第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. On this occasion, the work was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children. Later, I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.
I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.
It was, I should point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger children should have been in bed, and when the two older children should have been answering the phone. “I’ll give him a lesson,” I said. I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10:30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.
Finally, in desperation, I called his girlfriend’s house. After what seemed like countless rings, his girlfriend answered. “Yes,” she said brightly “He’s right here.”
He came on the phone. I was not my usual calm, rational (理智的) self. After all, one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modern teenagers. “Where are the children? ” I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. This was too good to be believed. Well, it turns out that I sh ouldn’t have believed it. It was only part of the truth.
The following Saturday evening we were at my parents’ home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son
gave me the children’s gifts. Mounted (裱好的) and framed were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.
56. The author went out and left her eldest son in charge of the younger children because ____.
A. she knew that her eldest son was a good baby-sitter

A. They had a birthday party.
B. They framed some photographs.
C. They had their pictures taken.
D. They made some beautiful clothes.
59. What does the author intend to tell us by the story?
A. Modern teenagers are not worth trusting.
B. It is no easy job to look after young children.
C. It’s no good to have a girlfriend at an early age.
D. Her children have a caring heart.

Faust is an excellent historian known especially for her work on the of the American South. She was a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania for 25 years. In 2001, she became dean (院长) of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard.
Born in 1947, Faust grew up in a traditional family. She has often spoken of her “continued confrontations (对抗)” with her mother “about the requirements of what sh e usually called femininity (女性特质)”. Her mother used to tell her, “It’s a man’s world, sweetie. And the sooner you learn that, the off you’ll be.”
However, the daughter was a rebellious one. For example, Faust would fight with her mother over whether it was suitable for her to drive a car at night, even if one of her three brothers was a passenger. was raised to be a rich man’s wife,” said a friend, Elizabeth Warren. “Instead she becomes the president of the most powerful university in the wo rld.”
As a girl, Faust rebelled against not only the strict rules of femininity, but also the racial injustice that existed in her native Virginia. At age 9, after a conversation with her family’s black handyman (杂务工) and driver, she sent a letter to President Dwight D. Eisenhower decrying (谴责) racial injustice. When studying in Bryn Mawr, a women’s college in Pennsylvania, she was a student activist who would go on march in the civil rights protests (抗议) in the 1960s.

Labor force is defined (定义) as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.
Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if there were a balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds (超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases, proportion of the workforce declines.
Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are not enough numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population is top-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate.
The age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue (税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.
67. In the passage “labor force” is defined as _______.
A. people who are available to work and earn income
B. self-employed people only
C. people who are looking for an employment
D. employers who create job opportunities
68. The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that _______.
A. a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforce
B. a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforce
C. the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforce
D. the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution
69. When a population is said to be aging, _______.
A. there are more people retiring than those entering the workforce
B. the birth rate must be growing
C. there should be an oversupply of workforce
D. There are more people entering the workforce than those retiring
70. According to the passage, which of the following factors is NOT mentioned as an influence on the
workforce?
A. The size of the population.
B. The age distribution of the population.
C. The national economy.
D. The number of births and deaths.

Treasure Our Lives
With the number of cars increasing in cities, traffic accidents occur frequently, calling serious attention across the globe and becoming a major concern in our society today.
Frightening news never stops shocking people. May 7th witnessed a terrible accident due to drag-racing in the city center of Hangzhou, causing immediate death of a Zhejiang University graduate, who was then crossing the road. On June 30th, drunk driving in Nanjing resulted in five deaths and four injuries.
Painful lessons quite set the alarm bells ringing. Harmonious society calls for people who treasure their lives as well as their family and the society itself. Drivers should always put their responsibilities on top of everything and say “no” strongly to drunk driving. For the sake of safety, pedestrians are never too careful while crossing streets.
It is time that governments took steps to prevent drunk driving. Severe punishment should be carried out without mercy whether it is drag-racing or drunk driving. As students, we should always slow down while approaching crossroads and never run red lights. Only when everybody obeys traffic rules can we enjoy a happier life.

W: Are you busy tomorrow night? I’ m going over to the Workers Club for volleyball, would you like to come along? M: Isn’t that far away?
W: Not really. If you take the No. 3 bus, you can get there in fifteen minutes. And if volleyball doesn’t interest you, they’ve got a huge indoor swimming pool, a weights room, and indoor tracks. It’s a great place to meet people.
M: Now that you mention it, it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a change, and I really should get some more exercise. Working up a sweat in a ball game or the weights room would be nice. I’ve got so fat.
W: Look at me and then you know you’re not the on ly one. In high school I had a lot more time to do sports. Now whatever little spare time you have must be used in doing exercise. At least the club is open until 12 pm.
M: I guess it’s worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night?
W: Yeah.
M: OK, I’ll come, too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we’ll catch the bus there
W: Sure, see you then.

M: Yes, I know. I decided to work through the evening rush hour.
W: And so your dinne r’s cold. Why do you work so hard?
M: I just start, and then I can’ t stop.
W: You can stop at any time. You don’t need to keep on working at all.
M: And then what would I do?
W: We could move to Florida.
M:Oh, Florida. Is it any better than New York?
W:It’s war m and sunny all the year round. No more snow,no more ice.
M:And what about the children and the grandchildren?
W:They could come and visit us every winter.
M:And what would we do every spring, summer and fall?
W:A lot of our friend、have moved to Florida. We know a lot of people there.
M:Well,I’1l think about it.

Hello, I was once a hostess. Now I am on my first bus trip and I’m quite surprised at the services offered during the trip.Included are meals on the way, rest rooms and public-address announcements.
Just now,I introduced myself to the hostess on the bus,and we told each other about experiences on air and ground travel.
At lunchtime, she gave out menus offering a choice of sandwiches. As she began filling orders, she found that there weren’t enough egg-salad sandwiches. She quickly went to whisper to the driver. The bus soon stopped. The hostess ran to another bus that was all the time following ours, and soon she returned with a box of egg-salad sandwiches. As she passed my seat, she asked,“Could you do that on a plane?”。
