第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide.
As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies’ Association in London for t he promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls’ school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys’ school.
Mrs. Gutzlaff’s comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father’s friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff’s school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff’s School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.
1、How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff’s school?
A.Through his father’s friend’s help.
B.Through his own efforts to exams.
C.Through his father’s request.
D.Through Mrs. Gutzlaff’s influence.
2、Why did the author’s parents put him into an English sc hool?
A.An English school was more influential.
B.Foreign trade with China was developing fast.
C.It met with Chinese public opinion.
D.He could become a successful interpreter.
3、What did the author think of his parents’ decision to put him into an Englis h school? A.It was skeptical. B.It was mysterious.
C.It was thoughtful. D.It was wonderful.
22.(8分)The World Health Organization says that the disease polio is no longer widespread in India. In 2009,half of the world’s cases of polio were there. But In 2011, there was only one new case of polio in the country.
Polio is caused by a virus. It spreads very quickly from one person to another. Victims often lose the use of their arms and legs. In the most serious cases, polio can kill a person.
Twenty-five years ago, polio affected about 200, 000 children in India each year. The United Nations children’s organization, UNICEF, sent teams. of health workers into local villages. Team members told families in their neighborhood about the importance of giving liquid medicine to children to protect them against polio.
But it was not easy at first. A member said, “They used to think that our children will not be able to have children when they grow up if they get the drop. They used to think like this. But now they don’t. Now they allow their kids to get the drops.” Now things have changed. Asma Khatun is a mother in the town of Ghaziabad in the northern state of Utter Pradesh. She said, “Whenever anyone comes, we get the children vaccinated(接种疫苗). Even if nobody came to our house, we would send our children to a clinic to get vaccinated.
A local Muslim leader says the vaccination campaign has been successful because it is supported by religious leaders. He said, “The polio vaccination campaign has been successful here because our Muslim scholars are with us.
With their support, we are able to make people understand that giving children the
vaccine is beneficial and crucial.”
The Indian government has now launched a new campaign to vaccinate 170 million children under the age of five. The campaign will target newborn babies, migrants and people living in poor, crowded areas where the disease spreads more quickly.

2、We learn that when parents in India were first advised to get their children vaccinated, they .

23.(8分)I spent most my twenties working for the National Park Service, and I lived a wide variety of government housing, including several shabby but appealing old houses where the wild creatures outnumbered humans. Sometimes I wondered, lying awake at night, how many hearts beat inside those walls. With all that lovely national park habitat protected for their use, why did the animals need to live in my house?
My latest essay “The indoor wilds at outdoor parks,” revisits my experiences with wild (non-human!) roommates and officemates in Rocky Mountain National Park. At
first, they were considered annoying but not dangerous. Attitudes changed dramatically when hantavirus (汉他病毒) came on the scene, and suddenly those cute,
non-housebroken deer mice became a threat. When I moved on to Canyonlands National Park, I found that every effort had been made to seal off my house from
four-footed intruders. These efforts mostly worked and later employees moved into new housing. But somehow a rat still managed to chew its way through the floor and drown itself in my toilet. I’m not even going to get started about my coworkers, experiences with other much scarier animals.
The Beaver Meadows Vistor Center in the story was designed by Tailiesin Associated Architects, Frank Lloyed Wright’s firm, after Wright’s death. Working there, I always thought the building was strange. I recently revisited the building while researching a chil dren’s book I am writing about the park. I think I get it now, at least a little.
1、What does the underlined word “their” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Some park visitors’. B.Endangered animals’.
C.The author’s coworkers’. D.The author’s wild roommates’.
2、Why did people show a change in attitude towards deer mice?
A.Because a virus was spreading. B.Because people were hurt by them. C.Because people saw a really cute one. D.Because they protected people’s houses.
3、What can we infer about the livin g conditions of the author’s coworkers?
A.They were unknown to the author. B.They were acceptable to the author. C.They were no better than the author’s. D.They were much better than the author’s.
4、After visiting the Beaver Meadows Vistor Center again, the author ________. A.could appreciate it better B.finished a children’s book
C.did research on national parks D.knew it was designed by Wright 24.(8分)Even when you’re extremely busy, you aren’t using your time with 100% efficiency. There ar e gaps in everyone’s schedule where they aren’t doing anything important. Even if your schedule has no gaps, there is probably lots of time where you aren’t working as fast or as effectively as you possibly could.
Why aren’t you completely efficient? It’s because time isn’t the limiting factor. If it were the limiting factor, people could work non-stop without breaks or any
unproductive distractions. Instead, people, even those who are highly productive, need to take breaks, occasionally procrastinate(拖延) and slow down on tasks throughout the day.
The real and most important limiting factor for productivity is your energy levels to pay attention. Energy levels limit your productivity because when you’re tired, you can have ample time and still not get everything done. Your attention ability is also limited, because even if there are a million things that need to be done, you can only focus on one or two at a time.
You might not be able to insert another 4-5 hours into your schedule without making some sacrifices. But even extremely busy people can add an hour or two into their schedule without cancelling anything. The reason it’s hard to “find time” isn’t a lack of ti me. It’s because you don’t have enough energy left to focus on something else that needs to fit into your day.
I first suspected time wasn’t the real problem during an extremely busy period in my life over a year ago. I was insanely busy, but at that time I still exercised regularly. I had daily-to-do lists with over twenty items, and I still found time to exercise. However, after a few weeks off, due to illness, I stopped exercising. I was not busy by any standards, in fact, my schedule was incredibly light. Despite this free time, I found it hard to find time to exercise. It seemed to get pushed later and later into my schedule until it was gone. How can I explain this odd experience? I believe you have known it. 1、If someone can’t work with 100% efficienc y, the most important limiting factor is
______.
A.a schedule without gaps B.breaks and distractions
C.the limited time D.the limited energy
2、According to paragraph 4, everyone, including the extremely busy people, can
______.
A.work without any rest B.focus on many things at a time C.find some more time in a day D.do some exercise regularly
3、After a few weeks off, what was the change of the writer’s life?
A.He had a longer daily to-do list with over twenty items.
B.He stopped doing exercise because of the lack of energy.
C.He found it hard to find time to exercise because he was busier.
D.He pushed most of the things later and later in his schedule.
4、The writer gives the example of himself in the last paragraph in order to
___________.
A.prove what the real limiting factor is
B.show us how busily he needs to work
C.explain how important a healthy body is
D.tell us what an odd experience he has
25.(10分)It is not only praise or punishment that determines a child’s level of confidence. There are some other important ways we shape our kids—particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child “Don’t run into traffic!” or “Stay on the footpath close to me.” In using the latter, you wil l be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situation, because they know what to do, and aren’t scaring themselves about what not to do.
Actually, it is all in the way the human mind works. What we think, we automatically rehearse. For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn’t be able to do it. When a child is told “Don’t fall off the tree,” he will think of two things: “don’t” and “fall off the tree”. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind. A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off. So it is far better to use “Hold on to the tree carefully.”
Clearly, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things. Kids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive. “Sam, hold on firm to the side o f the boat” is much more useful than “Don’t you dare to fall out of the boat?” or worse still “How do you think I’ll feel if you drown?” The changes are small but difference is obvious.
Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.
1、Positive choice of words helps kids to ______.
A.do things carefully B.learn in different situations
C.improve their imagination D.build up their confidence
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.One can’t help imagining what is heard.
B.A child will act on what is instructed.
C.A child will fall off the tree when told not to.
D.One won’t think of a blue monkey when given money.
3、Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?
A.Fasten your seat belt.
B.Don’t play by the lake.
C.How do you think I’ll feel if you get hurt?
D.Don’t you dare to walk through the red light?
4、The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A.praise makes kids confident B.right instructions keep kids safe
C.positive instructions guide kids D.clear commands make kids different
