Today, it _is__es_t_im__a_t_e_d_(estimate) that about 60 percent of domestic rice consumption in China is __co_m__p_r_i_se_d_(comprise) of crops _g_e_n_e_r_a_t_ed(generate) from Yuan’s hybrid strains, and his strains have allowed China’s farmers to produce around 200 million tons of rice per year. Yuan’s i_n_n_o_v_a_t_io_n_ (innovate) has helped feed not just China, __b_u__t __ many other countries that depend on rice as well, such as India and Vietnam. Because of his invaluable _c_o_n_t_r_ib_u_t_io_n_s_(contribute) , Yuan Longping has received numerous awards both in China and abroad.
_G__iv_e_n__(give) that Yuan’s hybrids have made him quite wealthy, one might think he would retire to a life of leisure. _H_o_w__e_v_er_, this is far from the case. Deep down, Yuan is still very much a farmer at heart. However, __w_h_e_t_h_e_r_ it was possible to develop a hybrid of self-pollinating plants such as rice was a matter of great debate. The common_a_s_s_u_m__p_ti_o_n_ (assume) then was that it could not be done. Through intense effort, Yuan overcame enormous technical difficulties to develop the first hybrid rice ____th_a_t___ could be used for farming in 1974. UNIT5 WORKING THE LAND
A PIONEER FOR ALL PEOPLE
My life pursuit is to keep all the people away from hunger. ——Yuan longping
Yuan Longping,__k_n_o_w_n_(know) as the “father of hybrid rice”, is one of China’s most famous scientists. Yet, he considers himself a farmer because he _co_n_t_i_n_u_a_ll_y_(continue) works the land in his research. Indeed, his slim __b_u_t__ strong body is just like that of millions of Chinese farmers, to _w_h__o_m___he has devoted his life. Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in Beijing. His parents wanted him to pursue a career in science or medicine. How this, could be done was a challenging question at the time. Yuan _w_a_s_c_o_n_v_i_n_c_e_d_(convince) that the answer could be found in the creation of hybrid rice. A hybrid is a cross between two or more varieties of a species. Ont___ they usually attain a higher yield than conventional crops.
