“Learning Chinese is growing popular in the United States.” Doty said. She was pleasantly surprised to find in the Chinese Bridge competition that many people of her age were learning Chinese, with many of them speaking more fluently than shedoes.
"Although it is difficult with some of the grammar structures because it is very different from English, it is really worth it and you can use it a lot in the world," said Doty, whose Chinese name is Huang Qiuyue.
Hoffs also shared her opinion. "Many people have recognized that they should have got on this train earlier.... It is still a rather unique skill.
"I believe that in a time when skills are scarce ... the people who do possess that unique perspective and unique connection with China will be more highly valued," she said, adding that studying Chinese also gave her an edge in her universityadmission.
She said her main essay submitted to Stanford was about how she chose her Chinese name and what that name meant to her.
"Choosing that name helps me better understand myself. I chose Jiang because when I traveled to Lijiang, I just fell in love with it. I chose Mingxi to express my desire for greater clarity and to live a clearer and more thoughtful life," shesaid.
According to the nonprofit US-China Strong Foundation, about 500,000 students in the United States
are currently learning Chinese, twice the number of 2017.

Great civilizations dating back to the Egyptian empire, the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire have all used trade routes as part of their economy. Perhaps the most famous ancient trade route known today was“The Silk Road”. The recent BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) mirrors this in many ways. It’s a way to connect the vast continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia in a similar manner as the ancient Silk Road did for the purpose oftrade.
Trade between all the countries proposed in the BRI is possible today. But the BRI will make trade moreefficientthroughnewlybuiltroads, railways, andshippingports. Theproposedinfrastructure(基础设施)is throughmutual(双方的)agreement, notthrough threatsofmilitary intervention. Ifacountry
does not want to participate, they can simply refuse. It is their decision.
Could the BRI eventually become sort of an Interstate Highway System for the continents and countries of Europe, Africa, and Asia? Nobody can predict the future but it seems like a possibility. In the near term the BRI seems to consist primarily of railways and shipping lanes but there appears to be highways being built alongside in many cases. Besides, railways can be more efficient ways for people to travel than by motor car. Either way, the BRI would open up more travel and tourism as a result of its primary purpose of trade in the near term.
One of the most impressive parts of the BRI, in my eyes, is that it aspires(追求)to be a peaceful
expansion between nations of open trade. China is spearheading the project with the assistance of the AsianInfrastructureInvestmentBank (AIIB) (亚投行). TheAIIBisalsoaneconomicendeavorof financial cooperation among most, if not all, the countries involved with the planning of theBRI.
Opening cooperative trade routes can come at a better time for China and the rest of Asia, Europe, and Africa. The result will be a massive infrastructure program that will cover most of Asia, parts of Europe and parts of Africa, which will enable free trade across these threecontinents.
28.What does the underlined word mean in the firstparagraph?
A.changes
B.reflects
C.differs
D.separates
29.Which of the following is NOT true about theBRI?
A.The BRI can improve the efficiency oftrade.
B.In the near term, the BRI consists mainly of railways and shippinglanes.
C.The expansion of the BRI is through threats and militaryforces.
D.Any country can join the BRI if it wantsto.
30.What does the author think of theAIIB?
A.It only offers assistancetoChina.
B. It is a part of theBRI.
C. It is the financial cooperation amongfewcountries.
D. China is playing an important part init.
31.The attitude of the author towards theBRIis.
A.optimistic
B.pessimistic
C.objective
D.skeptical

Text10
Cars are an important part of life in the USA. Without a car, most people feel that they are poor.
There are three reasons the car has become so popular inthe USA. First of all, the country is a large one and Americanslike to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortableand cheapest form of transportation. The second reason is thefact that the USA has never really developed an efficient andinexpensive form of public transportation. Though there is agood system of air service provided, it is too expensive to beused frequently. The third reason is the most important one. The American sense of independence is what really makescars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a trainor even a plane. A car gives them the freedom to schedule theirown time.
