since texts are written in various styles, people must know how to match the style of a text with its message.
Now we have an overall understanding of text ing.
1. How does writing differ from speech?
A.It came before talking. B.It is an unconscious process.
C.Its style is less strict. D.It can be improved again and again.
2. What does the underlined word “looser” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stricter. B.Richer. C.Freer. D.Harder.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.What is speech exactly.
B.How text ers learn to write.
C.How text ers send message successfully.
D.The relationship between writing and text ing.
4. Which statement about text ing does the author agree with?
A.It is another form of writing. B.It is less reflective.
C.It is the same as speaking. D.It is a disaster.
15. How to learn English well
All English learners want to improve their English, but as you know, it can be difficult! For you, you need to work on all areas. The four main areas for you are: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Speaking

Listening
Like speaking, it’s better for you to be in a totally English-speaking environment. It’s also good to watch TV shows, or movies in English. 3 But the more you listen, the more you’ll get. It’s good to listen to something over and over again. First, try to get the general meaning, and then, listen a second time for more in-depth information.
Reading
Reading English is something you can do to help you learn in your own, outside of the classroom. Newspapers are good for higher-level students. One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother,Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith,“Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.”
Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”
He st ared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word,“I want to take the handphone.”
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision,Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the handphone.”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.
