Title: Unraveling Plagiarism in China Author: Jasmine Ako Source: Text A Summary:
Nowadays, there are more and more case of plagiarism in Chinese colleges. Many college students use others' words or ideas without credit. Even some professors are discovered to have borrowed passages from the works of others. But why is plagiarism so prevalent in China? The reason can be listed by the author as follows. First of all, the competitive environment of higher education is particularly conducive for plagiarism. That academic evaluation system puts such a strong emphasis on quantity instead quality of the articles published in order that the students would rather cut corners. Secondly, a crucial factor of history is the traditional education system of China. In ancient China, the government always singles out officials based on their ability to memorize and regurgitate quotes and passages in their essays rather than their creativity. Meanwhile, the policy of economic development also leads to the widespread plagiarism. And how should we do when we confronting this serious phenomenon? What needs to occur is the streamlining of a more standardized system, more open discussion, inquiry and hopefully
the beginnings of understanding. Only in this way can make the plagiarism gradually disappear.。
