Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor
The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is located in Lintong county, near Xi’an city, capital of Shaanxi province.
A total of 8,000 life-size terracotta warriors, chariots and horses, and hundreds of bronze weapons have been
unearthed from it. Many state leaders and experts worldwide believe that the discovery of the mausoleum is a major archeological find and can be called the eighth wonder of the world, paralleling Egypt’s pyramids.
Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement
Gulangyu Island, known in the local dialect as Kulangsu, is located on the entry of the Jiulong River, facing the city of Xiamen. The island was occupied by at least a dozen countries, including Great Britain, France and Japan. As a result, Western culture grew rapidly there in the 19th century, especially music. With such a harmonious blend of Western music and Eastern culture, Gulangyu is naturally referred to as the “island of music”. It is famous for its outstanding musicians and musical instruments.
Qinghai Hoh Xil
Hoh Xil, which means “beautiful girl” in Mongolian, is located in the north-eastern end of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve is China’s largest and the world’s third largest uninhabited area. Because of the high altitude and fierce weather, it is impossible for people to live there, and therefore, it is a paradise for wildlife and home to more than 230 species of wild animals including endangered species such as the Tibetan antelope, which is recognized as the National Class I Protected animal.
Huangshan Mountain
Huangshan, known as “the loveliest mountain of China”, lies in the south of Anhui province in eastern China. The scenic area covers 154 sq km, and is famous for its peaks, rocks, pines, clouds and springs. It also has a rich cultural heritage. Xu Xiake, a famous traveler of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), visited Huangshan twice, and described it in a poem, calling it the best of all mountains in China. Today it holds the same fascination for visitors, poets, painters and photographers.

22.(8分)Blue Planet II’s latest episode focuses on how plastic is having a disastrous effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastic in their stomachs. Indeed, the oceans are drowning in plastic.
Though it seems now that the world couldn’t possibly function without plastics, consumer plastics are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s; the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining in popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science.
We put all these plastics into the environment and we still don’t really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.
And it’s not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster, worth mentioning to the same degree as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don’t have to remake our planet energy system.
This is not a problem where we don’t know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to dispose (处理) of it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use
single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag----when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.
1、Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?
A.The plastics pollution research is too difficult.
B.Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.
C.The world couldn’t possibly function without plastics.
D.Plastics have gained in popularity too fast for science to catch up.
2、How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3?
A.By statistics.
B.By quotations from leading experts.
C.By using examples from his own experience.
D.By comparison and contrast.
3、What can we infer about climate change?
A.Climate change is caused by human activities.
B.Some people hold some doubts about climate change.
C.Climate change is less important than ocean pollution.
D.Ocean plastic is more complicated than climate change.
4、What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Ocean plastic is a global issue.
B.The oceans become choked with plastic.
C.Blue Planet II has left viewers heartbroken.
D.Plastics gain in popularity all over the world
23.(8分)Think plants are just boring green things that you use for food and decoration? Think again! Plants ar e able to do some pretty awesome things that you’re probably totally unaware of.
Researchers have discovered that plants have the ability to communicate with an underground network made up of fungus (真菌) , which serves the plants in many ways. Tomato plants use the fungus web to warn each other of their own unhealthy conditions. Trees connected through the fungus network could move nutrients (养分) to and from each other. It is believed that larger trees move nutrients to smaller ones to help them to survive.
Not only that, but they can also damage unwelcome plants by spreading poisonous chemicals through the fungus. It sounds like the plant world had the Internet before we did.
Some plants have a rather impressive line of defense against being eaten. When sensing they are being swallowed, they give off a chemical into the air that attracts the insect’s natural enemy. The enemy attacks the bug, thus saving the plants. This is basically the plant kingdom version of getting your older brother to beat up that kid who steals your lunch money.
You might be aware that humans and animals have an internal clock. But did you know that plants also have this clock? This means they can prepare for certain times of day just like we do. Is it because they can react to light at sunrise? In a study, scientists found that plants use the sugars they produce to keep time, which help to regulate the genes responsible for the plant’s own internal clock. So, in a sense, ―wake up with petunias (矮牵牛) is just as valid
as ―wake up with th e chickens.
Nature is full of surprises. So for those of you who didn’t know the wonders of plants, now you do.
1、How many ways does the network of fungus serve the plants?
A.Two. B.Three.
C.Four. D.Five.
2、What does the underlined words ― “your older brother” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The chemical given off by plants. B.The insect’s natural enemy.
C.The bug attacked by the enemy. D.The plant to be eaten by the insect.
3、What helps the plant keep time?
A.The sugars produced by itself. B.Its own genes.
C.The time of sunrise. D.Its response to light.
4、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To show his love of different plants.
B.To share his study on some awesome plants.
C.To introduce the unknown abilities of plants.
D.To make people aware of plant protection.
24.(8分)For years the Italian city of Venice has been struggling with a few concerns. Saint Mark’s Square is often flooded. Venice’ s waterways require repairs. But, by far, the biggest problem is the rapidly growing number of visitors to the city.
So city officials have decided to require all visitors to pay a fee to enter Venice. The money will help to pay for cleaning and other services that help to keep the city beautiful.
Venice’s Mayor Luigi Brugnaro explained the decision to inter national media during a visit to Rome last week. “Venice is a wonder of the world and only in this way can it be saved”, the mayor said. “The fee process will be experimental at first”, he added.
A one - day visit will cost about $ 7. City officials have yet to decide when the fee collection will begin. The money will be collected by transport companies that bring the tourists to Venice. The city will set up cameras for those arriving in private cars. And there will be fines for those who do not pay the fee. Students, some workers and children under the age of six will not have to pay- Naturally, anyone born or living in Venice is exempt.
City officials hope this will prevent the overcrowding that often comes with large numbers of tourists. Some people living in Venice say they do not believe the fee plan will work, Lawyer Roberta Pierabon says it will be impossible to collect the money from everyone who visits the city. Visitors arrive from all sides. She does not believe tourists can be controlled and added that she disapproved of the plan. Other Venetians like the idea. They say it will make tourism less aggressive. Venetians love their city and know it will never stop appealing to visitors. Venice is so special, they say, that it belongs to the whole of humanity.
1、What is the biggest problem that arises in Venice?
A.The visitor boom. B.The poor city service.
C.The frequent flood. D.The waterway repair.
2、How will city officials deal with the big problem?
A.By educating citizens. B.By charging fees.
C.By doing experiments. D.By turning to media.
3、What does the underline word “exempt” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Asked to stay. B.Permitted to settle.
C.Required not to enter. D.Allowed not to pay.
4、Who opposed the fee plan?
A.Mayor Luigi Brugnaro. B.All Venetians.
C.Lawyer Roberta Pierabon. D.City officials
25.(10分)“Do you like my dress?” She asked of a passing stranger. "My mommy made it just for me." She said with a tear in her eye.
"Well, I think it's very pretty, so, why are you crying?"
With a tremble in her voice the little girl answered. "After mommy made me this dress, she had to go away."
"Well, now," said the lady, "with a little girl like you waiting for her, I'm sure she'll be right back."
"No Ma'am, you don't understand," said the child through her tears, "my daddy said she's up in heaven now with Grandfather."
The woman realized what the child meant, and why she was crying. Kneeling down she gently gathered the child into her arms and together they cried for the mommy that was gone. As the woman intended to go, the little girl grabbed her sleeve, pointing to a spot on her dress, saying, "Here is where my mommy kissed my dress, and here," pointing to another spot, "and here is another kiss, and here, and here. Mommy said that she put all those kisses on my dress so that I would have her kisses whenever I cry."
Then the lady realized that she wasn't just looking at a dress, she was looking at a mother who knew that she was going away and would not be there to kiss away the hurts that she knew her daughter would get. 2、Mom put the spots on her daughter’s dress to __________.

D.the mom kissed the skirt here and there to comfort her daughter.
