U1In the 1800s, the Rocky Mountain locust brought massive destruction to western settlers. Then, the insects suddenly disappeared---almost without a trace. Now scientists hope to find a reason for the locust’s extinction. What caused the Rocky Mountain locust to disappear? A scientist, Dr. Lockwood finds the answer. He spent over a decade investigating. He explains that it was humans who were in fact responsible for the extinction of the Rocky Mountain locust.More and more farms appeared in the river valleys to feed the miners. For working on the land, the farmers plowed up the fields and thereby stamped out the delicate eggs that had been laid by the great swarm. By not allowing the eggs to mature into full-grown locusts, the species was entirely destroyed when it was at its weakest when the insects were just eggs. The only extinction of a pest species in agricultural history was in fact an accident.
1 And so I do not have a criminal record. But what was most shocking at the time was the things my release from the charge so clearly depended on. I had the 'right' accent, respectable middle-class parents in court, reliable witnesses, and I could obviously afford a very good solicitor. Given the obscure nature of the charge, I feel sure that if I had come from a different background, and had really been unemployed, there is every chance that I would have been found guilty. While asking for costs to be awarded, my solicitor's case quite obviously revolved around the fact that I had a 'brilliant academic record'. 2 Something was definitely happening here. It was messier than a food fight and much more important than whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable. My kids were doing what Copernicus did when he placed the sun at the center of the universe, readjusting the centuries-old paradigm of an Earth-centered system. They were doing what Reuben Mattus did when he renamed his Bronx ice cream Haagen-Dazs and raised the price without changing the product. They were doing what Edward Jenner did when he discovered a vaccination for smallpox by abandoning his quest for a cure. Instead of studying people who were sick with smallpox, he began to study people who were exposed to it but never got sick. He found that they`d all contracted a similar but milder disease, cow pox, which vaccinated them against the deadly smallpcx. 3 These are the real reasons I teach, these people who grow and change in front of me. Being a teacher is being present at the creation, when the clay begins to breathe. A "promotion" out of teaching would give me money and power. But I have money. I get paid to do what I enjoy: reading, talking with people, and asking question like, "What is the point of being rich?" And I have power. I have the power to nudge, to fan sparks, to suggest books, to point out a pathway. What other power matters? But teaching offers something besides money and power: it offers love. Not only the love of learning and of books and ideas, but also the love that a teacher feels for that rare student who walks into a teacher's life and begins to breathe. Perhaps love is the wrong word: magic might be better. I teach because, being around people who are beginning to breathe, I occasionally find myself catching my breath with them. 4 I walked out of the sunlight, opened a torn screen door and moved into the shadows, where an 87-pound figure was curled up in a wheelchair. Her limbs twisted. Her head rolled. We could not hug. We could not even shake hands. She could only stare at me and smile. But that smile! It cut through the gloom of the battered wooden floor, the torn couch and the cobwebbed windows. I could bear to look at nothing else, so I stared at that smile, and it was so clear, so certain, it even cut through most of my doubts. But still, I wondered. This is Sarah Morris? 5 My shock and embarrassment at finding Mother in tears on Wednesday was a perfect index of how little I understood the pressures on her. Sitting beside her on the couch, I began very slowly to understand. "I guess we al have to fail sometime," Mother said quietly. I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong emotions that were interrupted by my arrival. Suddenly, something inside me turned. I reached out and put my arms around her. She broke then. She put her face against my shoulder and sobbed. I help her close and didn't try to talk. I knew I was doing what I should, what I could, and that it was enough. In that moment, feeling Mother's back racked with emotion, I understood for the first time her vulnerability. She was still my mother, but she was something more: a person like me, capable of fear and hurt and failure. I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I had sought comfort in her arms. 6 "Why don't you try to sleep? I'll make you up for the medicine." "I'd rather stay awake." After a while he said to me, "You don't have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you." "It doesn't bother me." "No, I mean you don't have to stay if it's going to bother you." Your temperature is all right," I said. "It's nothing to worry about." "I don't worry," he said, "but I can't keep from thinking." "Don't think," I said. "Just take it easy." "I'm taking it easy," he said and looked straight ahead, He was evidently holding tight onto himself about something. "T ake this with water." "Do you think it will do any good?" "Of course it will." 7 HARLOWE: (with phony laughter desperately trying to relieve situation) Block party's not a bad idea. (looking around at the others) Anything to get back to normal. STOCKTON: (looks from face to face and slowly shakes his head) Normal? (a pause) I don't know. I don't know what "normal" is. I thought I did, but I don't any more. ——ARLOWE: I told you we'd pay for the damagesSTOCKTON: (stares at him) The damages? (he nods) I wonder if we realize just what those damages are? (he looks from face to face again) Maybe the worst of them was finding out just what we're like when we're normal. The kind of people we are. Just underneath the surface. I mean all of us. A lot of naked animals who attach such great importance to staying alive that they claw their neighbors to death just for the privilege. (he leans against the stairway wall, suddenly desperately tired, very softly as he turns away ……but I wonder if we weren't destroyed even from them) We were spared a bomb tonightwithout it. 8 Now picture yourself -- as vividly as possible --the way you want to be. Remember to picture your desired goals as if you had already attained them. Go over all the details of this picture. See them clearly and sharply. Impress them strongly on your memory. The resulting memory traces will supposedly start affecting your everyday life. They will help lead you to the attainment to your goals. Of course daydreaming is no substitute for hard work. If it's athletic achievement you want, you also have to get lots of practice in your sport. You have to work hard to develop skills. If it's school success you're after, you can't neglect studying Daydreaming alone can't turn you into your heart's desire. But in combination with the more usual methods of self-development, it might make a critical difference. It could be the difference between becoming merely good at something and becoming a champion. 9 Despite his best efforts, Schaechter could muster only 60 singers for the chorus. Emaciated, they gathered on the small stage. Eichmann sat in the front row, dressed in full Nazi regalia. The Jews looked the Nazi in their eyes, and their voices swelled as they sang: The day of wrath, that day shall dissolve the world in ash……What trembling there shall be when the judge shall come……nothing shall remain unavenged. When the performance ended, there was no applause. The Nazis rose in silence. As he left, Eichmann was heard to say, with a smirk,” So they`re singing their own requiem.” He never realized the Jews were singing his. 10 It took only fifty-eight years, however, to go four times that fast, so that by 1938 men in airplanes were traveling at better than 400 mph. It took a mere twenty-year flick of time to double the limit again. And by the 1960's rocket plants approached speeds of 4,00 mph. and men in space capsules were circling the earth at 18,000 mph. Whether we examine distances traveled, altitudes reached, or minerals mined, the same accelerative trend is obvious. The pattern, here and in a thousand other statistical series, is absolutely clear and unmistakable. Thousands of years go by, and then, in our won times, a sudden bursting of the limits, a fantastic spurt forward. 。

Lesson Eight The Kindness of StrangersMike Mclntyre1. One summer I was driving from my home town of Tahoe City, Calif, to New Orleans. In the middle of the desert, I cameupon a young man standing by the roadside. He had his thumb out and held a gas can in his other hand. I drove right by him. There was a time in the country when you' d be considered a jerk if you passed by somebody in need. Now you are a fool for helping. With gangs, drug addicts, murderers, rapists, thieves lurking everywhere, "I don't want to get involved" has become a national motto.2. Several states later I was still thinking about the hitchhiker. Leaving him stranded in the desert did not bother me so much. What bothered me was how easily I had reached the decision. I never even lifted my foot off the accelerator.3. Does anyone stop any more? I wondered. I recalled Blanche DuBois's famous line: "I have always depended on thekindness of strangers." Could anyone rely on the kindness of strangers these days? One way to test this would be for a person to journey from coast to coast without any money, relying solely on the good will of his fellow Americans. What kind of Americans would he find? Who would feed him, shelter him, carry him down the road?4. The idea intrigued me.5. The week I turned 37, I realized that I had never taken a gamble in my life. So I decided to travel from the Pacific to theAtlantic without a penny. It would be a cashless journey through the land of the almighty dollar. I would only accept offers of rides, food and a place to rest my head. My final destination would be Cape Fear in North Carolina, a symbol of all the fears I'd have to conquer during the trip.6. I rose early on September 6, 1994, and headed for the Golden Gate Bridge with a 50-pound pack on my back and a signdisplaying my destination to passing vehicles: "America."7. For six weeks I hitched 82 rides and covered 4223 miles across 14 states. As I traveled, folks were always warning meabout someplace else. In Montana they told me to watch out for the cowboys in Wyoming, In Nebraska they said people would not be as nice in Iowa. Yet I was treated with kindness everywhere I went. I was amazed by people's readiness to help a stranger, even when it seemed to run contrary to their own best interests.8. One day in Nebraska a car pulled to the road shoulder. When I reached the window, I saw two little old ladies dressed intheir Sunday finest." I know you're not supposed to pick up hitchhikers, but it's so far between towns out here, you feel bad passing a person," said the driver, who introduced herself as Vi. I didn't know whether to kiss them or scold them forstopping. This woman was telling me she'd rather risk her life than feel bad about passing a stranger on the side of the road.9. Once when I was hitchhiking unsuccessfully in the rain, a trucker pulled over, locking his brakes so hard he skidded on thegrass shoulder. The driver told me he was once robbed at knifepoint by a hitchhiker. "But I hate to see a man stand out in the rain," he added. "People don't have no heart anymore."10. I found, however, that people were generally compassionate. Hearing I had no money and would take none, people boughtme food or shared whatever they happened to have with them. Those who had the least to give often gave the most. In Oregon a house painter named Mike noted the chilly weather and asked if I had a coat. When he learned that I had "a light one," he drove me to his house, and handed me a big green army-style jacket. A lumber-mill worker named Tim invited me to a simple dinner with his family in their shabby house. Then he offered me his tent. I refused, knowing it was probably one of the family's most valuable possessions. But Tim was determined that I have it, and finally I agreed to take it.11. I was grateful to all the people I met for their rides, their food, their shelter, and their gifts. But what I found most touchingwas the fact that they all did it as a matter of course.12. One day I walked into the chamber of commerce in Jamestown, Tenn. to find out about camping in the area. The executivedirector, Baxter Wilson, 59, handed me a brochure for a local campground. Seeing that it cost $12, I replied, "No, that's all right. I'll try something else." Then he saw my backpack. "Most people around here will let you pitch a tent on their land, if that's what you want," he said. Now we're talking, I thought. "Any particular direction?" I asked. "Tell you what. I've got a big farm about ten miles south of here. If you're here at 5:30, you can ride with me."13. I accepted, and we drove out to a magnificent country house. Suddenly I realized he'd invited me to spend the night in hishome. His wife, Carol, a seventh-grade science teacher, was cooking a pot roast when we walked into the kitchen. Baxter explained that local folks were "mountain stay-at-home people" who rarely entertained in their house. "When we do," he said, "it's usually kin." This revelation made my night there all the more special.14. The next morning when I came downstairs, Carol asked if I'd come to their school and talk to her class about my trip. Iagreed, and before long had been scheduled to talk to every class in the school. The kids were attentive and kept asking all kinds of questions: Where were people the kindest? How many pairs of shoes did you have? Did anybody try to run you over? Did you fall in love with someone? What were you most afraid of?15. Although I hadn't planned it this way, I discovered that a patriotic tone ran through the talks I gave that afternoon. I told thestudents how my faith in America had been renewed. I told them how proud I was to live in a country where people were still willing to help. I told them that the question I had had in mind when I planned this journey was now clearly answered. In spite of everything, you can still depend on the kindness of strangers.

Leonardo da Vinci (莱奥纳多·达多奇) was a famous artist who was born in Italy. He was also a great inventor. Many of his inventions have become important in modern life. Besides, Leonardo spent days thinking about how to save time. He developed ideas for something like cutting machines.Leonard was a strange man. He never ate meat. That was very unusual in those times (时代). He never published (发表) scientific discoveries. He usually used mirror writing, which looks like usual writing in a mirror, starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left side.Only a few of his paintings are left today. Many paintings were not finished because he thought they were not perfect.Leonardo was talented and creative.
HospitalityAn American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you’re not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That’s what hospitality is all about: making people feel at home when they’re not.The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm. Giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety in some cultures-it’s expected. But in American culture, a guest is not obligated to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their host. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers, candy or-if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice.American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, ”Can I bring anything? ”Unless it’s a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, ”No, just yourself. ”For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable, casual clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inform your hosts of the delay. During the dinner conversation, it’s customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meat. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food! When you’ve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you’re the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it’s probably time to head for the door. You don’t want to wear out your welcome. And above all, don’t go snooping around the house. It’s more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour. But except for house-warmings, guests often don’t get past the living room.Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here’s a good rule of thumb for house guests: Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, ”The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest. ”Even relatives don;t usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may eveninvite you back! Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people. Folks in the southern United States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, ”southern hospitality”has become legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms. So don’t be surprised to find the welcome mat out for you. Just don’t forget to wipe your feet.。
Unit 1-4 ABC
我买下了第一卷---- 从Aardvark(土豚)到Asteroid(海星)---- 然后开始了在知识世界中的冒险历程。
Stockholm
StockholmSorrounded by forests and water, Stockholm has the feel of of a small town. The royal capital of Sweden is actually a collection of islands linked by bridges. To the east, the Baltic Sea bustles with ferries and ships. To the west, Lake Malaren provides plenty of space for water sports and sailing. Stockholm’s residents seem to be more a part of a small community than a sophisticated European city. But they are intensely proud of their city.Stockholmers have good reason to be proud. Their city’s blue waters are so unpolluted that swimming and fishing are possible in the city center. Fishermen catch trout and salmon near the Royal Palace. Swimmers can take a dip within view of the Old Town. This experience is a small miracle that few cities can offer.Since water defines Stockholm in so many ways, no visitor should miss a tour by boat. Tour boats pass by many of Stockholm’s beautiful bridges, palaces and churches. One of the most famous tours is named”Under the Bridges of Stockholm. ”The typical boat tour includes the Old Town, or Gamla Stan. Situated on an island, this old city center still looks like a medieval city. The 608-room Royal Palace houses the Royal Armory and the Royal Treasury. The Treasury includes underground rooms. where the Crown Jewel are on display. In the State Apartments, the WritingRoom of King Oskar II has remained untouched since his death in 1907. The nearby Stockholm Cathedral displays ancient wooden carvings. The 700-year-old Riddarholm Church is the traditional burial place for Swedish kings. Besides historical attractions, Gamla Stan also offer chic shops and world-class restaurants. After leaving the Old Town, the boat tour also goes By City Hall on Lake Malaren. The buliding’s large square tower rises from the corner facing the water’s edge. Here the king and queen of Sweden look on each year as the Nobel Prize winners receive their awards. The elegant interior includes the famous Blue Room, where the Nobel banquet takes place. On the city’s Baltic side, the tour takes visitors past the Skansen Museum. Skansen is an outdoor”Sweden in miniature. ”The 80-acre park has sections representing the differnet regions of the country. The visitor can wander from Lapland in the north to Skane in the south. A stroll through the park also takes the visitor through five centuries of Swedish history. Resident craftsmen demonstrate some traditional trades:glass blowing, pottery making and printing, An animal park provides a close-up look at wolves, reindeer and elk, as well as typical farm animals. Also o the Baltic side of the city, the Wasa Museum, the home of the flagship Wasa, stands near the water’s edge. Once the pride ofthe Swedish navy, the ship sank on its maiden voyage. Now restored, it is a perfect example of a 17th-century seagoing vessel. The thousands of everyday objects recovered with the ship give a fascinating picture of daily life in Sweden 300 years ago. After a boat tour of the city, the next step should be a trip to some of the 24, 000 island in the beautiful Stockholm archipelago. Some are just rocks;others are green with forests. Many have small villages and country homes. Everyone is welcome to fish, swim and camp. As the “Venice of the North, ”Stockholm takes w ater seriously. Every August, the city goes all out for the Stockholm Water Festival. The festival sports events and other activities go on 24 hours a day;swimming championships, marathons, music, art and dancing. I the evenings, fireworks light up the sky. The King awards the Stockholm Water Prize for the most outstanding contribution to water conservation. By preserving its precious natural resource. Leonardo Da Vinci
The Renaissance period of Western history stretched from about A.
D. 1300-1600. It was a time of new discoveries, new experiments and new ideas. People began to study ancient art, literature and philosophy from Greek and Roman civilization. Artists invented new techniques to make their works more beautiful and lifelike. Writers and musicians no longer centered their compositions only on religious subjects. Like the Greeks and Romans, they began to make man the center of their work. Leonardo da Vinci is an outstanding example of the “Renaissance man, ”a man who combined intellect and creativity in startling new ways.
Leonardo was born on an estate near Vinci, Italy, in 1452. As a very young boy, he showed interest in living things. His drawings of plants and animals amazed his elders. When he was about 17, he met the famous Italian painter, Verrocchio. Leonardo was excited with the hope of studying with a great master. Verrocchio quickly saw the boy’s talent and took him into his art studio in Florence. Leonardo’s formal studies began as he learned basic techniques of painting. Soon he was working on paintings with his master, a common practice of the day. His diligent studies and hard work earned him the respect of both young and old artists. But Leonardo was much more than a painter . He was an inventor, an architect, , an
engineer, a philosopher and a scientist. He never attended university or earned an academic degree. But his nature intellect and curiosity about life drove him to examine everything around him. He observed and drew everything he saw. He believed sight to be the most important of the five senses. Leonardo filled more than 40 notebooks with observations of all kinds. When something interested him, he would make quick sketches on scraps of paper. Later he organized them by theme and recorded them in his notebooks. Leonardo tried to be as exact as possible in his observations. He combined sketches and text to communicate what he saw. When he wrote in his notebooks, he used mirror writing. Because he was left-handed, writing backward was easier for Leonardo.
The drawings in his notebooks show that he had ideas way ahead of his time. He sketched a flying machine, a helicopter and other mechanical devices. He also completed detailed drawings of the human body, both inside and out. His studies of human anatomy helped Leonardo people his paintings with very lifelike figures. Leonardo’s two most well-known paintings, the mysterious Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, a religious masterpiece, are some of the greatest paintings of all time. They have been studied and copied for centuries. The Mona Lisa’s famous smile fascinates the world. For centuries scholars have tried to guess why she smiles. The Last
Supper shows Jesus and each of his disciples with very human expressions. Instead of just appearing serene, they look like real people. This was a new way to paint religious subjects. Leonardo never married, but was a man with loyal disciples and frineds. He lived and worked in Florence, Milan and France. Leonardo’s gentle spirit, combined with his brilliant mind, made him a man of unusual qualities. Perhaps this is a part of the reason why this “Renaissance m an”has captivated admireers for nearly 600 years.。
