One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(被子)."Mom, I have a question to ask you." "What?" she replied, still doing her work. "Is there love between you and Dad?"
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. Then she said, "Susan, look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. Love is inside."

4.阅读理解
The human body is a machine that can raise lots of interesting questions. Why, for example, are yawns (呵欠) contagious (传染的)? What's up with ice-cream headaches? Here are answers to these and other questions about our bodies.
Why do I get a headache when I eat ice cream too quickly?
Scientists aren't exactly sure what causes the brain freeze when we eat ice cream or other super cold foods too quickly, though some believe it's the result of changed blood .flow in the nervous system. Blood vessels in the head tighten to stop the loss of body heat and then relax to let blood flow rise; that sudden rush of blood is what causes the headache. You can improve an ice-cream headache by rapidly rubbing your tongue across the roof of your mouth to help warm
up things.
What causes my stomach to make a low continuous noise when I'm hungry?
Actually, your stomach makes noise whether you're hungry or full; you just hear it more clearly when you're hungry. Think of your digestive tract(消化道)as a really long tube lined with smooth muscle tissue. These muscles move food, fluids and gas through your digestive tract. ___________. It can make you feel embarrassed(尴尬的)but is nothing to worry about.
Why do I blush when I'm embarrassed?
When you're embarrassed, your brain releases a shot of adrenaline(肾上腺素), which makes your heart race and blood vessels become larger in size. All this happens to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body in a fight-or-flight reaction(对抗反应). There are a lot of tiny blood vessels in your face, which turn noticeably redder from this sudden rush of blood. As for the actual function of blushing, researchers are still trying to find that one out.
Why are yawns contagious?
Have you ever yawned in front of someone, only to have them yawn right back? It's a common thing, but researchers don't have a good explanation for it. They do, however, know this happens only with humans and chimpanzees(黑猩猩). A bigger question puzzling scientists is why we yawn at all. It used to be thought that yawning showed that oxygen to the brain was not enough, but that's just a myth. A growing body of research now shows that yawning is nature's way of keeping our brains cool.
(1)What is the meaning of the underlined word tighten?
A. 变松
B. 变紧
C. 变短
D. 变长(2)Which of the following sentences can be filled in the blank?
A. And that's what you're hearing when your stomach makes noise.
B. And that's why you're so hungry when your stomach is empty
C. And that's what makes you feel uncomfortable when you're full.
D. And that's how it makes a difference to your digestive tract.
(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. There is no way for you to improve an ice-cream headache.
B. Researchers have found out the actual function of blushing.
C. Your stomach makes noise only when you are hungry.
D. Researchers don't have a good explanation for why yawns are contagious.

8.根据短文内容选择正确答案。

C
Grace, usually known as the Home of Microsoft, is inside an office building in Redmond, Washington. Once you come into the building, you will feel that you're in a modern and future home.
When you enter the building, Grace's voice, coming from a hidden speaker, tells you your messages. In the kitchen, you set a bag of flour(面粉) on a flat stone table. Grace sees what you're doing and makes a menu of flour-based foods on the table. Once you choose one, Grace gives you ingredients(配料).
There's also a notice board in the kitchen made of “intelligent(智能的) cloth” that works like a touch screen computer. You can deal with postcards and invitations and surf the net with the touch of a finger. The invitations could be encoded(编码). You can deal with them on the computer. It's part of Microsoft's Smart Personal Objects Technology, whose aim is to make every object more efficient(有效率的).
“The day when your house becomes a member of your family is not far,” says Pam Heath, a manager of Microsoft. At the Andersen Windows Company, Jay Libby imagines that windows made of intelligent glass can be changed into TVs.
“Nobody wants a television set,” says Libby. “What you want is the service it provides.” If the TV isn't improved, it will disappear in the future.
Home entertainment is one consideration for the future. At the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, scientists are designing systems that will allow old people to live better on their own. So Grandma's home can be cleverly designed to recognize(识别) her ways of waking, sleeping and movement. Family members will be told any change by their computers.
(1)We can know from the passage that Grace _________.
A. is an idea known as the Microsoft Home
B. is a machine that works like a TV
C. can understand what its master does
D. can cook meals for its master
(2)According to the passage, all the following are true EXCEPT________.
A. Grace can help you in the kitchen
B. you can use the computer with a touch screen

D. TV technology needs improving
(3)It can be inferred(推断) from the passage that ________.
A. the building in the future will be intelligent
B. your windows will be changed into TVs
C. few people will like watching TV in the future
D. all the old people will live without others’ help
(4)Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Modern Home
B. Popular Home
C. Future Home
D. Smart Home
【答案】(1)C
(2)C
(3)A
(4)D

根据第一段的描述和第二段tells you your messages告诉你信息; makes a menu of flour-based foods on the table制定面食菜单; gives you ingredients给你配料等,可知Grace应该是一台家庭智能机器,它会看懂你做的事情,并提供必要的帮助,故选C。

(2)推理判断。

根据第二段在厨房的活动可知A是对的;根据第二段that works like a touch screen computer和You can deal with them on the computer可知B是对的;根据第三段 windows made of intelligent glass can be changed into TVs用智能玻璃做成的Windows可以变成电视,并没有要取代电视的意思,故C是错误的;根据第四段If the TV isn’t improved, it will disappear in the future可知如果电视没有改进,它在将来会消失,故D也是对的。

因此选C。

(3)推理判断。

根据最后一段Home entertainment is one consideration for the future和scientists are designing systems that will allow old people to live better on their own可知科学家们正努力使未来的建筑智能化。

故选A。

(4)主旨大意。

根据本文举到的例子“智能厨房”可知,未来的家庭智能化必将是一种趋势。

故选D.智能家庭。

In the UK, Saturday evenings have always been a popular time for families to watch television together. One of the most popular programme genres is the talent show, partly because people of all ages are interested in it.
Early shows, like Opportunity Knocks(1965~1978), required people to vote(投票)for their favourite acts and performers, although in those days voting was done by postcard instead of by telephone, text, or over the Internet. Today, the success of television talent shows has reached a new level. Here are the UK's top three TV talent shows:
The X Factor In this wonderful singing competition, performers have to face a celebrity judge panel(名人裁判组)before the public vote. Many excellent singers became popular because of it. The show is now made all over the world, from China to Colombia.
Strictly Come Dancing The programme is so fantastic that it attracts many celebrities. They team up with professional(专业的)dancers and come to the dance floor to win the title of Strictly Come Dancing Champion.
Britain's Got Talent In this modern-day version(版本)of Opportunity Knocks, the public can go and choose from many kinds of acts, from dancing dogs to ice skating. The prize is to perform for the Queen in the Royal Variety Performance.。
