How to Make Public Transportation Better
Public transportation is really important for helping people get around cities without having to drive cars. Buses, trains, subways, and other public transit allow those who can't drive or don't have cars to still travel to work, school, stores, and other places they need to go. It cuts down on traffic and pollution from too many cars on the road. However, there are some big problems with public transportation that need to be fixed to make it better for everyone.
Better Accessibility
One of the biggest issues is that many public transit stations, bus stops, and vehicles aren't easy for people with disabilities to use. My grandpa is in a wheelchair, and it's really hard for him to get on and off buses and trains without issues. The stops and stations often don't have good ramps, elevators, or spaces for wheelchairs. Vehicles frequently don't have enough open floor space or secure tie-downs for wheelchairs. People with other disabilities like being blind or deaf can also struggle with things not having good accessibility features like braille, audio announcements, or visual displays.
Public transit absolutely needs to be upgraded everywhere to follow accessibility rules and make it easier for people with disabilities to safely ride. Ramps, elevators, priority seating, audio/visual displays, braille signs, and more should be standard. Public transit agencies should work directly with disability advocacy groups to understand what upgrades are needed.
Cleaner and Safer Rides
Another big problem, especially on buses and subway trains, is that the vehicles and stations are often really dirty, smelly, and don't feel very safe. I've seen seats covered in gross stains, floors that are sticky, and windows scratched up with graffiti. No one wants to ride on transportation like that! It makes the whole experience really unpleasant. There have also been cases of crime happening on transit which makes a lot of people afraid to ride, especially at night.
To fix this, public transit agencies need to make cleanliness and safety much bigger priorities. Vehicles and stations should be deep cleaned every single day, not just once in a while. There need to be more regular employees or security guards whose job is to keep everything clean and safe by monitoring problems. Installing more security cameras can also help make people feel safer. If the environment is well-maintained and secure, it will go
a long way in getting more people to embrace public transportation.
Better Routes and Schedules
Another issue that drives me crazy is how confusing and limited the routes and schedules can be for buses and trains, especially in smaller cities or suburban areas. Routes don't always provide efficient or direct paths to get where you need to go. You might have to take a really roundabout way or transfer between multiple vehicles to get somewhere that should be a straight shot. The schedules also provide service on very limited days and times, so if you need a ride really early in the morning or late at night, you're out of luck.
Routes need to be carefully analyzed and potentially redesigned to make sure they provide the most direct service possible to key locations that people need to travel to and from. Instead of a ton of winding neighborhood routes, it's better to have more core routes that hit major streets and transfer points. The days and hours that service is provided needs to dramatically increase as well to make public transit an option for more people at all hours, not just morning and evening rushes. This will require investing in more vehicles and staff, but that's a worthy investment to make transit convenient for all.
Greener Transportation
The last big issue I want to talk about is that most public transportation vehicles still use environmentally-unfriendly gas and diesel for fuel which creates emissions that pollute the air. With climate change being such a big threat, we need to rapidly transition to greener public transit. Electric buses, trains, and other vehicles need to go mainstream as soon as possible to cut down on emissions from transportation.
A lot of cities have started converting some of their bus fleets to use electricity instead of gas and diesel, which is a great start. But it needs to happen much faster and on a bigger scale. The technology already exists for safe, long-range electric vehicles perfect for public transit routes. By combining electric vehicles with other sustainable efforts like using solar power for stations, composting, and recycling, public transit can really lead the way in being an eco-friendly way for everyone to travel.
If we can improve public transportation by making it more accessible, clean, well-scheduled, convenient, and environmentally-friendly, it will benefit so many people. More people will choose to regularly ride transit instead of driving, which cuts down on traffic and emissions. It becomes a better experience for those who have no other choice but to use public
transit. Overall it makes cities better places to live when there is good public transportation available for everyone to use. I hope leaders and government officials make fixing these problems a priority!。
