Topic 5Under the sea (Book 7•Unit 3)Ⅰ.阅读理解A话题词数建议用时海上遇险339 7分钟alarm me, and that's how I knew I was asleep, because there was no ice where we were.My door flew open, the engineer shouting, “Get up!”I got out and climbed up to the wheelhouse, and there in front of us was the reef (礁) marker, the one that we aren't supposed to get anywhere near. Our ship ran aground (搁浅地), and in the open waters a 6-foot swell was rolling in over the reef, picking up the ship and dropping us onto the reef with a frightening shake. We were stuck, and were going to break up on that reef if we stayed there. On the cold Alaskan night, if you went into the water, you only had a few minutes before unconsciousness and death came.I started telling jokes. No one was hurt! The ship was still holding together, and we still had the lifeboats. Even when all our priorities (当务之急) shifted to little more than survival, there was much to be thankful for. When you find yourself in that kind of situation, thinking a lot about the failures that got you to that point serves no purpose. Worrying about it will not save anyone, so we went to work. Finally, we got ourselves off the reef and moved slowly over to a bay, with the bottom holed. I'll never forget the feeling of being safe in the bay after that accident.I would like to say that it makes no sense to focus on the 5% which is bad in your life, when 95% of it is good. In truth, even when 95% of it is bad, it still makes sense to be thankful for the 5% that is good. There is always something to be thankful for in a horrible situation, and always something to be learned on a spiritual level. Gratitude isn't just a direct line to happiness; it can also save your life!语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。

Topic 3The United Kingdom (Book 5•Unit 2)Ⅰ.阅读理解A话题词数建议用时英国滑铁卢桥245 6分钟thousands of daily commuters (通勤者) and celebrated as a London landmark, was mainly built by a female workforce. There are no written or photographic records of the women whobuilt the bridge since the construction company that built it closed in the1980s and with it went all the records. What's left is anecdotal evidence, kept alive by the tourist boat captains who have called it the Ladies'Bridge.During the Second World War, with the majority of the active male labor force away at the front, women increasingly took on traditionally male roles. By 1944, 25,000 women were working in the construction industry, carrying out back-breaking tasks. These women were permitted to carry out this exhausting and dangerous work on the basis that it would only be temporary and that their pay would be lower than that of men. So the trend in women working in construction and engineering did not continue after the war.September sees a series of events celebrating the unknown work of the large female workforce. Musician Claudia Molitor has created a 45minute musical entitled “the Singing Bridge”,which runs at Somerset House from 9 to 25 September. In late September, the “Light up the Ladies' Bridge” event sees the National Theatre's fly tower lit up by large scale photographic projections (投影) of female construction workers working in construction during the Second World War.Let's all celebrate the women who have helped to build the cities in which we live.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

标题_2018-2019学年高中三维设计一轮复习英语人教版:Topic 3 Life in the future (Book 5
Topic 3Life in the future (Book 5•Unit 3)Ⅰ.阅读理解ACutting trees in half can help scientists understand the past and now it appears it can be used to predict the future. Researchers have been looking at ring growth from trees to make sense of past weather patterns such as droughts and rain.Combining data from the rings allowed them to create a copy ofpictures of climate changes over the past 2,000 years and this informationcould also be used to foresee the future famine (饥荒), unrest and conflict. The project has been named Old World Drought Atlas, or OWDA.Its main author, Columbia biologist Edward Cook, has already carried out similar projects using trees to create chronological (按年代顺序排列的) maps of droughts in Asia and North America. He believes that combining the three atlases could throw light on the global causes of droughts and climate changes. The study, for instance, gave special attention to the importance of one of such causes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (波动), in affecting climate patterns in Europe, and specifically in making Europe wetter north of the Alps and drier south of them. The OWDA also helped analyse historical events from a climatic perspective. For instance, the 1740-1741 famine in Ireland had so far been explained by an unusually cold winter and spring, but the atlas shows that unusually low rainfall over the spring and summer of 1741 could also have played a role. Finally this made growing food nearly impossible and caused a continent-wide famine.A better grasp of these processes could even make it possible to predict the future famine, unrest and conflict.Cook said, “The Old World Drought Atlas fills a major geographic gap in the data that's important to determine patterns of climate changes in time. That's important for understanding causes of many droughts, and it's important for climate modelers to test hypotheses (假说) of climate forcing and changes.”A.It's the best way to understand the past.B.It could be used to predict the future.C.It could be used to prevent the outbreak of droughts and rain.D.It isn't mentioned in the passage.解析:选B细节理解题。

必修五 Unit 2 高考拆组训练板块练(一) 阅读理解组块训练——练速度(限时:35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·江南十校联考)How did the ancient Chinese keep food warm in winter?Facilities like electric rice cookers and electric kettles make it easy for people to keep food warm. In fact, ancient Chinese people used their own methods of heat preservation.•“Wen Ding”, ancient rice cookerThe “Wen Ding” unearthed in Nanjing in 1989 is thought to be the oldest of its kind discovered in China, dating back to the Neolithic Age. The craftsmanship of making the “Wen Ding” was developed in the Bronze Age. The bronze Ding from the Shang and Zhou dynasties took on different shapes and structures.•“Ran Lu”, ancient small hot potThe “Ran Lu” is a smallsized cooking vessel (器皿) made of bronze. A charcoal (木炭) stove forms the main structure, with a bottom tray to hold charcoal ashes, and a movable cup at the top. Some experts have concluded that the vessel’s structure suggests it may have been used as a small hot pot and that these vessels became popular in the Warring States Period(475-221 BC).•Bronze You, ancient kettleThe Bronze You was one of the most common wine containers during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The Bronze You can also be used to warm wine. For example, the Bronze You with a beast mask design, unearthed in Jiangxi Province, has an opening where charcoal could be placed.•Bronze Yan, ancient steamerAlthough the “Wen Ding” was effective at keeping food warm, the ancient Chinese people later found that its burning produced pollution. As a result, the Bronze Yan was made with a twotier structure and used to steam rice and other grains. Topic 5Inventors and inventions (Book 8•Unit 3)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·of his or her life behind a shopping cart. They will in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated_contraptions many miles. But few will know — or even think to ask — who it was that invented them.Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that timehe was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shopperslugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry. One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets onwheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for hiscustomers, and would help to attract more business. On June 4, 1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention. But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts. “Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied. But Goldman wasn't beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony (假的) customers. As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come — those who came bought more. With larger easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model. Perhaps that's one reason why Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937 — the coming of the shopping cart.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了Goldman发明购物车的原因、经过和结果。
标题_2018-2019学年高中三维设计一轮复习英语人教版:Topic 2 First aid (Book 5
Topic 2First aid (Book 5•Unit 5)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·If you followed the 2016 Olympic Games, you may have noticed that several athletes, including US swimmer Michael Phelps, had circular bruises on their bodies. These bruises were the result of “cupping (拔火罐) therapy”,a traditional Chinese medicinal practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years. Many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy. Phelpsused the therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a weeksince, reported ABC News. Another US swimmer, Dana V ollmer, alsobelieves that “it really helps with blood flow”.However, some have said that the supposed health effects result from people's feeling that the treatment works, rather than any physical effect of the treatment. To figure out cupping therapy has any physical effect, last year researchers from Germany carried out a test in which a false treatment was provided. In the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the false treatment. But in the false treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they couldn't create the proper suction (吸力).The tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that caused a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either traditional cupping or “soft cupping”. But they were not informed that the so-called “soft cupping” was a false treatment. It turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. In both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain. “The results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself,” the researchers told the Live Science website. The question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered.“But because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people, the therapy can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and lifestyle changing,”Dr Brent Bauer, director of the US Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic, told Live Science.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了中国传统医疗方式拔火罐的实际疗效问题。

Topic 5Meeting your ancestors (Book 8•Unit 5)Ⅰ.阅读理解A话题词数建议用时都江堰323 8分钟system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6,000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now standssuffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region's governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problemand discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead, Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20-metre-wide canals were carved through the mountain.Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature —unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了都江堰这一水利工程。
