12. Don't look now, but that tree may be watching you. Several lines of recent research suggest that plants are capable of __________and may even possess something like an eye, despite a very simple one.
The idea that plants may have “eyes” is ,in a way, nothing _________ . In 1907 Francis Darwin, Charles's son, assumed that leaves have organs that are a combination of lens-like cells and light- sensitive cells. Experiments in the early 20th century seemed to ________ that such structures, now called ocelli(单眼), exist, but the concept of a “seeing plant” fell by the wayside—only to ________in the past few years.
In a recent issue of Trends in Plant Science, Frantisek Baluska, a plant cell biologist at the University of Bonn in Germany, and Stefano Mancuso,a plant physiologist at the University of Florence in Italy, lay out new_______ for visually aware vegetation. To make their case, the researchers first point to the 2016________ that Syn-echocystis cyanobacteria (蓝藻), single-celled plants capable of photosynthesis, act like ocelli. “These cyanobacteria use the entire cell body as a lens to focus an image of the light source at the cell membrane (膜), as in the retina(视网膜)of an animal eye,” says University of London microbiologist Conrad Mullineaux, who helped to make the discovery. Although researchers are not sure what the
purpose of this mechanism is, its________ suggests that a similar one could have evolved in higher plants. “If something like this is already present at the lower level of evolution, it is most likely _______ Baluska says. Recent work also ________ that some plants, such as the cabbage and mustard relative Arabidopsis, make proteins that are involved in the development and functioning of eyespots--the eyes found in some single-celled plants.
These ______ specifically show up in structures called plastoglobuli, which are known for giving autumn leaves their red and orange colours. “This discovery suggests that plastoglobuli in plants may _______ eyespots,” Baluska says.
Other observational research reveals plants have visual capabilities we just do not________ yet. For instance, as reported in 2014 in Current Biology, the climbing wood vine Boquila trifoliolata can somehow modify its leaves to imitate the colors and shapes of its host plant.
Although the evidence for eyelike structures in higher plants remains _______, it is growing. “I had never heard about plant vision, and I would have dismissed it as______ until my own discovery of cyanobacteria acting as a camera eye,” says biotechnologist Nils Schuergers, co-author of the 2016 study on Synechocystis. The next ________ is to confirm the early 20th-century experiments showing that plant cells themselves can act like lenses—and researchers still need to figure out all the ends to which plants put their sight.

六、阅读理解
13. People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can
also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy winter”, which means a left-handed person.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great.
Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.
These include Hawaii's “hammajang” which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, " lookers" or “duckers”.
It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word “ frog-drowner” , which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” to people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.
“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED's editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.
The appeal is called Words Where Y ou Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include,” said Maier.

A.hammajang B.dockers C.brick D.ahoo
2. Which local word of the following is most likely from regions of the United Kingdom?

旨在介绍和解释QR码的起源、发展和应用,并展示了QR码的发展前景。

16. QR (Quick Response) codes can be found everywhere. Y ou can even find a number of them distributed throughout this magazine, each skillfully different from the last. They are a development of the bar code, and a necessity in the digital age. However, you might not know where they come from.
If it hadn’t been for Hara Masahiro, QR codes might not have entered the mainstream at all. He was working for Japanese company Denso wave in the 1990s, when the limitations of bar codes were becoming apparent. They could only hold 20 characters of information, but the increasing efficiency of technology required a code with more capacity. Inspired by the black and white pieces on a Go board, Hara created a square pattern that included positional information telling the scanner which way to read it. As a result, QR codes can store information both horizontally (水平地) and vertically, packing a considerable amount of information into a relatively small space.
After Hara’s breakthrough, it took some time before QR codes began to be commonplace. At first, they were used in automobile manufacturing (自动化生产), where manufacturers in other industries quickly found that the code’s ability to contain so much detail was great for efficiency, as well as helped them respond to consumer demands for greater transparency (透明度) in production and shipping, and this led to the codes becoming more widespread.
Another thing that boosted their popularity was Denso wave’s decision to make QR code specifications public so anyone could use them. Hara and his fellow developers wanted everyone not only to access the codes, but to also come up with new ways to implement them. As for what the future holds for QR codes, Hara says, “Black and white codes have become so common now. I’d like to create more spectacular codes that can stimulate people.”
1. Why was QR code created?
A.To reduce the cost of production.
B.To increase safety of business trade.
C.To satisfy the demand of increasing efficiency.
D.To improve the convenience of living efficiency.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The widespread of QR codes.B.The advantage of QR codes.
C.The advancement of QR codes.D.The application of QR codes.
3. What is Hara’s attitude toward the future of QR codes?
A.Negative.B.Unclear.C.Doubtful.D.Hopeful.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.QR codes: Particularly Popular B.QR codes: Especially complicated
C.QR codes: An invention by accident D.QR codes: An outcome of hard work
