Part 3 Reading and Writing (第三部分阅读和写话)
VIII. Reading comprehension(阅读理解)
A. Choose the best answer(选择最恰当的答案)
It's good to have friends that we can talk to and share our thought and opinions with. More importantly, they're people we can ask for help or advice. But recently it seems, many of us are
developing a new relationship with a person that we'll never meet!
I'm talking about virtual(虚拟的)assistants or bots. These are pieces of software(软件)that we can talk to and it can talk back to us. Example include Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant, Amazon's Alexa and Microsoft's Cortana. It might be on your phone or computer or even a smart speaker in your home. They are changing the way we interact(互动)with technology - instead of typing on a computer keyboard or tapping on an IPad, we can now speak and a voice will answer.
The people behind these voices are called conversation designers. Tom Hewitson is one of them. He said, "this is kind of changing computers into like an agent. They are taking an active part in the interaction and guiding you to make the right decision." So he's saying this technology has the ability to think for itself and make its own decisions.
It is a frightening thought that this virtual voice can think for you --will it stop us from thinking and will we lose the ability to write things down or type? They are certainly clever, helping you to book train tickets, give you the latest weather news or even tell you a joke. But are they really your new best friend?
One thing we can't do yet is to make small talk with it. We have to change the way we speak. As Tom Hewistson says "We will develop our own kind of language for speaking with machines that will be different from how we speak to other people ... Very few words are used but to the point."
But there's no doubt this technology will soon be commonplace in our lives. In 2018 Google Duplex came out, described by the company as artificial intelligence (AI) "for managing to finish real-world tasks over the phone". It's a type of chat-hot that will allow you to, for example, chat to your hairdresser about when they can fit you in for a cut. Other companies are working on almost the same things. But before they make this new technology perfect, don't forget who your real friends are!
1. According to Paragraph 2, how do you communicate with a virtual assistant?
A. By typing on a computer keyboard.
B. By tapping it.
C. By using your voice
D. By using a smart speaker.
2. According to the passage, what can't this new technology do for you at present?
A. Booking train tickets
B. Making small talk with you
C. Chatting to your hairdresser to book a haircut
D. Telling you the latest weather news.
3. What does the "They" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Conversation designers
B. Agents
C. Your voices.
D. Computers.
4. According to the passage, what is the writer afraid of?
A. This technology manages to finish real-world tasks over the phone.
B. There is no difference between the ways we speak to other people and machines.
C. We may finally stop using our brains.
D. This technology can write things down or type for us.
5. According to the last sentence of the passage, what does the writer probably mean?
A. We should never give up interacting with our real friends.
B. When this technology is perfect, the virtual assistants or bots can be our new best friends.
C. We can make this technology perfect with our real friends
D. Our real friends are perfect and we should stay away from this technology.
B. Choose the words and complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词,完成短文)
We know it's good to learn another language. It opens doors, gets you a good job, helps you make new friends, and it's fun too. But to make our linguistic(语言的)skills better, many of us have to stand hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. Then technology seems to be __1__ a better and easier way of learning.
There is surely a huge need for language learning, and having a smart-phone means you can have a virtual(虚拟的)teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are __2__ making money on the need, and there are lots of learning apps. One of many popular apps, Duolingo, offers 91 courses in 30 languages and has more than 300 million users.
Some educational(教育的)apps provide languages not __3__ enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer 'invented" language lessons in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek's Klingon -- lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace and promise you some other good things. But they're not perfect --you might not understand the grammar well and will lose the support from real people, which you could get in a classroom environment.
So, does technology mean the __4__ of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He says that apps aren't opposite to traditional teaching. But should be used together with classroom methods. And he adds: "The apps are very conversational ... they're not designed for __5__, but they could be useful tools."
Of course technology is going to help in and outside the classroom, __6__ attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher probably make you willing to be more hard-working.
Motivation(动机)can be a problem when using an app. But if you have a strong hope to learn another language, you will certainly be able to keep going.
1. A. changing B. offering C. teaching D. realizing
2. A. interested in B. worried about C. afraid of D. responsible for
3. A. exciting B. modern C. good D. popular
4. A. mistake B. use C. end D. help
5. A. money B. degrees C. interest D. culture
6. A. but B. because C. if D. after
C. Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words(在短文的空格内填入适当的词,是其内容通顺,每空格限填一次,首字母已给)
My 11-year-old daughter. Miriam, holds her iPhone like a newborn. It's always with her. During the social isolation(社交隔离)brought on by the pandemic, it has also saved her.
TikTok(抖音)is her favorite activity after she finishes home-schooling. She feels most cheered, pleased and safe in the TikTok world. "Why don't you red a book?" I suggest. "Mom," she sighs(叹着气说), "everything is making me so sad, I need TikTok. I need to get away and e__1__ that world right now."
Who could say that was wrong? I want to escape, too.
As a professor of child and youth studies at Brock University, who has studied girls' culture for over 20 years, I have c__2__ watched Miriam using TikTok with a growing interest since the pandemic. I have just looked at Miriam laugh and dance all by herself with curiosity(好奇)and envy(妒忌). What was I missing?
TikTok provided my daughter with an escape, b__3__ at also offered her information, like-minded people, connection and a way to get rid of daily stress(压力). Miriam showed me
TikToks that expressed different feelings about COVID-19. Young people were speaking to each other about how to "get through this". And then there were the dances. In each dance the TikTok-er needs to do d__4__ but interesting moves in a perfect way, hit the beat and know the lyrics(歌词)to the songs. Mriam was a dancing queen.
I wanted a piece of the feeling that filled her with such joy. I wanted to laugh like she did and dance as if no one was watching. I wanted Miriam to take me into her world.
"Show me," I finally said. "Show me how to do one of the dances."
She put her phone up a__5__ the computer screen in my tiny home office. Suddenly, I was no longer the professor doing research. I was a TikTok-er, and I wanted to get this right.
I don't know if I would lose myself again in a TikTok dance with my daughter or the state of the world, but I heard the words catch in my t__6__ as I replied: "Sweetheart, I think we have the time of our lives."
D. Read the passage below and answer the following questions(根据文章内容回答下列问题)
"Work" and "play" have long been seen as enemies(敌人). When you're preparing for an exam or meeting a deadline, every minute spent on anything other than studying seems to be a waste of time. Going to a movie or playing basketball with friends? Out of the question.
Javad Alizdeh, a PhD student at the University of Manitoba, Canada, used to have the same belief. And it turned out that he was wrong.
In an article published in Nature magazine on April 29, Alizadeh shared his experience of letting go of both his hobbies --soccer and violin -to make room for his studies. And yet he finally found himself in a rather uncomfortable condition: "more worried and tired, but less productive(生产力高的)", he wrote. And that was when he decided to bring "play" back into the picture.
In fact, many big companies have seen the importance of "play" in their employees' productivity(生产力)and well-being.
Google, for example, has gyms(健身房)that open 24/7, which shows the company's idea "to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world". And at Amazon, employees are allowed to bring their dogs to work. "If I need to take a break after an intense(紧张的)meeting, I'll take my dog out for a walk," Anna Jentoft, an employee at Amazon's headquarters in Seattle,
told Time. "It makes me comfortable and relaxed."
It seems that these people don't see "work" and "play" as the two ends of a scale(天平)--when one and goes up, the other is certain to go down. To them, "work" and "play" are more like two pieces of jigsaw puzzle(拼图), which co-exist(共存)with and complete each other.
So next time when you prepare for an exam, try to take a break from "work" once in a while, and let "play" ________________.
1. According to Paragraph 1, what do people think of "play" before an exam?
2. Javad Alizadeh fainlly let go of both his hobbies to make room for his studies, didn't he?
3. Why does Google have gyms that open 24/7 in the company?
4. Why does the writer use the examples of Google and Amazon?
To tell the readers ________________________________________________.
5. According to the passage, what is the relationship between "work" and "play"?
6. Complete the last sentence in the passage.
So next time when you prepare for an exam, try to take break from "work" once in a while, and let "play" ________________________. (No more than 5 words)
