The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother
and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn’t stop looking at this painting! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.

B. introduce them to the world of art

D. Her mother’s instruction.
59.From the text, we can see __________.
A. the importance of curiosity
B. the effect of art
C. the value of learning
D. the power of family education

A latest national survey has found that over half of China’s netizens(网民)are suffering from various mental problems although some 62 percent of them claim at the same time that they are happy on the whole anyway.
This is the result of China’s first White Paper on Netizens’ Health Conditions issued on Wednesday by , China’s largest authoritative website on health sciences. It is the first most comprehensive health survey on netizens’ health situation ever conducted in China in ten years’ time. The white paper came out after two months of online and offline research that involved over 150 thousand netizens, covering topics and questions on health knowledge, mental situation, sense of health, and living habits.

Meanwhile, another 53 percent of netizens believe that white collar employees who have bigger work pressures are more likely to catch mental problems.
The white paper adds, doing almost no sports and spending long time surfing online lead to the above mentioned health problems among netizens. Only 9 percent of netizens take up sports on weekends while over 40 percent stay home, surfing. And only 16 percent netizens can assure more than eight hours’ sleeping daily.

Be aware of those who use the truth to cheat. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (抽奖). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it i n for one hundred dollars!”
This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic(策略). Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs
and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents challenges, “During Government Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!”That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net(净余的)gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the tr uth. An ad might say, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of l ife: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
64.Which statement is true according to the article?
A. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.
B. You can’t trust gamblers(赌博的人).
C. All governors help their states.
D. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.

A. think carefully about what they read and hear
B. know that the truths are white lies
C. never trust anyone who wins money on the lottery.
D. vote for female candidates
66.Which of the following words(phrases)has the closest meaning to the underlined word “omitted”?
A. included
B. left out
C. contained
D. left behind
(D)
There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language---all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is extremely important to our ability to grow. Do we notice ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to cope with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
67.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?
A. Our manager was always willing to accept challenges.
B. Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
C. Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
D. Father’s salary rose from 5,000 to 7,000.
68.For personal growth, the writer is in favor of ________.
A. being cautious with changes
B. having little interest in new things
C. staying away from failures and challenges
D. having an open mind to new experiences
69.How to understand the last sentence of this passage?
A. We are trapped and injured.
B. Our body is trapped and stops growing.
C. We get stuck in what we are doing and can not achieve real growth.
D. We can’t protect ourselves and are trapped by others.
70.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Facing New Challenges
B. Growth—Product or Process
C. Two Basic Ways of Growth
D. Overcoming Internal Fears

“Happiness consists in the variety of agreeable consciousness,” wrote Samuel Johnson,a famous British writer and lexicographer(词典编写者)of the eighteenth century.
Today, among the large amount of worldly temptations(诱惑)and material sources of modern-day enjoyment, all the people are still searching for the key to happiness. The question “How can we be happy?” seems to worry everyone. Indeed, in this day and age of scientific advancement and heavenly comforts, people still do not seem able to find a definite answer to the age-old problem of finding happiness. Happiness seems to be a very difficult thing. Solon’s dictum(名言)“no man is happy until he is dead” seems to pres ent both the poor and the rich with a continual threat causing them no end of anxiety.
In Oxford, England, a famous psychology professor, Dr Michael Argyle, has succeeded in his search for happiness. Over the past eight years, he has been researching the mysterious antithesis(对立而)of depression, and has found convincing clues which he has embodied in his books, “The Psychology of Happiness”, and “The Social Psychology of Everyday Life”.
Dr Argyle explains that happiness includes three essential elements—first, positive emotions like joy; second, the absence of negative emotions like anxiety; and lastly, the non-emotional element which means a general, more profound satisfaction with life.
“The biggest source of happiness is a happy marriage,” Dr Argyle explains. “Job satisfaction.” he continues, “is another essential ingredient of happiness.”
Do you feel you are doing a useful job? Do you feel you are achieving, or stand a chance of achieving your ambitions? If you honestly have positive answers to these questions, then eventually, you will be happy; if not, then you can still be happy by reducing your ambitions and lowering your expectations in order to achieve happiness. The fact is, the higher your ambitions and dreams are,the more difficult it will be for you to achieve your goals and therefore it will be harder to achieve satisfaction and happiness.
Dr Argyle offers other ways people can take to achieve happiness. Music, games or sports, a drink with a friend, a simple gathering at tea, lunch or dinner with loved ones, or simply thinking of nice things, can give a person happiness, if only for a few hours. Surprisingly, television programmes, especially soap operas offer nothing but a bit of pleasurable moments. Often, television viewers are so carried away emotionally that they feel depressed or emotionally tired. Non-soap programmers, on the other hand, bore many viewers or sometimes deepen their sadness. Dr Argyle further explains that wealth and worldly success do contribute to happiness. But in the ultimate(最终的, 最后的)analys is, Dr Argyle says, it is the person’s temperament (性情)that makes him happy or unhappy. “There are among us people who are naturally happy, and there are the sad ones.”
Happiness is indeed mysterious. As one wise man put it, “Few are those who have never had the chance to achieve happiness, but fewer are those who have never taken that chance.”
71.The writer quotes Solon’s dictum in paragraph 2 to prove that ________.
A. happiness is everyone’s business

A. Happy marriage.

C. High ambitions.
D. Wealth and power.

A. do more harm than good
B. offer only limited enjoyment
C. should be avoided altogether by viewers
D. are a nice source of enjoyment

A. the character of a person is largely affected by his working environment
B. there are people who are born happy or unhappy
C. there are people who blame others for their low self-esteem
D. most people often feel depressed because they worry about what other people think of them.

Dear editor,
I have already read in the newspaper that home pollution does great harm to the environment. Many people think that environmental pollution is caused by industry, and it has little to do with family. But researches show that industrial pollution makes up 41% of the total pollution, whereas home pollution makes up 59%.
Experts say that each person makes about 0.9 kilogram of rubbish every day. Plastic bags, waste gas sent out by refrigerators, air-conditioners and cars are very harmful to man. So we must realize the seriousness of home pollution and try our best to prevent home rubbish from polluting our environment.
Yours,
Li Hua。
