When the studio didn’t want me for the film— it wanted somebody as well known as Paul— he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other— but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心)of our relationship off the screen. We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see eachother all that regularly, zxx.k but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.I last saw him a few months ago. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000.And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The govemment has already permitted z&xxkthe company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety siandards.Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Back in 1983,two scientists,Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds,VOCs for short.Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being att acked .It’s a plant’sway of crying out.But is anyone listening?Apparently.Because we can watch the neighbours react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty .They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers.Once they arrive, the tables are turned .The attacker who are natural enemies to the attackers . zxx|k Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study,it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors ,relatively speaking ,stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just ma de a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itse lf. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to ―overhear‖ the cry. So information was exchanged, but i t wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth.Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear.

ARaised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in sever weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached thestop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.A row of hedge(树篱)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching , until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”21. What does the underlined word “grumbled” in Paragraph 1probably mean?A. Accepted happily. Agreed willingly. unhappily.22. What made the author feel upset was ______.A. the tiredness after long hours in labsB. the fear of seeing something movingC. the feeling of being less than valuedD. the loneliness of riding the bushome23. The author’s father watched behind the hedge because ______.A. he was concerned about his son’s safetyB. he wanted to help his son build up courageC. he didn’t want to meet his son at the doorwayD. he didn’t think his son was old enough to walk alone24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. My Father’s Secret.B. My College Life.C. Terrible Journey Home.D. Riding Bus Alone.BTh e British “Daily Telegraph”Traditionally regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, the Boeing 777’s reputation will have been damaged by the second fatal crash in less than a year. There are around 1,000 Boeing 777s in service, and the plane is a long distance machine, travelling some of the longest routes. It entered service in 1995 and the National Transportation Safety Board, which isresponsible for monitoring US-made aircraft ,has recorded fewer than 60 incidents. But the recent record hasn’t been exact with two major incidents-a crash at San Francisco airport last July, which causes three lives, and the crash-landing of a British Airways 777at Heathrow in January 2008.To our sadness, two days ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lost contact flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Malaysian disaster is very different from both the BA incident and the crash involving an Asian Airlines flights at San Francisco International Airport in July , which occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar(雷达)during the early stages of the trip. The accident at San Francisco in July was due to pilot error which led to the engines being set to idle because he believed the computer would maintain sufficient speed to keep the plane up in the air. The BA crash landing, which did not result in any deaths, was finally found to have been caused by a block in the fuel line feeding the engine. However, the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar during the early stages of the trip. No exact explanations have been given for the Malaysia airlines plane crash. Firstreports suggest that Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the 53-year-oldMalaysian airlines pilot, was hugely experienced-having joined the carrier in 1981 and with 18,365 hours in the aircraft under his belt.25. Which of the following is TRUE of the plane crashes?A. There are four plane crashes mentioned in the passageB. The BA incident in July resulted from the pilot errorC. Three deaths were caused in the crash at San FranciscoD. The crash in San Francisco airport was caused by a block26. What can we learn from the next?A. The exact reason for 370crash is not clearB. Flight 370 crash must be similar to the BA incidentC. The experienced pilot of Flight 370 can’t have operated wrongD. Flight 370 must have been taken control of to a different place27. What you read is ______________.A. a noteB. as cheduleC. a reviewD. a news report28. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.A. introduce the Flight 370crashB. show Boeing777’s safetyC. guess the cause of the Flight 370 crashD. compare the causes of these plane crashesCMany of the world’s countries have reached or are approaching zero population growth (ZPG). Nearly all such lands are economically well developed. They include much of Europe(including Russia), the United States, Canada, Japan. And Australia. As the rate of natural increase(RNI)declines, two things happen.First, the population begins to decline if the loss is not balanced by immigration. Second, a country’s population ages because there are fewer births. Is achieving ZPG good or bad? What happens when a country’s population begins to drop? Many people, after all, believe that population decline is a good thing. But is it good for everyone? Does everyone agree? An aging population can create many problems. Senior citizens require more health care and medical attention. Rather than paying into retirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions. In the US, the Social Security program, according to many experts, will be used up by 2018. It will pay out more money than it takes in. Additionally , a great number of jobs go begging in search of people willing or entry levelpositions that pay low wages. With an able to do them. Many of these jobs are aging population, who will fill them? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number of training and highly specialized skills. Who will fill these positions as retirees leave the workforce? The answer to the problem of declining and aging population is simple : increased migration.Today many people, particularly those from less developed countries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willing to take jobs that cannot(or will not) be filled by the domestic population. Others are well educated and highly skilled. Both groups contribute to a country’s economy progress in many ways. Further, they add to the richness of a country’s culture. Of greatest importance, perhaps, is the fact that they have become absolutely necessary to the economy of many lands. As you can see, for many countries and for most immigrants, migration is a win—win situation.29. In the writer’s view, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Not everyone agrees that achieving ZPG is absolutely goodB. Achieving ZPG is every country’s aim in spite of itsside effectsC. Achieving ZPG is bad for senior citizensD. Achieving ZPG is good for employmentto the passage, the best way to solve the problem of declining and aging population is .A. to improve the health care systemB. to increase RNIC. to increase employmentD. to increase migrationmain idea of the last paragraph is .A. the advantages of increased migrationB. the problem of declining and aging populationC. how to increase migrationD. some ways to enrich a country’s cultureDBefore I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are ,the more powerful the joke will be.I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support theygot. The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.32. What did the author find out after studying psychology?A. Only good jokes make people laughB. Many factors lead to people laughing.C. Funny things can make people laughD. Laughter can make people healthy.33. Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.B. The pedestrians behaved ina funny way.C. They could feel the pedestrians’happiness.D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.34. What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?A. AnnoyB. BlameC. Look down onD. Make up to35. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

In many societies, there is often greater acceptance of light skin than dark skin.Light skin may be seen as a mark of beauty, intelligence and success. These beliefs can lead to social pressure even within the same racial or ethnic group,if some members are darker skinned than others. The result is that skin lightening has become a common activity across Africa,Asia and other areas of the world.More and more people with dark skin are using skinlightening products, even if they may face health risks. They believe that having whiter skin will improve their lives. Many people think they will have a better chance of getting a job or marrying into a better family.Or they want to look like what their society generally considers beautiful. Some beauty care products and soaps contain chemicals that make skin lighter. This process is also called bleaching(漂白).But some of the chemicals are extremely dangerous. One of the chemicals has been linked to kidney(肾) damage and some kinds of cancer. It also causes low birth weight in babies when mothers use it during pregnancy. At first, bleaching products make the skin color lighter. But after longterm use they can cause problems. They can even make some skin darker. The chemicals in the products block and break down the natural process that gives color to skin. The skin loses its natural barrier to protect against sunlight. Then the skin can become thick and ually the person will use more of the product in an effort to correct the problem, but this only makes it worse.Doctor Ly,who works in a hospital, says the chemicals are now more dangerous because they are stronger. Some cases have resulted in blackened fingernails, infections and permanent skin damage. And these are not the only risks.Experts say some people whochange their skin color suffer emotional damage. They feel regret and sadness. They feel that instead of risking their health, they should have learned to love and accept their skin color as it was.2阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy.Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies.Interestingly.these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.Family size might cause people to be shy as well.Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy.At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well.Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families. You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shynessin different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy.But in Israel, only one of three people said so.What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true.Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends,or bad luck.In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.For shy people,it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job.But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget—if you are shy,you are not the only one.3阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
