My Good and Bad Habits
Everyone has habits, whether good or bad. I have some habits that I think are good, and others that I know I should try to change. Let me tell you about some of my habits!
Good Habits
One of my good habits is that I always make my bed in the morning. My mom taught me to do this when I was little, and now it's just a part of my daily routine. I think it's important to start the day by accomplishing a small task like making my bed. It makes me feel organized and ready to take on the rest of the day.
Another good habit I have is reading every night before bed.
I love getting lost in the worlds of different books, and reading helps me relax and wind down after a busy day. My parents have always encouraged me to read, and I'm grateful that they instilled this habit in me from a young age. Reading has also
helped me improve my vocabulary and writing skills, which has been really helpful in school.
I also try to practice good manners as often as possible. I always say "please" and "thank you," and I try to be polite and respectful to everyone I interact with. My teachers and parents have complimented me on my manners, and I think it's important to be kind and considerate of others.
Bad Habits
Unfortunately, I also have some bad habits that I'm trying to work on. One of my worst habits is procrastinating. I often wait until the last minute to do my homework or study for a test, and then I end up feeling stressed and overwhelmed. I know I should start working on assignments as soon as I get them, but sometimes I just can't seem to find the motivation.
Another bad habit of mine is biting my nails. I've been doing this since I was a little kid, and it's really hard for me to stop. My parents and teachers have tried to get me to break this habit, but I always end up going back to it when I'm bored or anxious. I know it's not a very hygienic habit, and it can make my nails look unsightly, but it's just so hard to quit.
I also have a tendency to leave my belongings lying around the house. My room is often a mess, with clothes and books scattered everywhere. My mom is always nagging me to clean up after myself, but I just can't seem to get into the habit of putting things away as soon as I'm done with them.
Changing Bad Habits
I know that my bad habits are things that I should work on changing. Procrastinating can really hurt my schoolwork and grades, and biting my nails is just plain gross. As for leaving my things everywhere, it's not only messy but also disrespectful to my parents who have to clean up after me.
To try and change these habits, I've been setting reminders on my phone to work on homework and study for tests well in advance. I've also been trying to keep a stress ball or fidget spinner nearby to keep my hands occupied so I don't bite my nails. And I've been making an effort to clean up my room every night before bed, so it doesn't get too out of control.
Changing habits is really hard, but I know it's important to keep trying. My good habits, like making my bed and reading every night, have become second nature to me, so I know it's possible to turn bad habits into good ones with enough practice and determination.

I'm in the 6th grade now, and over the years I've developed some habits – some good ones that help me, and some bad ones that I really need to work on changing. I'll start by talking about my good habits.
One of my best habits is that I always try to get enough sleep. My mom says I need around 9-11 hours per night at my age to
be rested and focused during the day. I go to bed at 8:30pm every school night, even if I don't feel tired yet. Getting that full sleep really makes a difference in how I feel and perform at school. When I'm well-rested, it's easier to pay attention in class, remember what I've learned, and stay energetic for after-school activities.
Another positive habit is that I eat a healthy breakfast every morning before school. My parents make sure we have options like oatmeal, whole grain cereal, eggs, fruit, and yogurt. A nutritious breakfast fuels my body and mind for the first part of the day. If I skip breakfast or just have something sugary like a donut, I get really hungry well before lunchtime and have a hard time concentrating. Breakfast is an important meal that I never miss.
I also have a good habit of staying organized with my schoolwork and belongings. I have a special workspace at home just for homework where I keep all my school supplies. Meanwhile, responsibilities like chores and homework keep getting put off. If I gave in to these technological distractions less often and was more disciplined about setting limits, I'd free up time for more enriching activities.
One final habit I should try to change is not eating enough fruits and vegetables. I tend to fill up on processed snack foods, sugary treats, and fast food which aren't very nutritious. While those types of foods are fine once in a while, I overdo it and end up lacking nutrients my growing body needs from produce. If I got in the habit of preparing healthy meals with my family and choosing fruits and veggies as snacks more often, I'd have more energy and develop better lifelong eating patterns.
Those are some of the key habits – both positive and negative – that shape my life right now as an 11-year-old. The
good habits like sleeping well, eating breakfast, being organized and exercising regularly help me function at my best. The bad habits like procrastinating, being messy, getting distracted by technology, and eating poorly tend to hold me back and create stress.
As I move through my last years of elementary school and prepare for middle school, I'm going to really focus on keeping up the good habits while making an effort to change the bad ones.
